Bullet Train

India is set to establish its first Bullet Train corridor between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, significantly reducing travel time from 8 hours to 3 hours with speeds of up to 332 km/h. The project will utilize LiDAR technology for efficient surveying and will be primarily funded through a loan from Japan. The corridor will feature a mix of elevated and underground tracks, including a 7 km underwater segment.

Bullet Train A milestone of India…

Dr. Ravi P. Agrahari

(Faculty of Vision IAS)
PhD IIT Delhi, Author of Mc Graw Hill

Dr. Ravi P. Agrahari

• Gatiman, Duranto, Tejas, Shatabdi – speed 140 – 160 km/hour
• Mumbai to Ahmedabad in 3 hours (Now it takes total 8 hours).
• Speed 302 km/hour
• It will across through ocean – 21 km length tunnel from Thane to Virar.

Bullet Trains

Bullet train is not an official word used for High speed railways, it is only the
unofficial name of first high speed train of Japan.

A High Speed Rail can be defined as rails that operate at a minimum speed of 200
km per hour on tracks built specially for high-speed travel.

On the basis of technology employed in the trains, it can be classified into two
categories:

1. Tilt Technology
2. Non – tilt Technology

Curve railway track

Dr. Ravi P. Agrahari

Tilt technology: the trains based on this technology are
known as Tilting train. They have the capability to tilt
their body towards the curve.

This tilt allows the train to pass the curve at higher

speed.

It may run at a speed of 200 km/h for upgraded track

and 250 km/h or even faster for new track.

This technology is expensive and can generally

functions at larger passenger base regions.

Dr. Ravi P. Agrahari

Non-tilt technology: the trains based on this technology run on straight
special tracks or tracks with large curve radius. Exclusive tracks are laid
down which provides higher level of passenger comfort.
Trains can run at 250 km/h or more speed in such tracks. This technology
provides high efficiency of rail freight transport.

INDEPENDENT WHEEL

Dr. Ravi P. Agrahari

Features of a high speed train

- Shape should be streamlined

- Aluminum alloy is used in body, as it is lighter in weight.

-A standard gauge used for high-speed rail is of 1435 mm width and Curve
radius is typically above 4.5 km.

- Electric power is used to operate high-speed rail.

-Electricity is generated by renewable sources (wind, ocean and geothermal etc).

- High-speed train lines rest on non-ballasted or slab track. Slab track is a

multilayered (made up of asphalt or concrete) system that assures track stability,
requires less maintenance cost, bears high load and has a long service life.

BULLET TRAIN

•With India on its path of setting up its very first Bullet Train along the
busy Ahmedabad-Mumbai path.

•The railways has announced the use of LiDAR technology speed up

work on India’s first high-speed train corridor.

•The use of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) will allow survey of
the 508-km corridor to be completed in 9-10 weeks against the
normal 6-8 months.

•The advantage of LiDAR is that it penetrates through vegetation to

identify the accurate level and contour of land.

Difference between Bullet Train and Maglev

MAGLEV TRAIN BULLET TRAIN

Do not need wheel May or may not need wheels
Very low noise Noise is a major issue
Highest energy efficiency Is more efficient than conventional
trains
Capital cost is very high Less expensive than Maglev
Technology available in a few Available is most developed
countries countries

High Speed Rail Corporation of India Limited (HSRC)

It has been formed on the directions of the Ministry of Railways,

Government of India, for development and implementation of high
speed rail projects.

India’s Bullet Train
•As per plan, the entire corridor will be on elevated track except 21 km which
will be underground, of which 7 km will pass under the sea. About 81% of the
funding for this project is going to come from a loan from Japan. (Under water
train in the world – USA, RUSSIA, JAPAN & CHINA)

•The breakup of the cost has been finalized as 25% Maharashtra, 25% Gujarat
and 50% centre. It has a proposed speed of 332 KMpH with a train capacity of
900 of 1200 passengers.

•The proposed route has a total of 12 stations on the route — four of which
are in Maharashtra and eight in Gujarat.

Maglev Trains

• Relatively less maintenance. Magnetic

levitation technique.
• It is a new version of bullet trains or high-speed
• trains.
• They are levitated, propelled and guided by using magnets.
• The friction, energy consumption, and the noise
• production are almost zero.
• Highly energy efficient and comfortable version of high-speed
trains.
• Maglevs do not need maintenance frequently because wheels and
the rails do not wear out.

Dr. Ravi P. Agrahari

Attractive and repulsive forces are required to run
train in motion.
Two type of Maglev train:
1. Electro magnetic Propulsion
2. Electro dynamic suspension

Electro magnetic propulsion technique is required for

the movement of train.
Electro dynamic suspension train in Japan. Where
superconductor is used. Metal at -278 degree C
become superconductor and resistance become
approx zero. This bullet train is more faster. Its speed
is around 601 km/hour.
