Quick Go Strategy Guide
Opening (Fuseki)
- Start in the corners, then expand to sides.
- Avoid playing too close to strong stones (overconcentration).
- Play high moves for influence, low moves for territory.
- Balance framework-building with responding to approaches.
Midgame (Chuban)
- Attack weak groups, but don’t overplay.
- Play lightly—don't overdefend or create heavy shapes.
- Use forcing moves (sente) to keep the initiative.
- If behind, look for opportunities to invade or reduce.
Endgame (Yose)
- Count! Decide whether you need to play safe or risky.
- Play big sente moves before small gote ones.
- Don’t waste moves filling neutral points too early.
- Estimate point value: aim to play the biggest moves first.
General Advice
- Always consider whole-board balance before making a local move.
- Sacrifice a few stones if it brings greater profit elsewhere.
- Review your own games—mistakes are your best teacher.
- Play with intent: ask yourself, 'What am I trying to accomplish?'
