Training on Garbage Management Plan
Garbage management plan has been written in accordance with MEPC/Circ.317 – Guidelines for the Development of Garbage
Management Plan.
Garbage is segregated / stored in bins made of non-combustible materials with colour codes as below and properly stencilled
for their type
1) Plastics Orange
2) Operational Waste (Oily rags etc) Black with red band
3) Food waste Green
4) Paper / Metal / Glass Red
5) Medical waste White
6) Expired Medicines White
7) Incinerator ash Grey
8) Floating Dunnage, Lining &
Packing Materials Black
9) Hazardous wastes Blue
10) E-waste Light blue
11) Cargo residue Non-HME/ HME Black with green band
The Chief Officer is the Officer In-charge for garbage management, responsible for overseeing the collection of garbage from
all locations on board and subsequent storage until landed ashore or disposed of according to MARPOL Annex V.
Plastic Garbage
As a company policy, plastic garbage will only be landed ashore and there will be no incineration of plastic on board.
Disposal at sea is prohibited.
Operation Waste (Oily rags etc..)
Oily waste is collected from the places and incinerated– all ashes resulting from such burning are stored until they can be
landed ashore.
The Bosun is responsible for collection of oily waste within the deck department.
The Second Engineer is responsible for collection of oily waste within the engine department.
Food waste
As per MARPOL regulation Annexe V food waste can only be disposed outside special area when the vessel is more than 12
nautical mile from nearest land. Disposal of food waste in special area is allowed when it is passes through communiter and
vessel is en route, more than 12 nautical mile from nearest land
Food waste is collected until it can be either landed ashore or disposed of into the sea in accordance with MARPOL
regulations.
The Cook is responsible for collection of all food waste on board the ship.
The Cook is responsible for the disposal at sea of food waste subject always to confirmation by the Chief Officer that such
disposal is in accordance with MARPOL Annex V.
Galley waste oil
Container for collecting galley waste oil is located in the galley.
Waste oil is collected in the galley by the cook and all the oil collected during the month is kept for shore disposal.
The Cook is responsible for collection of the waste oil .
Other Garbage (Paper, Glass, Metal etc.)
Other garbage is collected and stored until it can be landed ashore in accordance with MARPOL regulations. Disposal at sea is
prohibited.
The Bosun is responsible for collection of other garbage within the deck department.
The Second Engineer is responsible for collection of other garbage within the engine department.
The Cook is responsible for collection of all food waste on board the ship.
Other garbage is moved from collection points to storage location in plastic garbage bags tied at the neck.
Special Wastes(Harardous waste)
Special/hazardous wastes is stored in a separate blue coloured container (white coloured container for expired medicines and
medical wastes) with the type stencilled/labelled on the containers: Expired pyrotechnics, expired medicines, medical waste,
expired batteries, fused fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, waste electronic parts like PCBs and transistors, used
chemicals/paints /degreasers/solvents etc, materials collected from leaking DG containers. All above items are landed ashore
except degreasers/solvents which may be transferred to the sludge tank.
Special wastes are collected in the containers located at places until it can be landed ashore or disposed of into the sludge tank
All Ship Staffs are individually responsible to ensure that Special Wastes are only collected in the dedicated bins at the above
mentioned locations. The Chief Officer is responsible for monitoring and ensuring that this is being followed.
E-Waste
Means ‘E-waste’ generated on board (e.g. electronic cards, gadgets, instruments, equipment, computers, printer
cartridges, etc.)
2nd Officer is responsible for collecting and delivery of ‘E wastes’ to Reception facilities.
Disposal of Garbage
Disposal into The Sea
Disposal of all kind of waste is prohibited except food waste that too 12 nautical mile from nearest land when outside special
area. In special area food waste can only be disposed when it is passed through communiter and vessel is en route 12 nautical
miles from nearest land. No disposal into the sea shall take place without authorization from the Chief Officer or the Duty
Navigating Officer and all such disposal shall be recorded in the Garbage record Book.
Comminuted or ground garbage must be able to pass through a screen with mesh size no larger than 25mm.
Full entries must be made in the Garbage Record Book for all garbage disposed of into the sea.
Landing Garbage Ashore
Garbage shall only be landed to authorised agents and shall be signed for by issue of a receipt stating the quantity and type of
garbage landed together with date, place and name of receiving company. All quantities should only be mentioned in cubic
metres and not as Kgs, Pcs or Nos etc. Each type of garbage should be mentioned individually on the receipt by the ship staff
e.g. expired medicines, fused tubes and lamps, expired batteries etc and should not be mentioned combined together as
‘others’. Empty paint drums should only be landed ashore and not disposed of into the sea.
Full entries must be made in the Garbage record Book for all garbage landed ashore.
