pushes wax deeper into the ear, rather than removing it that cause temporary hearing loss and
ear pain.
b. Swimmer’s Ear- is also known as otitis externa; an infection in the outer ear canal. It is
often brought on by water that remains in your ear after swimming, creating a moist environment
that aids bacterial growth. It is an infection that is usually caused by a fungus or a virus
commonly found in water and soil.
c. Otitis Media- is an inflammation in the middle ear. It can occur as a result of a cold,
sore throat, or respiratory infection. An ear infection is most often caused by a bacteria or virus
that affects the middle ear. Children are more likely than adults to get ear infections.

the cornea (the clear front cover of the eye) is irregularly shaped or sometimes because of the
curvature of the lens inside the eye. This can be corrected by eyeglasses.
b. Myopia (near-sightedness)- is a vision condition in which close objects are seen clearly,
but objects farther away appear blurred.
c. Hyperopia (far-sightedness) - is a vision condition in which distant objects can be seen
clearly, but close ones do not come into proper focus. This is caused by eye fatigue from
computer use.

4. Skin, Hair and Nail

2
a. Sunburn- red, painful skin that feels hot to the touch — usually appears within a few
hours after too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from sunshine or artificial sources, such
as sunlamps. Sunburn may take several days or longer to fade.
b. Dandruff- is a common chronic scalp condition marked by flaking of the skin on your
scalp. Dandruff isn't contagious or serious, but it can be embarrassing and sometimes difficult to
treat.
c. Corns and calluses- are thick, hardened layers of skin that develop when your skin tries
to protect itself against friction and pressure from repetitive actions cause them to develop and
grow. They most often develop on the feet and toes or hands and fingers.

into the soft flesh. The result is pain, redness, swelling and, sometimes, an infection. It usually
affect the big toe.

b. Lordosis-is a condition when the spine in the lower back has curved excessively that
causes pain.

a. Cavities- are permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of your teeth that
develop into tiny openings or holes. They are also called tooth decay or caries caused by
bacteria in your mouth, frequent snacking, sipping sugary drinks and not cleaning your teeth
well.

and swelling of the part of your gum around the base of your teeth. It's important to take
gingivitis seriously and treat it promptly. It can lead to much more serious gum disease called
periodontitis and tooth loss.

among the causes of bad breath. It can be prevented by proper tooth brushing.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR THE TEACHER

Health Appraisal is an assessment that gives current information of pupil’s health status
to cater appropriate health care and activities or programs suited for him. It can also give
information to the teacher if modification on school activities is needed so the child could
benefit from it.
The school should advise the parents to let their children undergo regular health
examinations to determine child’s capabilities to participate in school activities. It can also
provide the chance to give counsel to the child with health problems, closed medical
supervision, and offer a positive health experience to him. There are components in the school
health appraisal namely:
Health history-this includes your records on your previous immunizations, allergies, childhood
illnesses and medications, former injuries and hospitalization.
Family History- this contains the age and general health of parents and siblings, parents’
educational level, family disease history and physical environment.

Screening Procedures- are supplemental evaluation of vision, hearing, blood pressure, height
and weight, and any other screenings locally determined.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR THE TEACHER

A healthy child can perform better and can show his best potentials in school. He can
satisfactorily achieve his goals if he meant to. Undergoing health appraisal procedures is a great
factor to detect health-related issues that may hinder child’s participation on various school
activities. This can also help find health problems before it starts and cure them earlier, for a
longer healthier life. You may undertake some immunizations to prevent some diseases and
illnesses.
Undergoing health appraisal procedures are important as they help; to assess the child’s
development, to keep a track of immunizations, early detections of diseases/abnormalities, and
to provide special services to various cases. These include:
Urine Test – is a test that can detect some common diseases and to help diagnose urinary tract
infections, kidney disorders, liver malfunction and others.
Measurements (height and weight) – this will serve as basis for instructions to the factors
affecting the growth and maturity of a child.
Eyesight check – this done using a Snellen chart to detect students with vision problems.
Blood Pressure – the pressure exerted by the blood against the walls of blood vessels. Blood
pressure depends on the strength of the heartbeat, thickness and volume of the blood, and the
elasticity of the artery walls.
Chest X-ray – is a diagnostic tool that produces pictures. It can help see abnormalities on the
lungs, heart, bones and to other parts organs of the body.
Blood Test – scientific examination of blood for the diagnosis of illness.
Dental Examination – is for the diagnosis for the risk of dental cavities and other oral health
problems.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR THE TEACHER

Health Appraisal Procedure is a series of assessment to determine the status of a
student’s health through observations, health examinations and inspections.
Hearing Screening- this can provide early detection of hearing impairment and the
interventions needed to address the condition and lessen the child’s difficulty to learn.
Developmental Screening- the school staff may share some observations regarding the
appropriate behavioural age that is present or not in a child, his health and developmental
history, and current health status and practices. Through analysis, the school can identify if
health or developmental problems has relationship to the child’s ability to learn.
Growth Screening- height and weight measurements are simple but effective way to determine
growth abnormalities. The Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to determine appropriate height for
weight.
Vision Screening- early detections, findings, and medications of vision problems can prevent to
worsen it. This screening is important to distinguish students that need immediate attention.
Postural and Scoliosis Screening- this enable to identify early signs of spinal disorders that
require further medical check-ups. This is usually proven through X-ray of the spine.
Physical Examinations- this periodic examination is important to identify and to follow up
health condition of a child. Parental permission is also needed as well as the privacy and
confidentiality of the child’s need should be met. This is usually done to students who want to
participate in scholastic athletics.

Group 2: (Info Slogan Making) Make an information slogan to inform your community about
awareness to Scoliosis.

Scoliosis causes a sideways curve of your backbone, or spine. These curves are often S- or C-
shaped. Scoliosis is most common in late childhood and the early teens, when children grow fast. Girls
are more likely to have it than boys. It can run in families. Symptoms include leaning to one side and
having uneven shoulders and hips. Sometimes it is easy to notice, but not always.

15
Children may get screening for scoliosis at school or during a check up. If it looks like there is a
problem, your doctor will use your medical and family history, a physical exam, and imaging tests to
make a diagnosis. Treatment depends on your age, how much more you're likely to grow, how much
curving there is, and whether the curve is temporary or permanent. People with mild scoliosis might
only need check-ups to see if the curve is getting worse. Others might need to wear a brace or have
surgery.
