1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Problem Statement

Design and analysis of R.C.C and STEEL structure frame with the data
related to Karnataka location. This analysis includes seismic analysis (static
analysis).

1.2 Plan and elevation

The building is a pump house made of R.C.C and STEEL it has a monorail beam at the
center

Figure 1 Plan and Elevation in AutoCad

DESIGN OF PUMP HOUSE (R.C.C AND STEEL) STRUCTURE BY USING STAAD PRO SOFTWARE.

1.3 Description of structure

- The Pump house is ground floor structure of Structural beam framing supported on
RCC pedestal.
- Steel frame designed as moment frame i.e. sway frame in one direction and brace bay
i.e. non sway in another direction. The moment frame connecting column flange to
beam as full welded connection and another direction provided with shear connection
followed by vertical bracing.
- Support condition is considered as pin connection achieved by providing anchor bolts
within flanges.

Figure 2 Plan of R.C.C pedestal in AutoCad

- The lower RCC part considered as a rigid frame with plinth and pedestal supported by
footing.

Figure 4 Begin building your model

2.2 Modelling procedure

Figure 5 STAAD modelling interface

This will start with grid view. As we have to design in space model we have design it in 3 axis
such as X,Y,Z. We have to select one node as a reference and start creating the nodes as per the
drawing. And then we have to join the nodes by using add beam cursor. For example we can see
the below figure.

4
DESIGN OF PUMP HOUSE (R.C.C AND STEEL) STRUCTURE BY USING STAAD PRO SOFTWARE.

We have created a reference node at 0 X m, 0 Y m, 0 Z m.

Figure 6 Creating a reference node

After this we have create other nodes for example create node for height 2m so we have
created the node by Ctrl+C+V. we get the node interface to put the distance then we
have to put 2m for height in y axis we have see the orientation such (+,-) as per the axis
refer the figure shown below.

(a) (b)
Figure 7 Creating new node with reference node
5
DESIGN OF PUMP HOUSE (R.C.C AND STEEL) STRUCTURE BY USING STAAD PRO SOFTWARE.

Then we have created new nodes along X and Y axis. After that we have to use beam
cursor to join the nodes we have to maintain the orientation of beam so we should join
the beam in clockwise direction or anti-clockwise direction, if we use clockwise then we
have to join all the beams in clockwise direction only for example see the below figure.

Figure 8 Joining of nodes and creating beams and column by using beam cursor.

Figure 9 shows the orientation of beam

The above figure shows the orientation of beam green colour shows starting and blue
shows ending of beam.

After joining all nodes we have to give support to the column the below figure show the
interface support we have to choose whether the support is fixed, hinged, etc.

Figure 10 shows the support interface in STAAD.

7

Figure 11 Modelling in STAAD

The above figure shows the modelling after this we have to give property of material so the
same should be carry throughout till that position which we want. so this is R.C.C and steel
structure we have given the property of concrete and we have to provide a steel members
from 4.325 m level so we have given property of steel, so have to go the property page and
select the beam or column and give the shape and size as given below.

2.2.1 Design Parameters-

Code defined as IS800 LSD for steel design with beam design parameters.

Beam boundary conditions are defined in specifications, for shear and truss connection members released for
moments in both the ends as shown in below snap.

Figure 13 release member at end.

Figure 14 release member at start.

9
DESIGN OF PUMP HOUSE (R.C.C AND STEEL) STRUCTURE BY USING STAAD PRO SOFTWARE.

10
Figure 15 release members in STAAD interface.

To design the member length are defined in parameter section. The effective length for bending is based on
support distance i.e. bending about major axis is Lz and lateral restrain is about minor axis is Ly.
The top most floor beams are supporting deck slab which is connected by shear connector so flange is restrained
filly then we considered Ly as 1m.
Column effective length Lz for moment is applied for support pin and other end as fixed condition.
Since node is not created the bracing Lz or Ly not required, considering effective length within gusset plates the
length factor is applied as Kz & Kx for both the directions.

2.3 Materials
The following materials have been used for construction:
(a) Reinforced Concrete & P.C.C. :
Grade for Reinforced concrete shall be minimum M25. As per structural
design requirement Grade of P.C.C shall be M10 below footing, plinth beam
etc. The cement quality shall not be lower than grade 43.
(b) Reinforcing Steel :
High yield strength deformed bars (HYSD) conforming to IS1786- 2008 used
as main steel in the construction. (Reinforcement Fe 415 or Fe 500).

(c) Brick (230mm thick):External Brick shall be hard, well-burnt, uniform in size,
shape and Color homogeneous in texture. Confirming to IS 1077.

(d) Structural Steel (IS 2062 Grade A)

Young's Modulus of Elasticity: Es = 200 kN/ mm2
Yield stress Fy = 250N/mm2
Ultimate Tensile strength Fu= 410N/mm2

2.4 Climatic conditions :

 Annual average rainfall - 2000 mm

 Monsoon duration - June to Sept.
 Temperature - Varies between 22 deg. centigrade
to 45 deg centigrade.

15
DESIGN OF PUMP HOUSE (R.C.C AND STEEL) STRUCTURE BY USING STAAD PRO SOFTWARE.

2.5 Temperature effects:

Since dimensions of the building are less than 45 m, the temperature effect need not be
considered & hence not required.

2.6 Expansion joints:

Since the length /width of the structure is less than 45m as per IS456 no expansion joint is
required & hence not provided. (IS 456 clauses 27.0).

2.7 Design standard:-

Unless noted otherwise, the designs are based on different categories are according to
the relevant latest Indian standards codes.
Structure is designed in LIMIT STATE DESIGN METHOD.

2.8 Structural design:-

Followings are the design consideration and assumptions:
2.8.1 Soil conditions:-
We are taking open foundation & Assumed Soil Bearing
Capacity of 20 t/m2 at depth of 4.3mtr.

2.8.2 Loading (As per IS 875:1987)

2.8.2.1 Dead load (here in after referred as DL):

Dead load shall mean the total weight of structures and or foundations, and all
materials permanently attached there to or supported thereby. The unit weight of
material shall confirm to IS 875- Part-I
The analysis software depending upon the cross-sectional area and density of each
member as follows automatically calculates the self-weight of structure.

Density of R.C.C Members = 2.5 t/m3

Density of Steel Members = 7.8 t/m3

Dead load of a member = density x depth x width.

16
DESIGN OF PUMP HOUSE (R.C.C AND STEEL) STRUCTURE BY USING STAAD PRO SOFTWARE.

Self weight :- It refers to the self weight of any entity, such as a member (beam, brace, or column), or a
plate, or a solid. When the self weight command is used as a Load Item, it is an instruction to
STAAD.Pro to automatically consider the force created by the self-weight of the listed members. The
below figure shows the self weight acting on the whole structure.

Figure 20 shows the self weight of the structure applied in -y axis

Brick load :- This load is applied as a udl, based on height of wall it is multiplied with density and
thickness of wall. The bricks used are red clay brunt bricks.

Example of a member as shown below

Brick load = density x thickness x height = 20x0.23x4.5 = 20.7 kN/m

17
DESIGN OF PUMP HOUSE (R.C.C AND STEEL) STRUCTURE BY USING STAAD PRO SOFTWARE.

Figure 21 shows udl of brick load on the member.

Floor load:- This load is given as a floor load, for this load we have to define X and Z co- ordinates, for
defining the area of panel / floor .

Floor load = slab thickness x density + floor finish

= 0.125 x 25 + 3 = 6.125 kN/m2

Figure 22 shows the floor load in STAAD interface

18
DESIGN OF PUMP HOUSE (R.C.C AND STEEL) STRUCTURE BY USING STAAD PRO SOFTWARE.

Slab load :- slab load is considered same as floor load.

The other dead loads considered in design are as follows:

 Floor finish : 0.125 t / m2

 Dust load : 0.05 t / m2
 Monorail rail load 2 t + increase 10% in load : 2.2 t
due to impact load

2.8.2.2 Live Loads (here in after referred as LL):

Live loads shall mean the moving or movable external loads on structures,
foundations and buildings produced by people, tools, and furnishings of buildings etc.
which are not permanently fixed there to. These are applied as per IS 875 Part II.

Figure 23 shows the live on members

19
DESIGN OF PUMP HOUSE (R.C.C AND STEEL) STRUCTURE BY USING STAAD PRO SOFTWARE.

2.8.2.3 Earthquake loads (here in after referred to as EQ):

As per IS 1893-2002 the structure is considered to be located in Zone III of the seismic
map of India. For seismic analysis we have lump 100 % dead load and 50 % live load.

Analysis is made for following values –

Zone - : (III)

Importance factor I : 1.75

Response Reduction Factor R : 5.0 (Special Ordinary moment resisting

frames) * *
Soil Type : 2.0 (Medium soil)

Zone factor Z : 0.16 (moderate)

3.0 DETAIL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

3.1 Details of analysis:

Detailed space frame analysis will be carried out by using software
“STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN STAAD PRO 2007

STAAD or (STAAD.Pro) is a structural analysis and design software application originally

developed by Research Engineers International in 1997. In late 2005, Research Engineers

International was bought by Bentley Systems.

STAAD.Pro is one of the most widely used structural analysis and design software products
worldwide. It supports over 90 international steel, concrete, timber & aluminum design
codes.

It can make use of various forms of analysis from the traditional static analysis to more
recent analysis methods like p-delta analysis, geometric non-linear analysis, Pushover
analysis (Static-Non Linear Analysis) or a buckling analysis. It can also make use of various
forms of dynamic analysis methods from time history analysis to response spectrum analysis.
The response spectrum analysis feature is supported for both user defined spectra as well as a
number of international code specified spectra.

Additionally, STAAD.Pro is interoperable with applications such as RAM Connection,

AutoPIPE, SACS and many more engineering design and analysis applications to further
improve collaboration between the different disciplines involved in a project. STAAD can be
used for analysis and design of all types of structural projects from plants, buildings, and
bridges to towers, tunnels, metro stations, water/wastewater treatment plants and more.

3.2 Details of design:

Structural Steel members are designed by software however RCC like footing, pedestal and
plinth beams are designed manually or using spread sheets. The forces for RCC design are
