Week 1 Reflection
As a third-year student in the BS Social Work program, I have already prepared myself for a
challenging journey. This year, we have only one minor subject, with the rest being major
courses. This means that these subjects serve as our primary training ground for our future
careers as social workers. When introduced to this subject, I initially expected a similar
intensity of workload and the same level of effort in terms of the quality of our proposed
plans, as we are being trained to conceptualize projects and programs for our chosen client
group. Since this is the third time Sir Joseph will be teaching us, I anticipated receiving the
same profound knowledge he has previously shared with our class, especially considering his
experience in the professional field. Therefore, I am confident that we are in capable hands
and that our understanding of the crucial steps in project and program development will be
thoroughly honed. While I look forward to experiencing the usual light, fun, and knowledge-
filled atmosphere that has become familiar to our block, I also expect constructive criticism
and in-depth analysis of both our insights and outputs. For we know that the success of what
we plan to execute or administer to our clients will depend on the integrity and foundation of
the program itself.
To sum up, our roles as social workers are crucial in maintaining social harmony and
functionality, especially for those in marginalized sectors who require more support than
others. We cannot simply offer projects or programs to individuals in need; they require
careful consideration and frameworks based on research to determine whether they will truly
alleviate or transform the current conditions of our service users.
If given the chance to develop a social welfare program, I plan to create one that addresses
the needs of fostered children with special needs. This is a rising concern that I would like to
know more about and eventually be in service to as research of UNICEF (2022), have shown
that 1.6 million Filipino children or 1 in 7 children are living with disabilities. One of the
reasons these precious children were orphaned or surrendered to foster care is that their birth
families or biological parents could not provide for their essential needs. Being deprived of
emotional, social, and institutional support hinders children with special needs from
maximizing their skills and potential, as proper guidance and support from the family are
missing. Therefore, one component of the program will focus on enrichment activities and
specialized education plans.
Overall, the agency will collaborate with schools that cater to individuals with special needs
to develop skills in communication, social relations, and extracurricular activities such as arts
and music to ensure continued development in the child’s life. Educational and training
resources are crucial for enhancing the development of children in this situation. Additionally,
foster parents and staff will receive training to provide the children with improved care and
management of their special needs, including emotional, behavioral, and social techniques.
