Insights from Maam Jo
Leadership Styles
For managing a nursing team, the transformational leadership style seems to be the most
effective. It promotes motivation and engagement by inspiring the staff to own a vision and
work towards achieving it. But I also take into account situational factors. For example, in
emergencies, I use an authoritative approach which enables swift decision making, while in
routine operations, I adopt a more democratic approach where I make an effort to facilitate
participation and decision-making to the team.
Team Building
To achieve proper relations and interactions at the workplace, I advocate for appropriate
communication, respect, and friendly relations. I set the targets, appreciate the
participants, and reward the team performance. As for conflict resolution, I employ active
listening, mediation, and dialogue to alter deeply held views in order to settle the matter as
soon as it arises and create a safe environment.
Staff Development
I identify the professional development needs through performance appraisals, feedback,
and a competency-based evaluation. Such strategies include holding training sessions,
attending relevant workshops and mentorship. I promote professional development by
creating such opportunities, giving constructive feedback, and helping the employee
navigate the organization.
2
Patient Care Quality
To ensure that patients receive high quality care, I establish evidence-based protocols and
promote best practice adherence and lifelong learning. Measures instituted include patient
satisfaction surveys, clinical audits, and regular briefings to the team. Quality improvement
initiatives are developed in a collaborative manner to address gaps identified.
Work-Life Balance
I support work-life balance by advocating for manageable workloads, implementing flexible
scheduling, and providing access to wellness programs. I monitor for signs of burnout and
intervene early by offering counseling resources, facilitating peer support, and promoting
self-care practices among staff.
Ethical Decision-Making
When making decisions, I consider ethical principles such as beneficence, nonmaleficence,
justice, and autonomy. I ensure that patient care is prioritized while also safeguarding staff
well-being. Decisions are made collaboratively, involving relevant stakeholders to maintain
transparency and accountability.
Change Management
To implement changes effectively, I focus on clear communication, explaining the rationale
and benefits of the change. I engage staff early in the process to gather input and address
concerns. Strategies to minimize resistance include providing adequate training, seeking
champions among the team, and setting realistic timelines to ensure smooth transitions.
Technology Integration
I utilize technology to adopt instruments like electronic health records, telehealth, and
automated monitoring to optimize efficiency and quality of patient care. Difficulties come
with resistance to change and technical glitches, and these are solved by proper training,
technical assistance, and the cultivation of an adaptation-friendly culture.
3
Future of Nursing
Trends that are shaping the future of nursing leadership include the increasing use of
technology, as well as a shift toward interdisciplinary collaboration and the necessity for
sustainable workforce strategies. In preparation, I continue to stress education, innovate,
and build resilience in the staff to cope with arising challenges and opportunities in
healthcare.
