LESSON PLAN

UNIT 9: PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT

Lesson 3: Reading

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Language knowledge and skills

- Reading for main ideas and specific information about the environmental
problems and its effects

2. Core competences

- Developing communication skills and creativity;

- Being collaborative and supportive in pair work and teamwork;

- Developing presentation skills.

3. Attitude

- Understanding more about the environmental problems and how to protect the
environment

- Developing a self-awareness about protecting the environment

II. TEACHING AIDS/RESOURCES

- Grade 10 textbook, Unit 9 – Reading

- Laptop

- TV

III. TEACHING PROCEDURE

1 Warm-up: Slap the board

Time: 04 minutes

a. Aim: To introduce the topic of the reading and get Ss involved in the lesson
b. Input:
The environmental topics: deforestation, hunting endangered animals, ice melting,
global warming, air pollution.
c. Outcome: Ss can get involved in the topic
d. Procedure:
Step 1: T writes down those words on the board

Step 2: T divides the class into 2 groups, and invites 4 members of each group

Step 3: Ss slap the words when hearing T call out the words

2. Activity 1: Work in pairs. Look at the pictures and answer the following
questions (p.103)

Time: 03 minutes

a. Aim: To introduce the topic of the reading and get Ss involved in the lesson
b. Input:

c. Outcome: Ss can gain an initial understanding of the topic


Answer keys:

1. Deforestation/cutting down forests


2. Air pollution
3. Global warming/ Ice melting
4. Hunting endangered animals
d. Procedure:
Step 1: T shows the pictures on the screen

Step 2: Have Ss work in pair to answer the question: “What environmental


problems do you see in the pictures?” in 1 minute

Step 3: T invites some Ss to give their answers

Step 4: T checks the answers as a class

3. Activity 2: Read the text and choose the best title for it. (p.103)

Time: 05 minutes

a. Aim: To help Ss to practice reading for the main ideas


b. Input:

Answer Keys: a
c. Outcome: Ss can identify the main ideas of the reading text
d. Procedure:
Step 1: T gives instruction

Step 2: T asks Ss read the text and choose the best title in 3 minutes
Step 3: T asks Ss to exchange the answers with their friends

Step 4: T checks the answers as a class

4. Activity 3: Read the text again and decide which paragraph contains the
following information (p.104)

Time: 10 minutes

a. Aim: To help Ss practice reading for specific information.


b. Input:

c. Outcome: Ss identify specific information in the text and complete the


exercise accurately.
Answer Keys:

d. Procedure:
Step 1: T gives instruction
Step 2: T checks Ss’ understanding of the task requirements
Step 3: T asks Ss to read through the statements once, identify and underline
the keywords
Step 4: T emphasizes the keywords again
Step 5: T asks Ss to work individually to read the text and complete the table
in 5 minutes
Step 6: T asks Ss to exchange their answers with friends.
Step 7: T calls some Ss to give their answers and explain
Step 8: T checks the answers and show the evidence

5. Activity 4: Complete the sentences with the information from the text. Use
no more than TWO words for each answer. (p.104)
Time: 05 minutes

a. Aim: To help Ss read for specific information


b. Input:

c. Outcome: Ss can identify the information specifically

Step 1: T gives instruction
Step 2: T checks Ss’ understanding of the task requirement
Step 3: T asks Ss to work in pairs to complete the sentences in 3 minutes

Step 5: T checks the answers
6. Activity 5: Work in group. Discuss the question. (p.104)
Time: 14 minutes

a. Aim: To help Ss use the ideas and language in the reading to talk about the
most serious problem in Viet Nam
b. Input: The question: “Which of the problems mentioned in the text do you
think is the most serious in Viet Nam?”
c. Outcome: Ss can use the ideas and language to express their opinions in a
clear and understandable way
d. Procedure:
Step 1: T gives instruction
Step 2: T checks Ss’ understanding of the task requirements
Step 3: T asks Ss to list the four environmental problems mentioned in the
reading text
Step 4: T asks Ss to work in group to discuss one problem which is
considered the most serious one in 8 minutes
Step 5: Have Ss present their work
Step 6: T gives constructive feedback.

7. Wrap-up

Time: 01 minutes

a. Aim: To review the lesson content and give homework.


b. Procedure:
Step 1: T reviews the main content of the lesson.
Step 2: T asks Ss to write a short paragraph about the most serious problem in
Viet Nam in their own opinions.
