Lesson Objectives
At the end of the lesson, 75 % of the students are expected to:
1. Discuss the meaning of an expanded definition;
2. Create a graphic organizer showing the technical terms in research; and,
3. Reflect a willingness to explain oneself when expressing issues in different patterns in expanding
definition patterns.

Expanded Definition defines and explains a single term, concept, or
subject. It goes deeper than a simple dictionary definition.
An extended definition may explain the word’s etymology or historical
roots, describe sensory characteristics of something (how it looks, feels,
sounds, taste, smells), identify its parts, indicate how something is used,
explain what it is not, provide an example of it, and/or note similarities or
differences between this term and other word or things.
PATTERNS IN EXPANDING DEFINITIONS
TERMS DEFINITION/ EXAMPLE
1. Example A pattern that provides a concrete example
of a term to make it easier to understand.
Example:
A. Tools are devices or implements,
especially one held in the hand, used to
carry out particular function.(Dictionary)
B. Hammers, pliers, and screwdrivers are
examples of tools. (Example)
2. Cause A pattern that analyzes “WHY” something
and Effect happened.
Example:
Water pollution can result in the death of
many people because of the harmful
chemicals on the water. Throwing garbage
on the sea and rivers can cause water
pollution. (Cause and Effect)
3. Compare A pattern that shows how the subject is
and like/unlike on something. It describes the
Contrast similarities and differences of two ideas or
concepts.
Example:
Hard wheat and soft wheat are both flours.
Hard wheat is a kind of flour made from
high- protein wheat varieties. Soft wheat is a
flour made from low-protein wheat varieties.

4. Negation A pattern that describe that describes what is
NOT about the concept. It also gives the
limitations of an idea or concept.
Example:
A. Bamboo is a giant woody grass that
grows chiefly in the tropics, where it is
widely cultivated.( Dictionary)
B. Bamboo, even it grows high and wide, it
is not classified as a tree. (Negation)
5. Etymolog A pattern that shares the origin of the word

Origin A. Webinar is a seminar conducted over the
internet. (Dictionary)
B. Webinar is a combination of the words
“web” which means internet network and
“seminar” which means a training or
meeting for discussion. (Etymology)
6. Historical A pattern that shows how a word has been
