Fail and Retake

There may be discrepancies and subjected to changes.

• Fail a subject if: • Subject grade: A+ ~ D = Pass; F = Fail

• Fail in either the continuous assessment or • Passed subject ➔ CANNOT retake

final exam ➔ Fail
• Absent in Final Exam without legitimate • Failed compulsory subjects ➔ Must RETAKE
reason ➔ Fail the same subject
• Late for more than 30 minutes for final exam • Maximum number of retakes of the same

deregistration from PolyU
• Fail or Absent from exam:
• No re-examination or make-up exam. Retake
next year.
• Absent from exam:
• Late examination (called “late assessment” at
PolyU) is only granted under exceptional cases,
decided by the Subject Assessment Review
Panel (not your subject lecturer)

Grade Point Average (GPA)

There may be discrepancies and subjected to changes.

When we talk about GPA, it usually refers to cumulative GPA

𝐺𝑃𝐴 =
σ𝑁𝑛=1 𝑆𝑢𝑏𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝐶𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑡 𝑉𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑛

Grade Point
N = number of all subjects (inclusive of failed subjects)
taken by a student up to and including the latest semester/term.

The following subjects will be excluded from the GPA calculation:

1. exempted subjects;
2. ungraded subjects (pass/ fail type);
3. incomplete subjects;
4. subjects for which credit transfer has been approved, but without any grade
assigned; and
5. subjects from which a student has been allowed to withdraw (i.e. those with the
code ‘W’).
