India and the World

Introduction

India, as the world’s largest democracy and a rapidly growing economy, plays a crucial role
in global affairs. Its foreign policy is shaped by historical experiences, geopolitical realities,
and economic aspirations. Over the years, India has strengthened its position on the world
stage by engaging in diplomatic, economic, and strategic partnerships. This essay explores
India’s international relations, its role in global organisations, and its interactions with major
countries.

India’s Foreign Policy

India’s foreign policy is based on the principles of Panchsheel, non-alignment, and strategic
autonomy. The country seeks peaceful coexistence, economic growth, and regional stability
while maintaining its sovereignty. India follows a multi-alignment strategy, engaging with
various global powers without being dependent on any single nation.

India and Global Organisations

India is an active participant in international organisations, contributing to global governance

and policy-making:

• United Nations (UN): India has been a key member since 1945 and has consistently
advocated for UN reforms, including a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.

• World Trade Organisation (WTO): India plays a major role in global trade negotiations,
focusing on fair trade policies for developing nations.

• G20 and BRICS: India is a significant player in the G20 and BRICS, where it collaborates
with major economies to address global challenges such as climate change and economic
crises.

• Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO): India joined SCO to strengthen its ties with
Central Asian countries and improve regional security.
India’s Relations with Major Countries

India maintains strong diplomatic relations with several global powers:

• United States: India and the U.S. share strategic ties in defence, trade, and technology. The
two nations cooperate on counterterrorism and Indo-Pacific security.

• Russia: India has a historical defence partnership with Russia, importing military equipment
and collaborating on space and energy projects.

• China: Despite border tensions, India and China engage in economic and diplomatic
dialogues to maintain regional stability.

• European Union: India has strong trade relations with the EU, focusing on investment,
technology, and climate change initiatives.

• Neighbourhood Policy: India follows the “Neighbourhood First” policy to strengthen ties
with its South Asian neighbours, including Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, through trade,
infrastructure, and security cooperation.

Economic and Strategic Interests

India’s global engagement is driven by its economic and strategic interests. It seeks foreign
investments, technological advancements, and energy security. The Make in India and Act
East Policy initiatives aim to enhance economic partnerships with Southeast Asia and other
regions.
