16. Let g( x) = − x 2 + kx + 4 − k , where k is a negative constant.


(a) Using the method of completing the square, express, in terms of k, the coordinates of
the vertex of the graph of y = g( x) . (2 marks)
(b) On the same rectangular coordinate system, the straight line y = x + 12 intersects the
graph of y = g( x) at two points A and B. It is given that the horizontal distance
between A and B is 9.
(i) Find the value of k.
(ii) Hence, find the coordinates of the vertex of the graph of y = 3g(− x) . (4 marks)

faces of the pyramid is the triangle WXZ described in (a).

It is given that the angle between the triangles WXZ and XYZ is 50°. Does the angle
between WY and the triangle WXZ exceed 35°? Explain your answer.

(b) Let M and N be the mid-points of PQ and PR respectively. MC is produced to meet
ON at the point H. Denote the in-centre of MNO by I. It is given that I lies on the
straight line 2 x − 3 y = 0 and the x-coordinate of I is p + 2 .
(i) Write down the equation of OM.
(ii) Is MH perpendicular to ON? Explain your answer.
(iii) By considering tan MOH and tan ION , find the value of p and the
coordinates of I.
(iv) Find the ratio of the circumference of the circumcircle of PQR to the
