Introduction
Every year, thousands of talented candidates compete for a limited number of roles in the high-
frequency trading industry. Given the sheer volume of applicants, it’s estimated that a recruiter will
spend less than 10 seconds reviewing your resume before deciding whether to progress or discard
your application. In such a short amount of time, your resume needs to make a compelling case for
why you deserve a closer look.
At its core, your resume is your passport to the next stage of the application process—whether
that’s a psychometric test, phone screen, or first-round interview. It serves as a concise summary of
your relevant experiences, skills, interests, and achievements, tailored to the specific demands of
the quantitative trading industry. But it’s much more than just a ticket to the next round. When
crafted with intention, your resume can shape the narrative of your behavioural interviews, guiding
interviewers to focus on the strengths and experiences that you want to highlight.
What this guide will do
• Help you structure your resume to meet recruiter expectations.
• Highlight your strengths and relevant experiences.
• Provide insights into what recruiters seek in entry-level quant trading candidates.
• Enable strong candidates to stand out to recruiters.
• Provide a foundation for successful behavioural interviews.
What it won’t do
• Make you appear as a strong candidate if you don’t have the right qualifications.
• Guarantee you an interview or a job offer.
• Substitute thorough interview preparation and practice.

The Audience
Before crafting your resume, it’s crucial to understand its audience. Here, the audience includes any
company employee involved in advancing your application. Your resume may also be reviewed by
automated resume screening tools and background checking services.
Company Employees
The recruitment process in investment banking often involves multiple stages, with your resume
passing through various hands, such as:
• Campus Recruitment and HR Teams: These teams conduct the initial resume screening,
looking for candidates with the analytical skills, academic background, and interest in finance
required for the role. They will also use your resume to prepare for behavioural interview
questions.
• Quant Traders: As you progress, you may be interviewed by junior or senior traders,
researchers, or quantitative analysts. They will review your resume to identify areas to probe
during technical and fit interviews, such as your understanding of quantitative models,
programming skills and data analysi,.
Given this, your resume must:
• Enable recruiters to quickly identify your suitability to trading
• Highlight your strengths and the key areas you want to discuss during your interviews
Background Checking Services
If you receive an offer, the company will likely request a background check to verify your credentials.
This typically involves a third party reviewing your resume to confirm its contents are accurate.
This highlights the importance of honesty on your resume. There have been cases where students
have embellished or fabricated details, only to have their offers rescinded due to dishonesty. Don’t
let this happen to you! Ensure that your resume is a truthful representation of your credentials.
Automated Resume Screening Services
Some companies use automated resume screening systems to filter through the applicant pool. For
this reason, it is essential that your resume can be read by these systems. Avoid elaborate designs
that may confuse the software — remember, you’re applying for a role in trading, not graphic design!

What Employers Look For
When applying for a role, it’s crucial to understand what the employer values in their candidates.
Start by visiting the company’s website and review their values. Beyond this, trading firms often
seek the following qualities:
• High IQ
• Relevant technical background
• Intellectual curiosity
• Interest in trading
• Growth mindset
• Ability to handle pressure
• Resilience
• Leadership potential
• Teamwork skills
• Strong communication
• Confidence
• Appetite for risk
• Competitiveness
You don’t need to explicitly mention all of these traits in your resume. But by referencing relevant
experiences that demonstrate these traits, you can set yourself up for success in your behavioural
interviews.

Structure and Formatting
Before putting your resume together, it’s important to choose the right structure. We’ve already done
this for you.
GradIQ’s Resume Template
Along with this guide, you received a resume template designed to make your resume easy for hiring
teams to review. This template has been successfully used by students to secure trading roles at
firms including Jane Street and Optiver, as well as roles in other competitive industries including
Finance, Consulting, Technology, and Law.
In other words, it’s battle-tested and is proven to work.
What it includes:
The resume template comprises six sections:
• Basic Contact Information
• Education
• Skills
• Work Experience
• Extracurricular Activities
• Relevant Interests
What is doesn't include:
• Multiple Pages: Recruiters have limited time to review your resume. Keep it concise and stick to
one page.
• A Photo: You’re applying for a role in trading, not modelling. Photos can introduce bias. Let your
achievements and experience speak for themselves!
• Personal statement: Every part of your resume should add value. We believe personal
statements have a negligible impact on hiring outcomes and only add clutter. Get rid of them!
• Colours: Stick to black and white for a clean, professional look.
• References: The company will ask for a reference only when it’s required.

Building the Resume
Basic Information
This is the first and simplest section to complete. Include your full name, professional email address,
mobile number and LinkedIn (optional). Make sure your email address is appropriate for professional
correspondence, and remember to include the relevant country code with your mobile number if
applying overseas.
Education
The purpose of the Education section is to demonstrate to the recruiting team that you possess the
intellect and relevant technical background for a career in trading.
To assess your intellect, the reader will scan your resume for two key metrics: your university grade
(WAM or GPA) and your secondary school grade (ATAR or equivalent). To make their job easier, it’s
best to reference your grades using bold text. Given universities use different grading systems, it’s
best to quote your grade using a number followed by a qualifier e.g. 90 (High Distinction Average).
To apply to trading jobs, you must have at least a Distinction average. While many successful
candidates will have a High Distinction average and a 99+ ATAR, these aren’t strict requirements.
In addition to grades, recruiters will be interested in any academic achievements you’ve earned. This
is the place to include prizes, scholarships and subject rankings, particularly in fields related to
trading.
To demonstrate that you have the appropriate technical background, list your degree and majors.
Given the quantitatively demanding nature of trading careers, companies tend to hire candidates
with backgrounds in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM). If your studies don’t
align with these disciplines, you’ll need to showcase your quantitative aptitude through other
sections of your resume (such as Skills, Extra Curricular Activities or Relevant Interests)
Relevant Skills
The purpose of the Relevant Skills section is to highlight your technical skills that are relevant to
trading. Avoid listing non-technical skills such as “leadership", “resilience”, or "hard worker".
Instead, focus solely on the technical competencies that will make you a strong candidate for a
trading role.
For your convenience, here is a non-exhaustive list of relevant technical skills you can include in
your resume:
© GradIQ Pty Ltd 2024
• Programming Languages: Python, C, C#, C++, Java, JavaScript, MATLAB, R, etc.
• Revision Control Tools: Git, Bitbucket, etc.
• Open-Source Libraries: Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch
• Data Analysis: Time Series Analysis, Statistical Modelling, Monte Carlo Simulation
• Machine Learning & AI: Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Artificial Intelligence
• Quantitative Finance: Portfolio Optimisation, Backtesting, Financial Modelling
While this list may look intimidating, don’t be alarmed! Many trading candidates have received offers
with very limited programming experience and no prior ML, AI, or quantitative finance experience.
Whatever skills you choose to include, be prepared to provide concrete examples of how you’ve
successfully applied them in your previous experiences.
Work Experience
Your work experience is an excellent way to demonstrate important traits including teamwork,
leadership, communication, and technical skills. While extensive work experience is not always
required for entry-level roles, including the right examples can make an impact.
Key Points to Consider:
• Reverse Chronological Order: List your work experience in reverse chronological order, starting
with the most recent, relevant, position.
• Action Verbs: Describe your experience with strong action verbs e.g. “developed”, “analysed".
• Concise Descriptions: Keep each description concise, no more than three lines per role.
• Quantify Achievements: Whenever possible, use numbers to quantify your accomplishments.
• Industry Keywords: Include keywords such as “Python” or “quantitative analysis” to improve
your chances of passing automated resume screening systems.
• Keep it relevant: Include three to four relevant experiences. Avoid including examples that don't
add value to your application.
• Tailor it: Tailor the descriptions to emphasise aspects that are relevant to trading.
© GradIQ Pty Ltd 2024
Extracurricular Activities
Extracurricular activities are a great way to showcase important personality traits such as resilience,
competitiveness, teamwork, and leadership. Just like your work experience, these activities should
be selected to highlight qualities relevant to trading. Extracurricular activities you may wish to
mention include:
• University Society Involvement
• Academic Competitions: Hackathons, business case competitions, etc.
• Competitive (or Social) Sports
• Volunteering & Community Service
• Entrepreneurship: Founding or managing a startup.
• Anything related to working in a high performance environment
Relevant Interests
Finally, the Relevant Interests section provides you with the opportunity to showcase other aspects
of your life that align with trading. This section can help you stand out by highlighting interests that
demonstrate technical skills, strategic decision-making, risk management and the ability to adapt in
dynamic environments. Below is a non-exhaustive list of relevant interests you could include:
• Investing: Engaging in personal trading or managing an investment portfolio.
• Strategy Games: Chess, Go, or other games that involve strategic thinking.
• Video Games: Those involving strategic thinking, fast reaction times (such as FPS), or teamwork.
• Strategic Gambling: Poker, blackjack, sports betting, etc.
• Fantasy Sports
You may have other relevant interests that don’t fit neatly into these categories. If you want them to
be discussed during your interview, be sure to list them. If they’re not on your resume, your
interviewer may not ask the right questions for you to bring them up. Don’t leave it to chance!
Finally, while you can include some non-relevant interests (e.g., cooking, traveling), it’s not
necessary. If employers are interested in learning more about your personal hobbies, they’ll ask
during the interview.

Overall Analysis
The resume is well-constructed and closely follows the recommendations from the guide. Each
section is thoughtfully organised to maximise clarity, effectively showcasing the applicant's relevant
technical skills and experiences.
Considerations: There are a few areas where the resume could be strengthened. For example, it
provides limited reference to activities that demonstrate resilience and quick decision-making under
pressure. Consequently, the candidate should expect a recruiter to ask about these qualities and be
prepared to provide concrete examples of when they’ve demonstrated them.
Concluding Remarks
Crafting a strong resume is the first step toward landing a role in the competitive world of
quantitative trading. By following the structure and advice in this guide, you can present your
technical skills, academic achievements, and relevant experiences in a way that catches a recruiter’s
eye. Remember, your resume should be clear, concise, and tailored to highlight your strengths.
While no resume guarantees an interview, a well-crafted one will increase your chances of
progressing through the hiring process.
Best of luck as you take the next steps in your trading career!
