THOMAS HOBBES
BIOGRAPHY
● Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) was an English philosopher known for his political
ideas, especially in Leviathan (1651). Born in a time of political upheaval.
Hobbes' support for absolute monarchy and his materialist views were
controversial, especially during the English Civil War. Despite criticism, Hobbes
lived to 91, and his ideas still influence political theory today.
STATE OF NATURE
● A hypothetical condition where there is no government or laws. Hobbes describes
it as a state of chaos and war, where life is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and
short" due to the lack of security.
SOCIAL CONTRACT
● An agreement among individuals to form a society and establish a government to
escape the state of nature. People give up some of their freedoms in exchange for
security and order.
SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY
● The ultimate authority in society, created by the social contract. This ruler (a
monarch or government) has absolute power to maintain peace and prevent the
return to the state of nature.
OBLIGATION TO OBEY
● Once the social contract is formed, individuals have a moral obligation to obey
the sovereign authority, as it ensures their protection and well-being.
Disobedience could lead to a return to the chaos of the state of nature.
