EDITORIAL

Welcome to the 36th Annual APPI Conference!

The APPI board is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our President, colleague and above all our dearest
friend, Alberto Gaspar. We believe that going ahead with this year’s Conference is a way to honour his legacy
and give the opportunity to gather his APPI family and do what he did during his life: the professional
development of the EFL teachers with (He)Art.

This year’s APPI Conference motto mirrors our beloved President’s legacy, not only living and teaching with
Art but also with Heart.

In Alberto’s own words a few months ago:

“Some argue that teaching at large is a science, some that it is an art. And still others argue that it is a little
of both plus a craft. As to being a science, it is thoroughly clear that there are ways of doing EFL teaching
(strategies, practices…) that research has shown to be effective in boosting learning (knowledge, skills, and
competencies); as to teaching being an art, teaching EFL shows how teachers work creative ways to enhance
learning, thus making students enjoy learning. What about the (he)art of teaching EFL? The bracketed ‘he’
can make all the difference if we do believe that ‘at the heart of every great teacher lies’ – among other
features – ‘empathy, positivity, the desire to build something, and the will to inspire.’ This is what Rusul
Alrubail (Toronto, Canada) believes to be at the heart of teaching…”

Conference delegates can count on a promising programme which focuses on topics that go from personal
growth to the art of teaching through different and inclusive approaches, all available in a wide range of
plenaries, workshops, talks and a discussion on Artificial Intelligence in the EFL classroom/environment. This
will surely bring together professionals with common interests to not only discuss issues, but also to share
and create new ideas and network.

During the whole Conference – or part of it – delegates are invited to make the most of the presentations
led by distinguished speakers, and to socialise, meet friends and make new ones; to have the opportunity to
participate in the cultural events – Piano concert and book signing moments. Members are also invited to
attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held on Saturday evening; and the special APPI draw for
valuable prizes – this can only contemplate winners who are present at the AGM. Delegates should also take
some time to visit the exhibition hall and the bookshops.

APPI’s warm thanks go to all the delegates, sponsors, speakers and exhibitors for their presence and ongoing
support.

Welcome to the 36th Annual APPI Conference, welcome to Lisbon!

Mentors, Myths, and Memories: The Dream Lives of Teachers

The first stage of Teacher Development is to look inwards. Our growth as professionals is rooted in personal narrative,
understanding our lives as teachers, and examining the different paths we might take. Through the lens of personal
narrative, we will look at different ways of developing, e.g., through courses or mentoring, and engage in some enjoyable
activities designed to explore our identities as teachers.

Intercultural communication in the EFL context: preparing global citizens

English as a lingua franca is vital in connecting students, especially in multi-cultural/-lingual contexts. By promoting
intercultural communication (IC) in ELT, learners are also prepared to become global citizens. In this study, we analyze
two national EFL textbooks (years 7 & 10) and present further suggestions on how to develop IC in the EFL contexts,
hence bridging existing gaps in EFL classrooms.

Engagement in the Primary and Lower Secondary EFL classrooms

If you were to ask language teachers what two characteristics they thought were important for learning, many would
answer learner interest and participation, two principle aspects of learner engagement. But what does engagement entail,
and how can primary and lower secondary EFL teachers encourage learner engagement in their classrooms? This talk
attempts to answer these questions.

Fifteen Ways to Attack a Text

Many students sleepwalk while reading. They don't question what they read or talk back to the author. This presentation
describes ways to help learners interact with texts, inviting them to occupy different roles, e.g., critic, editor, writer. Instead
of reading passively, the student reformulates, changes, and "plays with" texts. These practical, enjoyable activities can
be used with a wide range of learners.

Lea(R)ning Into the Future

As the world we live in changes to embrace tech futures, a change that is advancing in leaps and bounds, how and what
we teach in our education system will have to be redefined and restructured. There will have to be a mindset shift but
without actions to accompany that mindset we will continue to fail our students and limit their future. However, there is
one constant in this future learning scenario – it is the importance of the human relationship.

Teaching from the heart

The pandemic brought positive and negative implications, including our ability to teach personally in an apparently
impersonal environment. Another has been to make our teaching practice more inclusive, as nurturers and carers. Using
teacher testimonies, this talk explores the benefits of adopting an empathic approach, promoting the idea that getting to
