Three-Phase Inverter using Sine Wave
Objective:
To simulate a three-phase inverter that generates square wave outputs, observe the voltage
and current waveforms across a three-phase R-L load, and study the input signals and
switching logic.
Simulation Software:
MATLAB/Simulink (Simscape Electrical)
Sampling Time:
1e-6 seconds (Discrete Simulation)
Circuit Description:
- A DC voltage source supplies the inverter.
- Six IGBT switches are configured in a three-phase full-bridge inverter topology.
- Switching signals (SAP, SAN, SBP, SBN, SCP, SCN) are generated by comparing sine waves
with a carrier (sawtooth) waveform.
- Each phase has an R-L load (R = 1 ohm, L = 1 mH).
System Schematic:
Input:
- Switching Signals: SAP, SAN, SBP, SBN, SCP, and SCN.
- Generated using sine wave references with phase shifts:
- Phase A: 0 rad
- Phase B: +120 degrees (2*pi/3 rad)
- Phase C: -120 degrees (-2*pi/3 rad)
- Repeating Sequence Blocks (triangular waveform) compared with sine references.
- Voltage Source: DC Source.
- Switching Frequency: Fundamental 50 Hz.
Switching Signal Generation:
Sine Wave Parameters:
Output:
- Phase Voltages (Van, Vbn, Vcn): Square wave output.
- Line Currents (Ia, Ib, Ic): Quasi-sinusoidal with high-frequency ripples.
- Load: Three-phase balanced R-L load.
- Load smooths the distorted voltage waveform, making current waveform more sinusoidal.

Load Details:
- Resistance (R): 1 ohm
- Inductance (L): 1 mH

Conclusion:
The three-phase inverter successfully generates square wave output voltages and produces
approximately sinusoidal currents through an R-L load. The simulation demonstrates the
working of a basic square wave inverter and highlights the importance of load filtering to
obtain cleaner current waveforms.
