DIVINE CONTROL

From the December 1939 issue of The Christian
Science Journal
DIVINE control is felt and experienced by men through
the exalting influence of spiritual understanding. Truth,
or God, governs through spiritual law, which destroys
erroneous beliefs and lights the way to health,
harmony, and freedom. "Perfect love casteth out fear"
through the accession of the love which reflects God.
When Jacob struggled alone at Peniel, the angel
messenger came to him and strengthened him, and
when he tenaciously held to the perfect concept, his
nature was transformed. As Jesus stood fast in the face
of temptation, angels, true ideas of God, ministered
unto him.
In this age, through her dire need and long search for
the true concept of God, there was revealed to Mary
Baker Eddy the Christ-idea of healing sin and sickness.
It was the light of spiritual reality dawning in the
consciousness of one who was turning away from
material sense. Her immediate realization of health,
together with the gradual unfoldment of the spiritual
laws of being, brought forth the revelation of Christian
Science, which demonstrates God's control over all. In
her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the
Scriptures" (p. 259) she states, "Immortal ideas, pure,
perfect, and enduring, are transmitted by the divine
Mind through divine Science, which corrects error with
truth and demands spiritual thoughts, divine concepts,
to the end that they may produce harmonious results."
Christian Science reveals to mankind the true concept
of God as infinite Mind, and of man as His idea, or
perfect expression. It reveals that God is Spirit, Life,
Truth, and Love; and that He governs His creation, man
and the universe, through spiritual law or divine will.
The real man has no mind of his own apart from God;
he has no life apart from Life, God, and he knows no
will but God's will. He is completely and perfectly
governed by divine Principle, Love. Man must
consequently be whole, pure, intelligent, spiritual,
loving, and unlimited, constantly expressing the
harmony of divine control.
Fear, or lack of control, as manifested by mankind, is
due to the worship of false gods and ignorance of
spiritual law. It is clear that men are influenced by the
thoughts they entertain. Furthermore, it is proved in
Christian Science that men govern their bodies by the
thoughts they hold regarding them, whether these
thoughts be those of sin, sickness, and discord, or of
health, harmony, and freedom. Control, then, lies
strictly in the mental realm. Men are deceived by the
belief that matter thinks, and that material sense
constitutes a law about which one can do little or
nothing. This ignorance seems to limit and restrict
one's activity, and subjects one to changing belief, sin,
sickness, and death.
Reaching out for some higher power, men find, through
Christian Science, the enlightening understanding
which leads to the spiritual sense of being. On page
251of our textbook Mrs. Eddy makes it clear that we
learn to govern the body "from the higher
understanding that the divine Mind makes perfect, acts
upon the so-called human mind through truth, leads the
human mind to relinquish all error, to find the divine
Mind to be the only Mind, and the healer of sin, disease,
death." What freedom and joy come with the
understanding that Spirit is God, and that man, as the
offspring of God, is spiritual and not material.
In turning from the worship of matter to the worship of
Spirit, men begin to bring their lives under the control
of divine Mind. As we enthrone Truth in our
consciousness, we find that by its very presence it
destroys error; as we worship Spirit, we lose our
respect for and fear of matter or mortal law, and as we
surrender to the government of Soul, we gradually gain
control over material sense. Thus as we seek to know
God aright, it becomes evident that His presence is
witnessed by spirituality, honesty, gentleness, purity,
unselfishness, humility, love. These qualities,
emanating from divine Mind, are expressed in the real
man. Then, as we accept and actively express them in
daily living, we begin spiritually to individualize perfect
man and to experience the harmony of the divine Mind.
In order to avail ourselves of this spiritual power we
must seek it and strive for it. The value we place upon
our worship of God and the fidelity with which we seek
the truth of being determine the measure of our
experience of divine control. Because of his supreme
devotion to Spirit, Jesus was enabled to realize the
angelic ministration, and, later, to speak "as one having
authority." Through his persistent hold upon the true
concept, Jacob received the illumination that
transformed him. Jesus cited as the greatest of all
commandments, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with
all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy
mind." Regarding this commandment, Mrs. Eddy states
(ibid.,p. 9) "It involves the Science of Life, and
recognizes only the divine control of Spirit, in which
Soul is our master, and material sense and human will
have no place."
The law of God is universal in scope, but it is individual
in application. A determined stand for Truth in the
consciousness of one individual has often brought the
divine influence to bear upon situations involving many
people. A simple instance of this came into the
experience of a Christian Scientist who was involved in
a proposed plan which would have included drinking
and the attendant evils which go with it. In a few
moments, apart from the others, he sought the aid of
Mind to solve the seeming conflict. He began to realize
his supreme obligation to God alone. Above all human
connections was that perfect relation of God and man,
and he saw that he must cling to that obligation first
and fulfill it. Further, he declared that there was one
real attraction, that of divine Love, which power
overruled and nullified any opposite claim to power or
allurement. When he returned to the group, new and
improved plans had been proposed, more joy and
harmony were expressed, and the evening was spent in
harmless entertainment. It was clear to him that this
was not a case of domination through human will, but it
was the control of the divine Mind brought to light
through prayer. How grateful he was to know that he
could never be helplessly entangled in mortal mind!
Though not conscious of this divine control, others were
benefited and guided by it. Right ideas have their origin
in divine Mind and derive their power from God.
As Science unfolds the real Life of man, it demonstrates
that this control is not restrictive, but expansive,
leading to a fuller, freer sense of being. Mere
suppression does not heal either in individual
consciousness or in world thought; but a right
apprehension of the spiritual nature of man supersedes
old beliefs with brighter, grander views of spiritual
substance and joy. The omnipotence of Truth is made
manifest through understanding which turns us from
"the old man" with no sense of loss. Divine Love is the
only impelling power, and the real man is governed by
infinite Life, Truth, and Love.
Through the faithful study of the Bible and the Christian
Science textbook, we come to know the healing
presence of Christ and to feel God's tender care. In
times of trial and temptation the ideas gained from
these books come to us as ministering angels, as
healing messengers. In the words of the Psalmist:
"Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge,
even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil
befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy
dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee,
to keep thee in all thy ways."

May 1 – Delay Is Not Denial
https://everyoneslife.wordpress.com/tag/divine-control/
Read the lessons of Divine control in Nature’s laws.
Nature is but the expression of Eternal Thought in Time.
Study the outward form – grasp the Eternal Thought,
and if you can read the thoughts of the Father, then
indeed you know Him.
Leave Me out of nothing. Love all My ways with you.
Know indeed that “All is well.” Delay is but the
wonderful and all-loving restraint of your Father – not
reluctance, not desire to deny – but the Divine control
of a Father who can scarcely brook the delay.
Delay has to be – sometimes. Your lives are so linked
up with those of others, so bound by circumstances
that to let your desire have instant fulfillment might in
many cases cause another, as earnest prayer, to go
unanswered.
But think for a moment of the Love and thoughtful care
that seek to harmonize and reconcile all your desires
and longings and prayers.
Delay is not denial – not even withholding. It is the
opportunity for God to work out your problems and
accomplish your desires in the most wonderful way
possible for you.
Oh! children, trust Me. Remember that your Maker is
also your Servant, quick to fulfill, quick to achieve,
faithful in accomplishment. Yes. All is well.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my
ways higher than
your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
