A school as a Social, Cultural, and Community Institution

School -is an educational institution design to provide learning spaces and learning environment for the
teaching of students under the direction of teachers.

Social Institution -is an important human organization in a culture group that help society to survive.

School as a Social Institution

> School is a social organization establish to transfer the values of community, society, or a nation
through the planned educational experiences to the younger generation.

> It is established set of norms and subsystem that support each society’s survival.

> It is the most important social institution.

> It is the place where child learn interacting and communication skills.

School as Cultural Institution

> Transmit culture

> It is accumulated knowledge, values, and skills from one generation to another.

School Culture - is the perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, relationships, and values of student, teachers, staff,
and administrators that influence customs, traditions, and social expectations, with in school building.

School Rituals - routines that are infused with deeper significance.

School Traditions - are significant events that have special history and meaning and occur year in and
year out.

School Ceremonies - are elaborated as culturally sanctioned events that provide a welcome spiritual
boost.

Community Institution

Community – a group of people residing in the same locality and under the same government or a group
or class having common interest.
School and Community Partnership – means school head, teacher, learners, and non-teaching personnel
working together with civic religious leaders, alumni, other parents, non-government organization for
the good of children.

What can the community do for school?

1. Brigada Eskwela - this program engages all education stake holders to contribute their time,
effort, and resources in ensuring that public school facilities are set in time for the forthcoming
school opening.
2. Curriculum development - means use of community resources for learning.
3. Work experience program – business establishment and officers in the community can serve
training ground for leaner.
4. Remediation and enrichment class - parents and retired teachers maybe involved in the school
reading remediation and learning enrichment program.
5. Youth development programs – the young may involve themselves and develop their skill and
talents.
6. Community service – some examples are offer tutoring services, coach sport for local kids,
supports donation drive for less fortunate.

What can school do for communities in return?

1. Classroom used by community organization for meetings.


2. School used as a polling place and venue for medical mission which it may co- sponsor with the
rural health unit.
3. School used by a rural health unit for mother’s class on child care.
4. School used as an evacuation center.
5. School used for community assemblies.
6. School basketball court used for local celebrations and barangay sport league.
7. School conduct livelihood skills training program for parents and out of school youth by using
school resources.
