1. Why did Jumman’s aunt threaten to call the panchayat?
Jumman’s aunt owned some property that Jumman got transferred to his name under the promise of
taking good care of her. Once the property was transferred Jumman changed his behavior towards his
aunt. He was rude to her, did not give her enough food or clothing. He made her feel indebted to him
by taunting her. His wife too taunted her.
At last Khalajan asked him for a monthly allowance in return for her land so that she could live
separately. But Jumman refused. Left with no alternative she threatened to call a panchayat.
2. “Is your friendship more valuable than your honesty?” What did Jumman’s aunt mean by this?
When Khalajan asked Alagu to intervene to settle the matter with Jumman, Alagu refused citing the
reason of his friendship with Jumman. He said that he could not destroy their friendship. This is
when Khalajan appealed to his conscience saying, “Is your friendship more valuable than your
honesty?” She wanted him to see reason and settle the matter in an unbiased manner. She trusted
him to do so as a panch.
3. How did Jumman defend his case before the panchayat?
Khalajan put her case before the panchayat. She stated that Jumman Sheikh had transferred the
entire property to him under the condition that he was to take care of her. But Jumman was not
keeping his promise. She appealed to the panchayat to sort out the matter.
Jumman on the other hand told the panchayat that he had agreed to take care of Khalajan. He said
that the women of the household frequently quarreled. He also said that the property did not earn
him enough profit to pay for Khalajan’s upkeep. So he could not pay her the monthly allowance she
was asking.
5. How were Alagu and Samjhu different?
Alagu was kind and gentle towards the bullock. He fed it a good diet and gave it plenty of rest. It
received proper grooming at Alagu’s place. At Samjhu’s place the bullock was made to work hard. He
was made to pull double the load we was used to at Alagu’s. It was over worked and exhausted. One
day it collapsed and died. Samjhu was money minded and cursed the bullock for all his woes.
He left him dead by the highway. He falsely accused Alagu of selling him a half dead animal and
cheating him.
6. Why did Alagu’s heart sink when Jumman was appointed sarpanch?
Samjhu accused Alagu of selling him a half-dead bullock and refused to pay him. They decided to go
to the village panchayat to resolve the matter. Samjhu appointed Jumman as his sarpanch. Since
Alagu had resolved Jumman’s matter in Khalajan’s favour he was sure that Jumman would take his
revenge and not give him justice. Hence his heart sank upon hearing Jumman was appointed as
sarpanch.
