INTRODUCTION
All real world thermodynamic processes are irreversible hence are bound to struggle for
“efficiency”. A physical quantity termed “entropy” defined in the second law of thermodynamics
is a pertinent measure of irreversibility. Entropy generation analysis (EGA) is instrumental in
designing thermal system which confront thermodynamic imperfection due to inherent
irrevesibilties. EGA has recently been acknowledged as a fascinating cost effective strategy for
optimal thermal system engineering owing to natural want of lesser energy losses. Thermal
system engineering hosts numerous convective flow configurations and EGA helps in
identifying the parameters responsible for the entropy generation. The flow configurations
owing to ample technological application such as solid matrix, heat exchangers, thermal
insulation, electronic components cooling etc must be treated for inherent thermodynamic
irreversibility in order to devise optimal system. The entropy optimization help practicing
engineers to design thermal systems with lesser energy losses and consequently maximum
possible energy available for use. The information through EGA is a basis for entropy
generation minimization (EGM). The interest in the field stems from the fact that fluid flow and
/or associated heat transfer are integral parts of countless industrial and technological
configurations. There are many causes to entropy production in a fluid flow such as heat transfer,
fluid friction, imposed magnetic field, radiative heat transfer, etc. Hence it is a natural choice to
examine such systems for second law of thermodynamics (entropy generation) also.
Last decade has witnessed a great surge of research activity in entropy generation
aspects in convective flow systems. The investigations have been carried out theoretically in
idealized flow configurations having technological implications. In fact, in order to find a
compromise between hydrodynamic and thermal performance, a second law analysis is a
pertinent tool.
Bejan 1979, 1982, 1996 in his pioneer works, has shown that in convective heat
transfer processes the parameters which are decisive in entropy generation can be identified and
“played with” to optimize the plan for lesser entropy generation. Acknowledging the importance
of entropy optimization many authors have reported pertinent relevant studies in diverse
convective flow systems. In view of application of entropy analysis in variety of engineering
fields like heat exchangers, cooling of nuclear reactors, energy storage systems, cooling of
electronic devises, pumps, turbine, and pipe networks, etc. it has recently become a hot topic of
study. It has been studied for variety of fluids in various geometries like deforming surfaces,
channels, tubes and ducts [Bajan (1979) , Cheng et al. (1994) , Chauhan and Vyas (1995) , Abu-

PROPOSED PLAN OF WORK
The proposed research aims to simulate existing /or proposed flow configurations having
industrial applications. These configurations may exist as a single unit or a component of larger
configuration. The core objective is to investigate existing systems for future simulations not
explored yet or to devise a new one from second law of thermodynamics point of view. In the
proposed work, configurations would be investigated theoretically. Problems such as flow in
ducts flow due to deforming heated surfaces, flow in rotating thermal systems, flow
past/adjacent to walls to name a few and allied transport processes would be treated for variety
of fluids and variety of boundary conditions. These may include variable fluid properties fluids,
nano fluids, micropolar fluids etc subjected to constraints as per requirement. The configurations
cited above and others found to be of interest during the course of study would be treated as per
want of the industrial and technological applications.
It is expected that the proposed work would constitute a formidable basis of knowledge
for devising pertinent systems and/ or understanding large scale analogous real world systems.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The configurations under study would be mathematically modeled to describe velocity
and temperature fields. These models would be treated analytically and/or numerically by
employing solution strategies as per requirement and suitability. After having determined
velocity and temperature fields, the entropy generation would be computed. The models would
be simulated for pertinent parameters entering into the problems and the findings would be
portrayed graphically and/ or in tabular form. There are some worthy texts on analytical or
numerical techniques [Batchelor (1969) , Nayfeh (1973) , Fletcher, (1976),Jain, (1979); Thomas,

Fauset, (2009)]. Computational softwares like MATLAB, MATHEMATICA, FLOW SOLVER ,
FLUENT etc will be used as per requirement.
