PDF Class 12th Exp2

The experiment aims to prepare crystals of Mohr's salt (FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O) using ferrous sulfate and ammonium sulfate with dilute sulfuric acid. The procedure involves dissolving the chemicals, filtering the solution, and inducing crystallization to obtain bluish green crystals. The final product is pure and dry crystals of Mohr's salt ready for inspection.

Experiment -2

Aim of the experiment-

To prepare the crystals of Mohr's salt FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O (Ferrous ammonium Sulphate)

APPARATUS REQUIRED:-
(i) 250ml of Beaker
(ii) China basin
(iii) Funnel
(iv) Filtration stand
(v) Glass rod
(vi) Wash bottle
(vii) Tripod Stand
CHEMICALS REQUIRED:-
(i) Fererrous Sulphate
(ii) Dil. Sulphuric acid
(iii) Ammonium sulphate

THEORY-
Mohr’s salt is prepared by dissolving on equimolar mixture of hydrated Ferrous Sulphate & Ammoniom sulphate
in minimum volume of water with little amount of dilute H2SO4. The resulting solution is subjected to
crystallization to give bluish green crystals of Mohr’s salt.
CHEMICAL EQUATION
FeSO4. 7H2O + (NH4)2SO4 → FeSO4. (NH4)2SO4.6H2O+H2O
(Mohr’s Salt)

PROCEDURE
 7.0 g of Ferrous sulphate & 3.5g of Ammonium Sulphate were taken in a beaker.
 2.5ml of dil. sulphuric acid was added to present hydrolysis.
 About 20ml of water was boiled in another beaker for about 5 mins to expel the dissolved air.
 This boiling water was added to the first beaker. The contents were stirred with a glass rod to dissolve the
salt completely.
 The solution was filtered to remove dry suspended impurities.
 The filtrate was takes in a clean china basin. The solution was heated till the crystallization point was
reached.
 The basin containing the saturated solution was placed over a breaker full of cold water.
 Bluish green crystals of Mohr’s salt were separated out by decanting off the mother liquor immediately
 The crystals were washed in the basin with a small amount of water.
 The crystals were dried within the folds of filter paper.
 The pure & dry crystals were collected.

CONCIUSION:-
The pure and dry crystals were submitted for inspection.
