Data Analysis Using Computer – Assignment - I

1. In a certain income tax system, the income earner is exempted from paying any
tax for the first 2,00,000/- rupees of his gross income. The income above
Rs.2,00,000/- upto Rs.5,00,000/- is taxed at a rate of 10% and any income over
and above 5,00,000/- upto 10,00,000/- is taxed at a rate of 20%. Further income
earned over and above 10,00,000/- is taxed at a higher rate of 30%. Formulate
appropriate logical function in excel to find the total tax due for various levels
of income given in the Tax.xls dataset.

2. Population data between 1950 and 2004 for all the States of U.S.A. is given in
file USAPop.xls. (Obtained from U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis). The
countries Election commission would like to restructure the constituencies if
there is a wide difference between population during 1950 and 2004. Use
appropriate test to see whether there is any significant difference in population
growth between the two time periods.

3. A sample of 400 male students is found to have a mean height of 67.47 inches.
Can it be reasonably regarded as a sample from a large population with mean
height of 67.39 inches and a standard deviation of 1.30 inches? Test at 5%
Level of significance.

4. A set of twelve students were given intensive coaching and five tests were
conducted in a month. The scores of test 1 and test 5 are given in below and
also in the file Testscores.xls. Use appropriate test to find out whether the
scores from test 1 to test 5 show any significant improvement? Use 1%, 5%
and 10% level of significance.

5. Use the file MEW12_1.xls and find the correlation between use of fertilizer and
yield. Draw a scatter diagram for the two and sketch a trend line for the same.

6. Bring out a correlation matrix using the file T10-13.txt of Gujarati Database
and interpret the same.

7. Load the file MEW12_10.xls from the data set of David whigam.

(a)Fit a Regression equation for the above data to find the influence of Bonus
payments by a company on production volume of the workers. (Write the Fitted
Regression in the same Excel Sheet).

(b)Interpret the fit of the model, Insert a trend line for the regression equation
and predict the increase or decrease in production if the bonus payments were
40,600 & 39,000, 25000, and 1000 respectively.

(c) Plot the regression line showing the actual and predicted production
8. Use the data given in Wages.xls. Test if there is a difference in wages between
black female workers and other category of workers. What is the direction and
magnitude of difference? Is the difference statistically significant?

9. From the data given below (Colour.xls), find out whether there is any
significant association between gender and colour preference. Test whether the
colour preference is same for both male and female at 1% & 5% level of
significance.
