Lecture 14

The document outlines Lecture Fourteen of an Air Conditioning course at Al-Mustaqbal University, focusing on the heat balance and performance parameters for the standard vapor compression cycle. It includes equations related to the steady flow energy equation, mass flow rate calculations, and the concept of flash gas during throttling. Key parameters such as enthalpy and volumetric flow rate are also discussed.

Recall P-h diagram for the standard compression cycle.

By applying the steady flow energy equation (S.F.E.E) to each

process:
Q-W= Δu + Δz + Δh . (Δu=0, Δz=0)
Process (1-2): W=h2-h1 (kJ/kg), (Q=0, reversible adiabatic). …….(8).
Process (2-3): Qout=h2-h3 (kJ/kg) ………………. (9).
Process (3-4): Q=W=0 → h3=h4 ………………. (10).
Process (4-1): W=0, Qin = Qref. = h1-h4 (kJ/kg). ………… (11).

During throttling, a certain amount of liquid refrigerant is evaporated,
which reduce the temperature of the bulk of the liquid from condenser
temperature to evaporator temperature. This is known as (flash gas).

Where:
f= flash gas (kg).
hve= vapour enthalpy at evaporator temperature (Te).
hle= liquid enthalpy at evaporator temperature (Te).
hlc = liquid enthalpy at condenser temperature (Tc).
Volumetric flowrate always measured al compressor inlet.
