CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

An underlying technology that allows software to operate and interact with

hardware and other software programs is called platform. It is any hardware or

software used to host an application or service. An application platform, for

example, consists of hardware, an operating system, and coordinating programs

that use the instruction set for a particular processor. In this case, a platform

creates a foundation that ensures object code executes successfully. Platforms like

digital platform, operate continuously and are accessible regardless of time zone or

geographic location. This boosts user engagement by enabling real-time

interactions and transactions.

Digital platforms are an omnipresent event that challenges people by

changing how we consume and provide digital products and services. Whereas

traditional firms create value within the boundaries of a company or a supply

chain, digital platforms utilize an ecosystem of autonomous agents to co-create

value. Gibson (2024) stated that digital platforms have revolutionized how buyers

and sellers connect. They have moved business interactions from traditional

settings like physical marketplaces and classified advertisements to online

environments, significantly increasing their reach and partnership opportunities.

Social media advertising is an offshoot of digital marketing where paid

advertisement campaigns are run on social media platforms to reach target

audiences. It is significantly impactful as it allows to deliver messages to their

ideal buyers throughout their purchase journey. Marketers and advertisers can

promote their brands and inspire sales through the social channels that users

frequently use. In the online world, it is getting increasingly complicated to get

messages noticed, as user attention is increasingly becoming a scarce resource.

According to Zalani (2024), “Social media marketing is a long game. You

need to post consistently, hop on trends, and have a lot of patience before you see

tangible results.” Social media advertising distinguishes itself from traditional

advertising with modern targeting capabilities. Traditional advertising adopts the

carpet-bombing approach, wherein brands deliver advertisement to the maximum

people possible, regardless of whether they are interested or not. Social media, on

the contrary, enables brands to connect with the ideal buyers based on their

geographic, demographic, psychographic, and behavioral characteristics.

In today's digital age, online marketing has transformed the way businesses

reach their target audience. One of the most popular forms of online marketing is

affiliate marketing, which involves promoting products or services of another

company. With the increasing popularity of e-commerce and online shopping,

affiliate marketing has become a profitable opportunity for individuals to earn

passive income. Because of the modern times of information and technology, new

business opportunities particularly in affiliate marketing are gradually opening up.

They can make money while they study as affiliate marketing advertisers, but

there are drawbacks as well, including difficulties and effects on their education,

outlook on business, and way of life.

Affiliate marketing has become a popular way for individuals and

businesses to earn money online as it presents a unique opportunity for students to

gain financial independence, develop valuable skills, and explore entrepreneurial

ventures. This strategy allows advertisers to promote products or services from

other companies and earn a commission for each sale made through their referral.

In recent years, this trend has gained traction among students, who are looking for

flexible ways to earn income while balancing their studies. As more students

explore affiliate marketing, it is important to understand how this opportunity

impacts their lives and education. In addition to that statement, affiliate marketing

empowers students by providing them with a flexible and accessible way to earn

extra income while pursuing their studies. This can alleviate financial burdens and

contribute to their overall well-being. Moreover, engaging in affiliate marketing

equips students with practical experience in financial management, budgeting, and

investment, skills that are essential for future financial success.

Beyond financial benefits, affiliate marketing fosters the development of

crucial digital skills, including digital marketing, social media management,

content creation, and online business strategy. These skills are highly sought after

in today's digital job market, opening doors to diverse career opportunities.

Furthermore, affiliate marketing encourages an entrepreneurial mindset, prompting

students to think creatively, identify market opportunities, and develop their own

marketing strategies. This can lead to the development of unique online businesses

and marketing campaigns, contributing to local economic growth and innovation.

Affiliate marketing can yield great rewards for the advertising company and

the affiliate marketer. The company benefits from low-cost advertising and the

creative marketing efforts of its affiliates, and the affiliate benefits by earning

additional income and incentives. The return on investment for affiliate marketing

is high as the company only pays on traffic converted to sales. The cost of

advertising, if any, is borne by the affiliate (Perez, 2024).

In recent years, many students have embraced affiliate marketing as a

means to supplement their financial resources. However, while the potential

benefits are clear such as the development of entrepreneurial skills, additional

income, and exposure to digital marketing, there are also challenges associated

with this practice. Time management, the risk of distraction from academic

responsibilities, and navigating the complexities of online business are issues that

students must confront. Assessing these challenges will enable people to explore

the impact of affiliate marketing on students, investigating both the positive

outcomes and potential drawbacks.

One of the biggest misconceptions about affiliate marketing is that it is a

quick and guaranteed way to make money. While there is the potential to make a

fantastic living from the approach, it is by no means easy. The process can be

difficult to navigate, and it takes time, effort, and dedication. Navigating through a

large pool to choose the right affiliates is a primary challenge in affiliate

marketing. This is because affiliates may not always align with the brand values,

potentially harming their reputation. Furthermore, the varying levels of expertise

amongst affiliates and inconsistent performance make the selection process even

It is important to examine many facets of affiliate marketing, including how

it affects students' academic obligations, entrepreneurial abilities, and financial

literacy. It is imperative to comprehend the consequences of this digital marketing

approach, as it not only emphasizes the advantages and difficulties encountered by

student advertisers, but also offers valuable perspectives on their flexibility in a

dynamic economic landscape. This will provide insight into how affiliate

marketing impacts Batangas City students' goals for their careers, time

management skills, and financial independence.

Understanding the effects of affiliate marketing on students in Batangas

City is important for a variety of stakeholders, including the students themselves,

and several businesses. By examining how this digital marketing model influences

student life, it will help affiliate marketing advertisers provide valuable insights

into the opportunities and challenges that affiliate marketing presents. This study

aims to inform better decision-making for students who wish to engage in online

business, as well as institutions that may offer support for entrepreneurial

multifaceted. Financially, it provides an alternative or supplementary income

However, the challenge lies in balancing academic responsibilities with the

significant results. Additionally, the competitive nature of the industry and the

need for a well-established online presence may pose difficulties for students

starting out. Despite these challenges, affiliate marketing presents a promising

opportunity for students in Batangas City to harness the power of digital platforms

for income and professional growth.

The study will contribute to the growing field of digital marketing, helping

stakeholders recognize the educational, financial, and social implications of

affiliate marketing for students in Batangas City. The effects of becoming an

affiliate marketing advertiser on Batangas City students will be investigated in this

study. This will examine the advantages, which include skill development and

financial independence, as well as the disadvantages, which include the possibility

of study distraction. The ultimate goal of this study is to offer insightful

information on how affiliate marketing affects students' lives in Batangas City.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to investigate the impact of being an affiliate marketing

advertiser to students in Batangas City.

It also seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of their:

1.1. age;

1.2. gender; and

1.3. platform?

2. What strategies do advertiser use to market the affiliate on the internet?

3. What challenges do affiliates experience in marketing products on the internet?

4. What are the benefits faced by the individuals in Batangas City when it comes

to adopting and implementing affiliate marketing advertisement?

5. What contents of a website may be presented to influence the future affiliate

marketing advertiser in Batangas City?

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study seeks to assess the impact of being an affiliate marketing

advertiser on students in Batangas City and explore the financial benefits on how

affiliate marketing contributes to their financial independence. Additionally, this

study will explore the reasons why students engage in affiliate marketing and how

it affects their career goals.

The data collection will be conducted to 70 randomly selected students in

senior high school to college levels in Batangas City.

However, this study will not include a detailed analysis of all types of

online marketing or the experiences of students outside Batangas City. It will also

not look into the long-term effects of affiliate marketing on students after they

finish school, as the focus is primarily on current students and their immediate

experiences. The study is limited to students residing in Batangas City, which may

not represent students involved in affiliate marketing from other regions.

Significance of the Study

The researchers believed that this study could benefit the affiliate marketing

advertisers, beneficiaries, affiliate marketing platform, local businesses, present

researchers, and future researchers.

To the affiliate marketing advertisers, they can tailor their marketing

strategies to attract students, offer more student-friendly platforms, and create

affiliate programs that align with the schedules and needs of young adults.

To the beneficiaries, by promoting more relevant and personalized

advertising, it will enable them to discover products or services that align with

their needs and preferences.

To the affiliate marketing platform, this study will help them to allow

individuals and businesses to promote the products and services of another

company in exchange for a commission on each sale.

To the local businesses, this research can show local businesses the

potential benefits of partnering with student affiliates. This collaboration can help

them reach targeted audiences and increase their sales.

To the present researchers, this study will be useful in designing targeted

marketing strategies and will be able to pinpoint specific challenges students may

face in affiliate marketing. With these insights, they can develop support systems

that was built on these experiences.

To the future researchers, this will serve as a guide in exploring new

trends in affiliate marketing and understand the impact of being an affiliate

marketing advertiser in today’s society.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter will present conceptual and research literature about the

impact of being an affiliate marketing advertiser to students. The information

given will be used to provide deeper understanding of the research that will enable

the researchers to conduct a better study.

Conceptual Literature

The following articles in this chapter are related to the study that will help

the researchers comprehend the impact of being an affiliate marketing advertiser,

and will broaden their knowledge with the help of the information mentioned.

Affiliate. The affiliate can be either an individual or a company that

markets the seller's product in an appealing way to potential consumers. In other

words, the affiliate promotes the product to persuade consumers that it is valuable

or beneficial to them and convince them to purchase the product. It is any person

who is a promoter of the company and connected with the company in any

capacity and provides management or advisory services for the company. As

mentioned by Kenton (2023), “An affiliated person is someone in a position to

influence the actions of a corporation. This includes directors, officers, and certain

shareholders. Depending on the context, an affiliated person might be referred to

simply as an "affiliate." Affiliated persons may also be called control persons or

insiders.”

Based on the researchers, an affiliate is an organization which is officially

connected with another larger organization or is a member of it. Affiliates perform

online marketing on behalf of a merchant, to drive conversions for the merchant's

website. For every click or conversion earned, the affiliate is paid by the seller. In

the corporate world, affiliated persons are those entities or people who control,

either directly or indirectly, another entity.

An affiliate earns a commission for marketing another person’s or

company’s products. The affiliate simply searches for a product they enjoy, then

promotes that product and earns a piece of the profit from each sale they make.

The sales are tracked through affiliate links from one website to another.

According to Rubin (2024), “An affiliate describes a company or a person with a

parent company that possesses 20% to 50% ownership of the affiliate. Owning an

affiliate can allow a company to extend its market share into parts of the world to

which it otherwise wouldn't have access.”

The researchers believed that when an affiliate is marketing an item from a

business, it brings attention to a company's products or services offered. They

promote products through online advertisements showing on different social

media platforms in order for the possible targeted customers to see the items they

are marketing. The affiliate handles content creation and distribution, and the

business pays a commission to the affiliate for every sale they drive. By including

unique affiliate links in their content, affiliates generate sales, earning a

commission for each successful transaction.

An affiliate marketing advertiser, in as few words as possible, are

publishers, content creators, and digital marketers earning commissions by

promoting other people’s products or services. They promote certain businesses

through an advertisement on their website and in return that business rewards the

affiliate with commission each time a visitor, customer generates sales. In

accordance with Prabhu et al. (2015), “Affiliate marketing core consists of 3

parties which are advertiser, publisher, and consumer. Advertiser can be any

company selling products. Publisher is the one who promotes advertiser’s products

or services through its website or blog. Consumer is the final and very important

part of this cycle who see the advertisement and then makes an action (click)

which takes him from publisher’s website to advertiser’s website and after making

a purchase it is called conversion”

According to the researchers, affiliates carry out performance-based

approach to online marketing whereby brands only pay when a sale occurs and is

traced back to the affiliate who made it happen. Affiliate marketing programs use

several social media platforms in Web 2.0 and are now one of the most used

channels for marketers and publishers online.

Media Platform. It is a business model that creates value by facilitating

exchanges between two or more interdependent groups, usually consumers and

producers. In order to make these exchanges happen, platforms harness and create

large, scalable networks of users and resources that can be accessed on demand.

Platforms create communities and markets with network effects that allow users to

interact and transact. Moazed (2024) stated that it is a holistic business model that

creates value by bringing together consumers and producers. Successful platforms

facilitate exchanges by reducing transaction costs and/or by enabling externalized

innovation and with the advent of connected technology, these ecosystems enable

platforms to scale in ways that traditional businesses cannot.

According to the researchers, a platform is an online digital service or

website that enables users to create, share, and interact with content and connect

with other users. It provides a virtual space for individuals, organizations, and

communities to communicate, collaborate, and engage with one another. It is

important to know that a platform is a business model, not just a piece of

technology. A lot of people make the mistake of conflating a platform with only a

mobile app or a website, but a platform is not just a piece of software.

A platform can be defined as an instrument that aims to maximize its profits

by providing programming and advertising. It is any organization that provides a

service for public users to disseminate speech, expression, information, or other

content that typically includes messages, videos, photographs, and sound files to

other users or the public. It can be financed purely through advertising or through

a combination of advertising and other sources. Social media platforms are

interactive digital channels that focus on the creation and sharing of thoughts,

ideas, and information through virtual networks. These platforms enable users to

take part in social networking by creating content, sharing their thoughts,

commenting on other user content, and reposting it. Content can be texts, images,

videos, and GIFs circulated in virtual communities or networks. Social media

platforms are widely used in communication services alongside marketing

strategies (Kanwal, 2024).

Moreover, based on the observations of the researchers, a media platform is

a service, site, or method that delivers media to an audience that may refer to a

technology, service, site, or method of delivering content. Its functions are to

deliver, but also sometimes to allow for feedback, discussion, or sharing. Media

Platforms are methods linked with technologies that allow media producers to

deliver content to media consumers or audiences.

A media platform is specifically a platform designed and built for the

purpose of delivering certain media contents to a specific audience. An effective

media platform will not only provide the content for a target audience but also

provide a mechanism for feedbacks and discussions. Social media platforms offer

several benefits for businesses looking to improve their marketing efforts. The

main ones are to increase brand awareness and visibility, improve customer

engagement and loyalty, and cost-effective advertising options. According to

Dollarhide (2024), “Media Platform plays a key role in many businesses’

marketing strategies, not surprising given the sheer number of hours people spend

each day on social websites and apps. At the same time, social media is an ever-

changing field, with relatively recent app such as TikTok.”

In accordance with the researchers, social media is also an increasingly

important part of many companies’ marketing campaigns. Social media platforms

are recognized as an effective way to not only reach customers but to engage them

with a brand also. The platforms are made up of strong online communities, and

allow brands to build their own network of potential customers. Advertising on

social media can be organic or paid, and generally there are paid options for all

budget sizes.

Advertisement. This refers to as means of communication in which a

product, brand or service is promoted to a viewership in order to attract interest,

engagement, and sales. Advertisements come in many forms, from copy to

interactive video, and have evolved to become a crucial feature of the app

marketplace. It is used to call the attention of the public to something, typically a

product or service. Square (2022) explained that an advertisement, otherwise

known as an advert or ad, is generally considered a public communication that

promotes a product, service, brand or event. To some the definition can be even

broader than that, extending to any paid communication designed to inform or

influence.

Based on the observations of the researchers, advertisements are important

for businesses because they are the most direct and proven way to reach potential

customers. Advertisements are messages paid for by those who send them and are

intended to inform or influence people who receive them. Since the goal of

advertisement is to present a product or services to the people, it can have an

instant impact on your business in a number of ways including brand sales, brand

awareness, and brand reputation.

It serves as a key element in marketing campaigns, aiming to capture

attention, create interest, and ultimately persuade consumers to take a desired

action, such as making a purchase or engaging with a brand. They help create

awareness about products, services, or ideas, ensuring that potential customers are

informed about what is being offered. The purpose of advertisement is to let

people know about the business. As stated by Ilyas et al. (2020), “By definition,

advertising is the dissemination of information privately through paid media where

the source is a sponsoring organization. Advertising is important to the business as

a whole because it enables the business to attract more customers, thus boosting

business recovery.”

According to the researchers, advertisements are a guaranteed method of

reaching an audience. By creating an engaging advertisement and spending

enough to reach your target users, it can have an immediate impact on business.

This effect could be seen in improved trade or boosted brand recognition among

many different metrics. The brand image or brand reputation will influence the

buyer whether buy or not to buy, therefore, a successful and strong advertisement

will attract more buyers across the border.

Advertisement is a tool used in marketing and advertising to promote or sell

a product, service, or idea. It allows brands to get the word out to potential

customers and is created to communicate messages, arouse curiosity, and create a

lasting impression. They’re designed to influence and persuade. When done right,

they are not just a sales pitch, they are a blend of art and science that connects with

people on various levels. Advertisements contribute to building and maintaining a

brand’s identity and reputation. Through consistent and creative messaging, a

brand can establish a connection with its target audience, and shape how they

perceive and interact with it (Knezovic, 2024).

Based on the observations of the researchers, good advertisements stand out

because they are memorable, engaging, and most importantly, effective. They

connect with their audience by understanding their needs and desires. An effective

advertisement is also clear and concise. It delivers its message without

overwhelming or confusing the audience. It strikes a balance between creativity

and clarity so that the core message is never lost in the creative elements.

Management. It is how businesses organize and direct workflow,

operations, and employees to meet company goals. The primary goal of

management is to create an environment that empowers employees to work

efficiently and productively. A solid organizational structure guides employees

and establishes the tone and focus of their work. According to Staff (2024), “The

way you choose to manage your team or department can have a direct effect on

how they are able to meet their goals. What you say and do may send powerful

messages to employees about how you value their contributions and your level of

trust in them. Understanding different management styles and when they are most

and least useful may be helpful.

The researchers believed that business management is the process of

planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the activities of a business or

organization to achieve its goals and objectives. It involves overseeing all aspects

of a business, from finance and operations to marketing and human resources.

Management is important because it helps to coordinate the efforts of different

people, improve efficiency and effectiveness, and ensure quality and consistency.

The people with the responsibility and authority to determine the overall

direction of the organization are often referred to as the management of the

organization. Management has the authority to decide what the goals of the

organization should be and how those goals will be achieved. Management is the

coordination and administration of tasks to achieve a goal. Such administration

activities include setting the organization’s strategy and coordinating the efforts of

staff to accomplish these objectives through the application of available resources.

Management can also refer to the seniority structure of staff members within an

organization (Herrity, 2024).

According to the researchers, management is an art and science of getting

work done through people. It is the process of giving direction and controlling the

various activities of the people to achieve the objectives of an organization.

Individuals in upper management must be aware of conditions in the

organization’s environment and have knowledge of the total resources of the

organization. They put these two together to determine the most promising path

for the organization to pursue.

Management, or managing, is the administration of organizations, whether

they are a business, a nonprofit organization, or a government body through

business administration or the nonprofit management. It is the process of

managing the resources of businesses, governments, and other organizations.

Riggio (2017) mentioned that management is seen as handling the more mundane

and routine tasks of the manager's job-assigning duties, measuring performance,

monitoring work behavior.

As stated by the researchers, management plays a crucial role within every

organization as it encompasses the orchestration of resources to realize specific

objectives. In simpler terms, management is the systematic procedure of

strategizing, structuring, guiding, and overseeing the endeavors of individuals

striving to meet the goals of the organization. This pivotal function is instrumental

in enabling organizations to achieve efficiency and effectiveness in their

operations.

Management is not only about overseeing tasks but also about nurturing talent,

facilitating communication, and adapting to a changing business landscape.

Ultimately, management is about achieving desired outcomes by harnessing the

potential of individuals and resources within an organization.

Research Literature

Affiliate’s network is responsible for recording and publishing such data.

With the help of a common platform advertiser and affiliates both able to find the

sales process and tracking could be done effectively. As affiliates play a major role

in online marketing platform, it is explained in different contexts as well. One

thing is quite evident by analyzing the modern marketing platform that the e-

channel would be the next trendsetting thing in the field of marketing

(Chattopadhyay, 2020). The purpose of this study is to offer a platform for

tracking, recording, and publishing data, affiliate networks play a critical role in

enabling affiliate marketing partnerships. This allows advertisers and affiliates to

efficiently manage and optimize their campaigns, resulting in increased efficiency,

transparency, and revenue growth.

TikTok can be an effective marketing platform if firms use its advantages:

word-of-mouth marketing, higher possibility of being widely shared, and

influencer marketing potential. TikTok as a marketing platform, studies

participants' market niche, and affiliate marketing's impact on customers. TikTok

affiliate marketing's content quality, audience engagement, product presentation,

pricing comparisons, and source legitimacy influence selected young

professionals' purchase decisions. The researchers found that by using a different

platform like TikTok there are benefits for marketing. Example, word-of-mouth

marketing that encourages users to create content, pure recommendation sharing

through short-form or visual content, and, the influence marketing potential that

allows it to collaborate with well-known creators for sponsored content, having

ads to earn fast, and recommended. By doing some strategy you can sell through it

without touching the products you are selling (Sibulan et al., 2024).
