Homework 1 is due on February 14, 2025, and consists of exercises from Hartshorne’s 'Algebraic Geometry'. The tasks include proving properties of irreducible spaces and Noetharian rings. Specific exercises range from demonstrating the irreducibility of open subsets to showing that certain rings maintain the Noetharian property.

Homework 1

(Due on Friday, 14/02/2025)

All exercise numbers are from Hartshorne’s ‘Algebraic Geometry’.

(1) Chapter I, Section 1: Exercises 1.1–1.12.
(2) Show that any non-empty open subset of an irreducible space is irre-
ducible and dense.
(3) Let Y be an irreducible subset of a topological space X. Then show
that its closure Y in X is also irreducible.
(4) Show that continuous image of an irreducible space is irreducible.
(5) If X is a Noetharian topological space such that single point sets are
closed and dimension of X is 0, then show that X is a finite set.
(6) If A is a Noetharian ring, then show that the formal power series ring
A[[x1 , x2 , . . . , xn ]] in n-variables is also Noetharian. (Hint: Use the
hint provided in the class)
(7) Show that a ring A is Noetharian if and only if all of its prime ideals are
finitely generated. (Hint: Let Σ be the set of all non-finitely generated
ideals. Show that Σ has a maximal element which is a prime ideal.)
