Independent Review:
In today’s lab, we studied the scientific method, focusing on accuracy and precision in measurements, as
well as lab safety protocols. The main takeaways were the importance of following procedures carefully
and understanding how accuracy and precision impact experimental results. In this lab we were also
measuring reaction time using a falling meter stick to understand how hand dominance might affect
neuromuscular response. This experiment taught us the importance of controlling variables and repeating
trials to ensure reliable data. A key takeaway was the impact of both accuracy and precision in measuring
reaction time and interpreting results. Key concepts that could appear on the next quiz include the
definitions of accuracy and precision, as well as the rules of scientific method, as they are essential for
ensuring valid experimental conclusions and can help in conducting future labs. To study how different
wavelengths of light affect Dictyota dichotoma growth, I would hypothesize that light wavelength
influences the growth rate (alternative hypothesis), while the null hypothesis would be that light
wavelength has no effect on algae growth rate. The independent variable is the wavelength of light, and
the dependent variable is the growth rate of the algae. Control variables would include water
temperature, salinity, and nutrient amounts, and the control group would be algae exposed to natural
light conditions. I predict that blue or red light would promote the best growth due to their efficiency in
photosynthesis for many marine algae.

Self Evaluation:
Assess the contribution of your work this week by using the following criteria. Please try to be as honest
and fair as possible in your assessment. Evaluations are confidential and are only used to track and
improve your performance and accountability throughout the semester. This section is only graded on
effort and completion. Your point selections will not affect your grade on this assignment.
Using the numeric scale provided below, rate your performance and contribution to your group during
this week’s lab:
5= Excellent work; was crucial component to group’s success; strongly agree
4= Very strong work; contributed significantly to group; agree
3= Sufficient effort; contributed adequately to group; occasionally or somewhat agree
2* = Insufficient effort; met minimal standards of group; occasionally or somewhat disagree
1* = Little or weak effort; didn’t meet minimal standards of group; impeded group’s success; disagree
0* = No effort; didn’t meet minimal standards of group; was detrimental to group; strongly disagree
NA = Not Applicable (If items below are not applicable to this week’s lab, simply fill the cell with “NA”
* An assessment of “2”, “1”, or “0” requires a written justification. Please briefly discuss these
assessments in the space provided.

Briefly, what were your major contributions to the completion of this week’s lab?
My contributions were the most part, but my brother also helped me to perform the experinment.
Which group member contributed the most to this week’s lab? How so?
Me, brother
Briefly, if applicable, what steps could you take to improve self-evaluation scores for next class?
Communicate with class members more
If any of your assessments require written justification, please briefly address them below:
I added this BSC 2010L class after the first week, so I missed first lab that was on BBC, therefore I
performed first lab myself.
