Complex Engineering Problem-Final

The document outlines a complex engineering problem for second-year construction engineering students at NED University, focusing on calculating discharge in a stream using fluid mechanics principles. Students are required to collect data, apply three different approaches for discharge measurement, and verify results using computational tools like Excel and programming languages. The expected outcomes include a report, spreadsheet, and code file, with evaluation criteria based on submission timeliness, approach correctness, diagram accuracy, and programming quality.

Discharge Measurement

CEP Problem description

A company wants to calculate the discharge in the stream. For this purpose, survey is
conducted and data at different positions of stream is collected. Following table shows
measurements along the X-section of a stream.

Depth ‘y’ Velocity ‘V’ (ft/sec) at

Position
(ft) 0.2y 0.6y 0.8y

1 4.85 2.82 1.76 4.36
2 3.86 3.85 2.53 3.68
3 5.25 2.56 2.94 2.17
4 3.68 3.95 2.68 3.83
5 2.85 1.83 3.85 2.96

Apply your skills learnt in the course of Fluid Mechanics-I (CE-219) and calculate the
discharge through the stream using three different approaches.

Draw a schematic diagram and show your calculations in tabular form.

Assume that the actual discharge through the stream is 500 cusecs. Compare the results
calculated through above approaches with the actual discharge and write your conclusions.

Verify your manual results and schematic diagram using the spreadsheet program (such as
EXCEL) and AutoCAD respectively.
Suppose that the company also wants to develop a program/code to calculate the
discharge in the stream. Your task is to apply the computational tools (such as MatLAB, R,
Python etc.) learnt in the course of Introduction to Computing (CE-111) and write a
program/code to verify your results.

Assumptions

Measurements shown in the table is along the X-section of a stream at an interval of 20 ft.
Assume that the actual discharge through the stream is 500 cusecs
Assume surface velocity of stream as 3 ft/sec.

Constraints

Use 0.9 as the conversion factor for measurement of discharge through surface velocity.
At least three (3) approaches must be applied to measure discharge in the stream.

Identification and description of areas of CEP where implementation of

computational tools is required by students

Discharge measurement in open channels is a challenging task and time consuming. Use of
software may reduce time consumption and help students to work efficiently with more
accuracy.
