PEER RESPONSE “Explain the significance of pathophysiology understanding for your role as

a nurse.”

I agree with your opinion Christine Davac Prudenciado, about pathophysiology.

Many researchers explained pathophysiology in their own ways to describe how

pathophysiology is helpful in nursing career to understand the disease condition of the patient. I

will explain the question you have asked at the end of your original post that yes,

pathophysiology is helpful in everyday nursing profession.

According to RNC, pathophysiology can be defined as the scientific investigation of disease or

any abnormal process that alter the normal body function of an individual. It includes any

changes in patient’s day to day activity that patient is not able to do their everyday chores by

himself/herself. Apart from this, nurses should use their learning of pathophysiology whenever

they come in contact with a patient. Nurses should be enough competent in pathophysiology;

however, he/she must know how a disease affects a patient’s health and what specific treatment

or best quality care a nurse can give to the patient to improve their health condition or to

lengthen their patient lives. Furthermore, if a nurse is having the knowledge of pathophysiology,

it will help them to respond very quick to any changes they see in patient’s health status

(McHeals,2021).

In my three years of nursing practice, I worked as a registered nurse in pre and post operative

department. I dealt with many patients with different disease conditions and surgical procedures.

During my night postings, I have one patient with laparoscopic hernia repair. I noticed that

patient vital signs altered, mainly pulse rate. Since, I had studied and had knowledge of

pathophysiology of that disease, I realized that the patient showed the symptoms of infection,

fever or had pain on surgical site. Therefore, I checked the temperature of patient which was
normal and asked patient if he/she had pain by using numerical rating pain scale, then I

immediately inform the doctor. With the understanding of pathophysiology nurse can assess or

rule out the patient’s condition and provide top-notch care to the patient. With my experience is

life as a nurse I have realized that knowledge of pathophysiology plays a vital role in everyone’s

life.
