What comes to your mind when you hear the word
rhythm?
Rhythm surrounds us. It is present in the rising and setting
of
the sun, breathing, speaking, beating of the heart, and
walking. It brings order into one’s perception of time and
space.
The feeling of rhythm is essential in learning music or even listening to music.
In this lesson, I will accompany you in understanding what rhythm is, how it can be
defined, and how it’s used in music. Let’s start by looking at what rhythm is in music.
In your previous grade, you learned about rhythm through stick notation. This time, you will
learn that notes and rests are essential in making music.
The sounds that are formed by counting and clapping are called rhythm. Rhythm can be
understood using images. Let's say you are a musician about to play music by using a drum .
You can tap the drum or you may use drumsticks to play the note pattern shown below.and
rests.
Rhythm is one of the most important elements in
music. It is the gasoline of music. It comes from the
Greek word rhythmos (ῥυθμός), meaning “any
measured flow”
1. Thus, it pertains to everything that involves the flow
of time in music.
Music is made up of notes and rests of different time value or length, thus we have rhythm,
and we measure the value of notes in beats.

ACTIVITY 1:
A. Identify the different notes and rests below. Write your answer on the answer sheet.
B. Write the beat of each note and rest inside the box. Write your answer on the answer
sheet.
Generally, rhythm is about the duration of musical sounds and rests in time. It can move fast
or slow depending on the combination of notes and rests in the rhythmic pattern.

Rhythm is based on the assigned grouping of beats called meter. Meter is also known
as a measure , is indicated by the time signature written at the beginning of a musical piece.
The time signatures are important in reading and writing music. They tell us how to count and
group notes and which beats we should put emphasis on.
A time signature is made up of two numbers, one on top of the other and looks a bit
like a fraction. We usually see these numbers at the beginning of each music score.
The top number tells how many beats a measure may
have, while the bottom number represents the kind of
note that receives one beat.
In the example above, it means that the
four-four time signature has four beats in
a measure (each measure is divided by
bar lines), and the quarter note receives one beat.
When notes and rests are combined, they can produce beautiful music. They are
arranged based on time signature to form a rhythmic pattern. The rhythmic pattern is
the flow of the series of notes and rests in a musical piece. The idea of rhythm can be
understood through the help of beats. A beat is the basic unit of time in music, and
when repeated in a regular pattern, it creates a pulse.

If you listen to a piece of music in 4-4 time signature and clap or tap your foot along
to it, you are following along with the pulse and clapping on each beat.
So, how to create a rhythmic pattern?

You can create a rhythmic pattern in different meters. There are three kinds of a
meter. Look at the images below.
The meter of music can be demonstrated through conducting. Here are examples of
conducting patterns:
Remember these:
1. Rhythm refers to the flow of music through time.
2. Notes and rests represent sound and silence in music.
3. A rhythmic pattern is the grouping of beats in the musical composition.
4. Meter is the arranged group of beats in music.
5. A time signature is to specify how many beats there are in each meter and
what note value constitutes one beat.
ACTIVITY 2:“Rhythm Relay”
DIRECTION: Divide the class into small groups (4–5 members per group).
● Teams line up relay-style.
● The first player from each team picks a rhythm strip from a box or table, claps (or
plays) the rhythm correctly, and returns to tag the next player.
● A teacher or student-leader verifies if the rhythm is performed correctly.
● If correct, the team earns a point; if not, the player goes to the back and tries
again.

Reflection:
1. What rhythms did you find easy or hard?
2. How did your team help you succeed?
3. What did you learn about rhythm today?
Reflect on the following questions. Answer each question in two (2) to three (3)
sentences only.
1. Why do rhythmic patterns work wonders in music?
2. What do you think will happen if rhythm does not exist in music?

Are you aware of the rhythm in your life?
Make a journal of your daily activities. Be mindful of the
time you spent in each activity.
Then, try to identify patterns that might help you to
self-improvement.
A. Directions: Analyze the series of notes below. Then, identify the correct time
signature. Write your answer in the box before each number.
B. In a short bond paper, create a simple rhythmic pattern for duple, triple, and
quadruple meter. Each meter must have at least 3 measures and must use at least 4
kinds of notes and rests divided by bar lines.
ASSIGNMENT:
Directions: Read the news on the correct time signature for the “Lupang Hinirang” as
required by the Philippine government. Then answer the following questions:
1. Why it is important to follow the correct time signature of the Philippine
National Anthem?
2. Are there penalties for the improper singing of the song?If there is, what are they?
