Aspen, in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, is a ski resort town and


year-round destination for outdoor recreation. Outdoor recreation in the
surrounding White River National Forest serves as a summertime counterpart to the
city's four ski areas.
Aspen is the world's second-highest-rated ski resort in terms of "the quality and
reliability of their conditions and their capacity to withstand climate change.
Aspen has a humid continental climate, Summer lows and winter highs are relatively
moderate, and frosts are rare in summer and winter days often averaging above
freezing.

It all started with silver, In


the fall of 1878, the Hayden Geological
Survey released reports that indicated promising geological
formations for the presence of silver in the Roaring Fork
Valley. At the time, the U.S. government had inflated the price
of the precious metal and was buying up silver and gold to
back the dollar. With that in mind, silver prospectors headed
out west to try their hand at making it big with silver mining.

Aspen is in a remote area of the Rocky Mountains' Sawatch Range and Elk Mountains,
along the Roaring Fork River at an elevation just below 8,000 feet (2,400 m) on
the Western Slope, 11 miles (18 km) west of the Continental Divide.

Independence Pass
Independence Pass, originally known as Hunter Pass, is a high mountain pass in central Colorado,
United States. It is at elevation 12,095 ft (3,687 m) on the Continental Divide in the Sawatch Range
of the Rocky Mountains. The pass is midway between Aspen and Twin Lakes, on the border
between Pitkin and Lake counties. It is the dividing point between watersheds that drain into pacific
ocean versus that drain into Atlantic ocean.

Maroon bells

The Maroon Bells are two peaks in the Elk Mountains, Maroon Peak and North
Maroon Peak, separated by about half a kilometer (0.3 miles). The
namesake
“Maroon” comes from the reddish hue of the rocks, which glows
magnificently at sunrise and sunset, making for spectacular
views.

Founded as a mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom and later named Aspen for
the abundance of aspen trees in the area
