 Carpet Maintenance

Routine maintenance is essential to prolong the life of your rug and keep it looking its best for years to
come. Rugs need special attention and the right kind of pad to insure a longer life.

General Rug Maintenance

Prevention is better than a cure as the saying goes, so we have compiled a list of ways in which you can
prevent your rugs ever getting damaged:

•Avoid your rug (and floors) getting dirty by protecting entrances to your home with dedicated
barrier mats.
•Consider a “no shoes ” policy in your home. This will also protect hard flooring and carpeted areas.
(In many countries this is the norm)
•If possible rotate your rug periodically to distribute the areas of heavy traffic.
•Never place rugs on damp or wet floors
 Carpet Maintenance

Vacuuming and Brushing Your Rugs

Regularly vacuuming your rug is fundamental in prolonging the life and preventing premature wear. Regular vacuuming is
necessary to remove dirt and dust . Accumulated dirt can break down the fibers in your rug and make it look dull and dirty.

Machine Made Rugs

These types of rugs with a cut pile should be vacuumed with cleaners that have beater bars. This will keep the pile upright and
loosen any grit in the base of the pile.
Periodically, the rug should be turned pile down and the back of the rug should be vacuumed with an upright cleaner. The
beater bar set low to loosen any grit in the pile. The rug should then be turned the correct way and vacuumed as above

Spills and Cleaning Tips

Firstly, you should never rub the surface pile of a rug. The correct way to approach a spillage or mark is to blot the area with a
clean, absorbent cloth or white paper towel. Try not to make the spillage area larger.
Secondly, you should scrape up any excess spillage with a blunt knife or spatula.
Before using any cleaning products on your rug, you should always ‘spot test’ the rug to ensure the solution you are using will
not damage or bleach the fibres of the rug. Washing up liquid, abrasive cleaners or caustic solutions (including some carpet
cleaning products) contain bleaching agents and these can damage the pile of your rug, so it’s important to find the correct
cleaning solution.
 Carpet Maintenance

Always brush the pile so the affected area is the same direction as the rest of the rug ( A normal comb is
very good for this as it separates the tufts and helps prevent a matted appearance ).

Minimize spills and you minimize the possibility for stains. It’s great to think if you’re careful you won’t
get spills on the rug. Spills can and do happen. When they do, here are a few tips to removing the spill:
• Blot as much liquid as possible with a white cloth as quickly as you can.
• Do NOT rub – it will only push the stain into the fibers.
• Rinse the area with warm water and then blot again with a white cloth. Absorb as much of the water
as possible, and allow the area to dry undisturbed.
• Don’t step on the wet area or replace furniture until it is completely dry because it can distort the
pile. Also, a wet rug will attract stains so it’s best to avoid the area completely.
• You may use a hairdryer or fan to speed up the drying process.
• When it is dry, vacuum to fluff up the nap.
• If the stain persists, use a spot cleaner that is safe for your carpet
 Carpet Maintenance
Expert cleaning.
Never underestimate the power of a good professional cleaning. Not only will your rug look better, it will last longer too.
Periodic cleaning will prolong the life of your rug.
We offer pick-up for both rug cleaning and repair at a small charge, or you can bring your rug to us for cleaning.

Rug Storage
If you are planning to store your rug, there are a few steps to take to minimize the potential for damage and keep it good
shape for when you’re ready to use it again.
• Have it cleaned before storing. This eliminates the potential for infestation, and can keep spots and stains from
worsening with storage.
• Don’t store the rug until it is completely dry.
• Roll your rug into a tight roll. If it is silk or wool with pile, leave the pile facing out to reduce stress on the backing.
• Wrap your rug in paper, not plastic. Plastic does not allow the rug to breathe and it can become musty or mildewed.
• Lay your rug on a shelf – not on the floor. Don’t store it upright, this can cause warping and damage the rug.
• Check on your rug periodically. If you are storing it for a short time, this is probably unnecessary, but for extended
storage you’ll want to ensure that it hasn’t become wet or dry rotted.

1.0 SEQUENCE OF WORK:
1.1. Installation of Carpet Rolls
1.1.1. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

- All clearance shall be obtained from other trades prior to starting carpet works.
- Any permits required shall be obtained.
- Material submittals, shop drawings, Method Statements, ITPs and other engineering
documents shall be approved by the responsible personnel.

1.1.2. DELIVERY, STORAGE & HANDLING:

- Deliver and store the carpet rolls in factory packaging.

- The carpet rolls must be categorized and stored in order to easily retrieve the exact color;
pattern designated for use in the particular areas as per work sequence.
- The materials must be stored properly to avoid damage and must be stored in the conditions
as recommended by the manufacturer.
- The materials to be stored in adequate temperature conditions, away from sunlight in order to
maintain the quality of the material.
- Materials which have been damaged during delivery must be removed from site.
- Moving of the materials from the store to site must be done in accordance with manufacturer’s
recommendation and by trained personnel.
- The accessories to be used in the installation of the carpet floor, which includes the underlay
and adhesive as well must be properly stored.

1.1.3. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR CARPET ROLLS:

General:
- Carpet is to be installed in accordance with the requirements of BS 5229 by skilled operatives
so that it is flat and sufficiently taut to ensure that movement of furniture over the surface does
not cause racking to take place.
- Carpet is not to be laid until:
o Ceiling works and painting application are completed and approved.
o The building is weather-tight.
o The wet trades have finished their work.
o All painted work is finished and dry.
o The air-conditioning system is fully operational if the carpet is to be laid in the hot
months between April and November.
o Socket outlets, duct covers and the like around which the carpet needs to be cut have
been fixed.
o The substrate is dry and clean.
- Carpet is to be cut and fitted to all socket outlets and other fixtures and be cut in at all doorways
and recesses. It is not to be pieced in.
- Where practicable, room coverings are to start with a full width of carpet on the same side as
the door.
- On completion of the installation, all loose nap ends are to be trimmed and the carpet cleaned
with a beater type vacuum cleaner. Upon completion of the cleaning, the carpet shall be
covered with clean dustsheets, hardboard or similar, as necessary to prevent damage from dust
and traffic until handover.
- Spare carpet suitable for patching is to be handed to the Engineer.

Floor Preparation:
- The floor must be dry, free of dust, dirt, oil or any debris that could affect the adhesion of the
carpet modules to the floor.
- The floor must be level and smooth, depressions and cracks must be filled and all protrusion
levelled.
- Do not allow cutback asphaltic adhesive or any other non-approved adhesive to come into
contact with new adhesives.
- Determine Floor Porosity: To determine subfloor porosity, apply a droplet of water the size of
a dime to the subfloor. The water should dissipate within 80 seconds. Porous floors will have a
reduced adhesive set up time while non-porous floors will have an increased adhesive set up
time, due to the high solids content of recommended adhesives.
- A proper installation depends on the proper site conditions. The following conditions must be
maintained for 24 hours prior to, during and permanently after installation:
o HVAC System: Must be operational maintaining the following conditions.
o Temperature: The installation site, carpet and adhesive must be between 18°C and
35°C. The adhesive will not function properly when applied over an extremely cold
surface. Do not begin the installation it the subfloor temperature is below 15°C.
o Humidity: The installation site’s ambient relative humidity must not exceed 75%.
o Moisture: Conduct relative humidity testing. Results must be below 85% (ASTM F-2170),
or the Anhydrous Calcium Chloride test must not exceed 5.0 lbs per 1000 SF per 24
hours ASTM F-1869 test}.
o Do not begin the installation if an unacceptable moisture level is detected. If excessive
moisture is present, the general contractor or client must be advised and a decision
made if the installation is to begin.
Execution:
- Start with laying the underlay. Cut the underlay approximately 15cm oversize than the required
size around the perimeter of the room.
- Dry lay the underlay with the printed side up and ensure that all the edges are covered and in
right angles to any floorboards. If possible, the underlay must be also laid in right angles to any
carpet seams that may be added later.
- Roll back the length of the underlay to expose one-half of the sub-floor.
- Use adhesive and apply it on the sub-floor. Use a small roller to apply evenly on the perimeter
of the rooms and then use a larger roller to cover the whole sub-floor area with the adhesive.
- Once the adhesive has dried to a clear and tacky state, the underlay can be rolled back to place
ensuring that all seams are closely butted.
- Roll back the underlay from the unglued half and repeat the process for the remaining floor
area.
- Once finished, cut the underlay approximately 6mm from the skirting or wall to leave a gap for
a tucked finish. The exact gap can be calculated by measuring the depth of the carpet and
underlay combined and setting a gap of two-thirds that thickness.
- Use a carpet roller and roll it all over the area of the installed underlay in order to ensure that
the adhesive is evenly applied to the whole surface area and so that the underlay may fix in
position avoiding any future air pockets.
- The next stage is the installation of the broadloom carpet. Firstly, unroll the carpet and dry lay
them into the desired position and locations as per the approved shop drawings.
- Cut the carpet to approximately 50mm larger than the actual size of the room on all sides.
- Now, press the carpets onto place at the edges using a carpet tucker as the creases will help
the carpet to reposition later.
- Fold the carpet back onto itself to leave half of the area uncovered.
- Apply the adhesive using a notched trowel.
- Start applying the adhesive properly at the edges and then continue the application to the
overall remaining area of underlay.
- Roll back the carpet to the desired position onto the wet adhesive and using a carpet roller, roll
out all the areas of the applied carpet to even out and fix in position and avoid any air bubbles.
- Always roll from the center of the room towards the perimeter and in both the directions.
- Repeat the gluing and rolling process for the other remaining areas.
- Apply gap sealant to the edge of carpet seams to hold different adjacent carpets in place and
to provide a perfect butt joint. Carefully place the adjacent carpet roll to provide a seamless
appearance to the finished carpet.
- A grooming roller can be used to even out the joint area and provide a neat finish so that the
adhesive and gap sealant are properly and evenly applied to the joint area.
Finishing:
- A neat tucked finish can be achieved by cutting the carpet a bit oversize and then tucking the
carpet into the 6mm gap that was cut earlier between the underlay and the wall/ skirting.
- Press the carpet into the edges to form the impression for the exact tucked finish of the carpet.
- Cut the carpet in the corners and tuck them in to achieve easy execution of the finishing
procedure.
- Then, cut the excess carpet and use a carpet tucker to tuck in the carpet on all edges and
provide a neat finish to the room.
Post-Installation Care (Not in SE Scope):
- Use plywood over the carpet when heavy objects are moved within 24 hours after installation.
- A non-staining building material paper must be placed over the carpet to protect it when
additional construction activity is to take place that would soil or strain it. Do not use plastic
sheeting as it will trap moisture.
- Protection is not in the scope of SE.
1.1.4. FINAL INSPECTION / ACCEPTANCE:

- Final inspection shall be done and approved by the Consultant prior to installation of
protection.
