SIKKIM: FIRST-TIMER TIPS FOR TRAVELING INDIA’S NORTHEAST.
“Planning a trip to Sikkim? Thinking about the best things to
see and do during your trip to this little gem of North East
India? Here is an extensive travel guide that tells you about
Sikkim’s main tourist attractions, food and shopping.”
Sikkim
The valley of flowers
Sikkim is a small, landlocked Himalayan state in Northeast India. Home to Lepcha, Bhutia, and Nepalese
communities, the region is now receiving global attention thanks to being India’s first and only Organic
State, with a completely organic farming model. Today, travelers frequent Sikkim for its picture-worthy
high altitude lakes, farms, and traditional festivals such as Losoong , which celebrates the Sikkimese New
3
Year. It’s also a thriving outdoor destination with hiking trails through pinewood forests. If you are a
first-timer, it’s important to know what not to miss.
HOW TO GO TO SIKKIM?- (By Road)
Sikkim is well connected to Siliguri; a gateway of North-east India by the National Highway 31. It is a 4
hours (145 km) fine drive on the twisty roads that pass through the dense forest and carpeted hills.
Tourists often prefer to travel to Sikkim by road, enjoying the scenic beauty of the River Teesta on one
side and soaring peaks parked along the other side of the road. Apart from Siliguri, Sikkim can also be
easily reached from Darjeeling (126 km), Kolkata (700 km) Kalimpong (104 km) and Bagdogra (153
km). There are several regular SNT (Sikkim Nationalized Transport) buses available to travel to and fro
the capital city of Sikkim-Gangtok. They also run between the district headquarters and sub-divisions of
the state.
GANGTOK- THE CAPITAL OF SIKKIM-
Gangtok, the exotic capital city of Sikkim, is a Buddhist haven. In sync with the Zen philosophy that
divinity can only make its way through clear and clean surroundings, Gangtok is an epitome of neatness
and is one of the few such places in India. The stunning panoramic views of the snow-capped Mount
Kanchenjunga, only add to the Gangokian environs. Offering the best tourist places in Gangtok, this place
is also famous for its distinct cuisine, of which Momos and Kinema, are an excellent example. Gangtok is
a city of great food, atmospheric sceneries and beautiful Buddhist monasteries, which include Rumtek and
4
Enchey. It has great potential for sightseeing as well, including the Nathu La Pass and Tsomgo Lake.
TEA GARDENS IN SIKKIM-
The only tea garden in Sikkim- Temi Tea Garden
5
Nestled amidst the towering snow-capped mountains of South Sikkim lies a sprawling 440 acre-stretch of
land carpeted with emerald-hued tea bushes. Despite facing stiff competition from its adversaries in the
neighboring Darjeeling, Temi Tea Garden, the only tea producing region of Sikkim, has established itself
as one of the finest producers of tea in the world in multiple auction houses. Located in the southern part
of the state, the tea garden lies between Damthang and Temi Bazaar, near Namchi, the main town of
South Sikkim. You can hire a cab straight to Temi Tea Garden from Gangtok or take a shared taxi to
Namchi and hire a private cab to the tea garden.
