INTRODUCTION

1 General

1.1 This procedure outlines a framework for evaluating and validating zero ozone emissions claims for
air cleaner products by performing the ozone test on product during use phase.

Document Was Downloaded By KY Liew For Use By Analytical Laboratories (S) Pte Ltd Liew, KY : 6/1/2021 - 5:48 AM
1.2 Products that qualify for Zero Ozone Emissions must demonstrate that the amount of ozone being
generated during use phase is below the maximum concentration limit for ozone – 0.005 ppm.

2 Scope

2.1 This procedure covers air cleaners which potentially generate ozone, are rated at 600 volts or less,
are intended to remove or aid removal of dust, other particles or pollutants from the air and are intended
for use in accordance with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70.

3 Undated References

3.1 Any undated reference to a code or standard appearing in the requirements of this procedure shall
be interpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard.

4 Glossary

4.1 For the purpose of this procedure, the following definitions apply.

4.2 AIR CLEANERS – A product intended to remove or aid removal of dust and other particles from the
air. An air cleaner is defined as one of the following (Standard for Electrostatic Air Cleaners, UL 867):

a) DUCT TYPE – A fixed or stationary type air cleaner intended for installation in and at adjoining
ducts of heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems. The air cleaner is not provided with a
fan, and the duct may provide part or all of the overall enclosure.

b) FIXED TYPE – A self-contained or duct type air cleaner intended to be permanently connected
electrically.

c) PORTABLE TYPE – A cord-and-plug-connected, self-contained type air cleaner that:

1) Can be easily moved from one place to another for use; and

2) Has no provision for permanent mounting.

d) SELF-CONTAINED TYPE – A fixed, portable, or stationary type air cleaner that includes all parts
necessary for its intended operation, including active cell, fan, and the overall enclosure.

e) STATIONARY TYPE – A cord-and-plug-connected, self-contained or duct type air cleaner that is

constructed to be fastened in place or located in a dedicated space.

Two examples of air cleaners are electrostatic air cleaner and electronic air purifier. The complete
electrostatic air cleaner consists of an assembly of a power pack, controls, ionizer-collector cell, and other
components (UL 867). The complete electronic air purifier consists of an assembly of an electronic, non-
ionizing, power source with controls, energy emission grids to accelerate particulate, and a specified filter
for collection and disposal of particulate.

COMPLIANCE, EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

5 Procedure

5.1 The manufacturer shall submit the requested documentation necessary for verifying the proposed
Zero Ozone Emissions claim. For more information regarding required documentation, see Section 8,

Document Was Downloaded By KY Liew For Use By Analytical Laboratories (S) Pte Ltd Liew, KY : 6/1/2021 - 5:48 AM
Information Required.

5.2 The product, at the highest setting, shall undergo Ozone Test as described by the Standard for
Electrostatic Air Cleaners, UL 867, Section 40 or an equivalent ozone test.

5.3 As part of an annual review, the manufacturer must complete a Zero Ozone Emissions ECV Annual
Review Declaration and return it to the designated compliance manager along with any requested
documentation to confirm on-going compliance with the zero ozone emissions environmental claim.

6 Test and Maximum Concentration Limit

6.1 Products should be tested during use phase according to the Standard for Electrostatic Air Cleaners,
UL 867, Section 40 which establishes the amount of ozone being emitted expressed as ppm.

6.2 Zero Ozone Emissions – The maximum concentration limit is established as 0.005 ppm ozone.

7 Example Claim

7.1 Always check US FTC Green Guides (or other applicable governing bodies) for guidance on
environmental claim wording.

7.2 Table 7.1 below shows acceptable claim wording.

Table 7.1
Acceptable Claim Wording

Zero Ozone Emissions – Measured Ozone Emissions from [Product Name] during use phase does not
exceed 0.005 ppm as tested by UL 867.

7.3 Methodology includes desktop audit and validation of documents, review of product specification
sheet, and test reports.

8 Information Required

8.1 Table 8.1 below describes the information required to validate environmental claims.
