The old covenant sacrifices were ineuflicient, ineffective and incomplete. They could not make the people perfect. The sacrifices could not fully “take away sina”. Only Jesus Christ, by His sacrifice, could satisfy God and | completely tae away our ein. 2. SUBMISSION AND SACRIFICE OF CHRIST Hebrews 10:5-9; Psalm 40:68; Matthew 26:39; Philippians 2:5-8; Hebrews 9:26;10:11,12; Galatians 1:4; 1 Peter 2:24; Hebrews 8:13 ‘The Apostle quoted the Old Testament (Psalm 40:6-8) to show Christ's submissive nature, even under the old covenant. God was not satisfied with mere sacrifice. “Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire.” “Bring no more | vain oblations...your hands are full of blood” (Isaiah 1:12-15), Without | repentance and sincere willingness to forsake their sins, their sacrifices were unacceptable. | “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart. O God, thou witt not despise” (Psalm 51:16,17). Jesus Christ came to do the will of God. the ultimate will of God was to offer His perfect blood, pay the full penalty for our sins and be our perfect Substitute. His supreme mission on earth was ty do only His Father's wil. His sacriaice was perfect because it was offered in perfect obedience to God. 3. SALVATION AND SANCTIFICATION IN THE NEW COVENANT Hebrews 10:10-18; John 1:29; Hebrews 9:12, 14,22,26; Acts 4:12; 1 John 2:1,2; Hebrews 13:12,20,21; 810-12 | ._ While the Old Testament sacrifices (all put together) could not take away sins, Christ's sacrifice took away all our sins, There is full salvation provided through the sacrifice of Christ, When we truly believe in Christ we aze saved, all our sins are forgiven; we receive grace and power to live vicloriously. More [orfected forever ther thatare senotiped flebrows o1oasy cuits saatice ever are sanctified" (He 10,14). {effective and efficacious for our sanctification. The tion that true believers reesive isnot only positional sanctification but a practical onc ‘Sanctification is the will of God (1 Thessalonians 4:3), the provision of Christ (Hebrews 13:12) and the work of the Spirit (Romans 15:16). Itle received by faith (Acts 18:9). Qur hearts must be purifed through cleansing by Chriss Blogd ifwe 19pe to see God and live with Him eternally, we must remain holy til the end (Hebrews 12:14; Matthew 5:8). IBLE STUDY 3 ENCOURAGEMENT TO CHRISTIAN PERSEVERANCE Hebrews 10:19-39 ‘These verses exhort and encourage us to endure and continue in the Lord, in submission and devotion to the Lord. Here, we have, as usu, jexhortation after the establishment of sound doctrine. This Epistle had laid a strong foundation of doctrine. Jesus Chiist, the Comerstone of the new Temple, the Foundation of the spiritual Building has been revealed in every chapter. We have had the teaching on the final, perfect, eficacious sacrifice of Christ. He has been presented as the great high prlest, The invitation now comes fo rue believers to draw near with « ie heart. We are also warned of the danger of backsliding and the damnation of apostaies, Then, we are challenged fo remuain falthful and to abide in Christ til ‘end, The believer who endures till the end is assured of final rewards and everlasting joy in the eternal presence of God. 1, CALLTO DEVOTION AND RIGHTEOUSNESS Hebrews 10:19-25; 9:8, 12; John 10:9; Hebrews 4:14-16; Bzekiel 36:25; Acts 2:42 Here, we are exhorted to “enter in”, “draw near”, “hold fast”, “provoke one another to love", “not forsake the assemabling of ourselves together”. The Whole ‘passage is introduced with “therefore”. The exhortation is based on the truth of tthe finality of Christ's sacrifice. Because of the establishment of the New Covenant by Jesus Christ the Mediator and perfect Sacrifice, we can enter with boldness into the holiest by His blood. The new possibility opened to all christians is that of fee acceas to the very presence of God. The way haa been opened fer us by Jesus, Itis anew ot exist in the Old Covenant. We must not abandon our assurance of faith even if some promises have not been fulfilled. True children of God remain immovable, assured of the faithfulness of God, who has promised. We are wared not to yield to the epirt of lukewarmness of the last days. Believers are rather to Keep on encouraging one another as we see the final day ofjudgment and rewards approaching. 2. CONSEQUENCE OF DELIBERATE REBELLION Hebrews 10:2631; 2 Peter 2:20-22; 2 Thessalonians 1:8; Hebrews 2:2,3; 6:4-8; ~ Luke 12:5; Jude 10-16 ‘What is in view in this section is the deliberate rebellion of apostates. The inspired writer describes the apostate who deliberately continues in apostasy - fighting against God and resolitely rejecting the means of his restoration to ce of God. The apostate is described as one {1) who was “Once enlightened” jcbrews 6:4), (2) who had “tasted of the heavenly gift” (Hebrews 6:4), (3) who ‘was “mado partaker of the Holy Ghost” (Hebrews 6'4), (4) who had “tasted the good word of God’ (Hebrews 6:5), (5) who had “tasted the powers of the world to Some” Hebrews 6:3}, [6] who was ‘sanctified with the Mood of the covenant” (Hebrews 10:29). BUT NOW, he (1) hag "fallen away” (Hebrews 6:5), (2) has ‘crucified again the Son of God afresh’ (Hebrews 6:6), (3) has “put Him to an m shame” (Iebrews 6), (3) has continued to sin wilfully after receiving knowledge of the truth (Hebrews 10:26), (5) “has trodden under foot the Son of God” (Hebrews 10:29), (6) “has counted the Blood of the covenant ghorowith he was sanctified an unholy thing” Hebrews 10:29), (7) has done Aoapite unto the Spirit of grace’ (Hebrews 10:29) at judgments awaiting the apostates? (1) It is “impossible to renew them to repentance” (Hebrews 6:4,6); (2) "There remaineth no more sacrifice for ln’ (Hebrews 10:26); (‘a certain fearful looking for ofJudgmont and fe tndignation’ [Hebrews 10:27) () much sorer punishment Fcbrewe 1 od {s a foarful thing to fall into the Hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31 “The spirit of God has been warning sinners, backsliders, and apostates from the beginning of the Bpistie. "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation” (Hebrews 2:4) ‘Take heed brothren, lest there be n any of you an evil heart of unbelief. In departing from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12). "Let us therefore fear, lest a promi peas Us of entering into His rest, any of ( you should seem to come short of it” (Hebrews 4:1). Ifany man draw back, my Soul shall have no pleasure in him" (Hebrews 10:38). 9, CONTINUING STEDFASTLY TILL RAPTURE AND REWARDS, Hebrews 10:32-39; John 8:31; Acts 14:21,22; Colossians 1:23; Revelation 3:11; Matthew 10:22; 24:13 ‘After speaking of the worst possible situation, apostasy and consequent judgment, the wilter now apesies to encourage believers fo atedfastnses ana perseverance’ Looking back, the believere were told to remember the former days, whai aifictions they had endured. Looking forward, they should be assured that in heaven, a better and an enduring substance awaited them. The suffering of the past endured and the glory of the future being expected should encourage them to persevere til the end. ‘These faithful people showed evidence of genuine faith. After being “iluminated”, they endured allictions, they endured reproaches, they took the spoiling of their goods joyfully and they remained in fellowship with others who were being persecuted, They were (aa we are being) encouraged to keep the confidence they had in the Lard, We should all “hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering” until the end. - Faithful believers afe reminded of the sure promise of eternal rewards ifwe will endure till the end, He assures us that the coming of the Lord is very near. Saved by grace through faith, we must continue to live by faith and never draw ‘back from the Lord. Only then are we sure ofa glorious end.
