Winding Resistance in AC Machines Experiment

The document outlines an experiment to measure the winding resistance of the stator and rotor of an AC alternator. It details the components required, the procedure for measuring resistance, and the calculations needed to determine average resistance values at room temperature and at a conventional temperature of 75°C. Typical results for the stator and field resistance are provided as 0.3 Ω and 0.433 Ω, respectively.

Experiment 2

WINDING RESISTANCE
Objective

 Measure the resistance of the stator and rotor windings of the alternator

Components:

 1 AC machine stator with ring rotor and connected brushes

 1 DL 10016 - Supply module

 1 DL 10060 - Measurement module

Procedure

 Assemble the stator of the alternating current machine completed with ring rotor and
brushes. Follow the circuit shown in the previous electrical diagram 1(armature
resistance).
 Set the dc power supply for a direct voltage 0-8V.
 Set on the measurement module DL 10060 the voltmeter and ammeter for direct
current measurements and observe the polarity (+ at red terminal).
 Activate the supply module and supply the armature circuit with the current values
shown in the table and for each one of them measure the voltage at the stator terminal,
by carrying out in sequence the measurements between the terminal pairs.
 After having recorded the room temperature, write the measured values in the table.

Since the stator is star connected the resistance of every armature phase at the room
temperature ta is equal to:

1
R s= Rav =.. .. .(Ω)

Refer therefore the value of the phase resistance at the conventional temperature of 75 ̊C:

309.5
R s75=R s =.. . ..(Ω)
234.5+ta

Typical Results

R s75=0.3 Ω

Procedure

 Follow the circuit shown in the previous electrical diagram 29.2(Field Resistance).
Set the supply module DL 10016 for a variable direct voltage 0 ÷ 46V. 10A, (selector
“a or b” to position “b”), Set control knob to 0% and (selector DC “on or off” to
position “on”).
 After having recorded the room temperature, write the measured values in the table.

and write the values in the table.

Determine therefore the arithmetical mean of the field resistance at the room temperature

and set this value to the conventional temperature of 75 ̊C again:

Typical results

R E 75=0.433 Ω
