Interpolation

1- Estimates the logarithm of 5 to the base 10 (log 5) using linear interpolation.


a- Interpolate between log 4 = 0.60206 and log 6 = 0.7781513.
b- Interpolate between log 4.5 = 0.6532125 and log 5.5 = 0.7403627.
For each of the interpolations, compute the present relative error based on the true value

2- Given the data:

a- Calculate f(3.4) using Newton's' interpolating polynomial of order 1 through 3. choose the sequence of the
points for your estimates to attain the best polynomial.
b- Repeat (a) but use the Lagrange polynomial.

3-for the following four points express the third-degree interpolating polynomial in its:

a- p3(x) = a3x3 + a2x2 + a1x +a0 form. i xi f(xi)


b- Lagrange form. 0 0 10

4- use MATLAB program to generate a table corresponding to the resulted-interpolating polynomial for (1)
and (2).

Numerical differentiation and integration

1- Use zero- through third order Taylor series expansions to predict f(2) for
f(x) = 25 x3 – 6 x2 + 7 x -88
Using a base point at x = 1. Compute the true percent relative error for each approximation.

2- Use forward and backward difference approximations and centered difference approximation to estimate the
first derivative of the function in 1. Evaluate the derivative at x = 2 using a step size of h = 0.25. Compare your
result with the true value of the derivative; interpret your results on the basis of the remainder term of the Taylor
series expansion.

3- Use centered difference approximation to estimate the second derivative of the function in Prob. 1. Perform the
evaluation at x = 2 using step sizes of h = 0.2 and 0.1. Compare your results with the true value of the second
derivative. Interpret your results on basis of the reminder term of the Taylor series expansion.
