FORWARD

In a world riddled with chaos, moral decline, and increasing human

suffering, the need for compassionate intervention that bridges spiritual
insight with practical action has never been more urgent. Chaplaincy as a
Ministry by CSP Ezekiel Ugbotor comes at such a time—offering not just a
call to care, but a clear, Spirit-led roadmap on how to do so with
excellence, accountability, and divine purpose.

This work does more than define Chaplaincy; it breathes life into it as a
sacred vocation—an extension of Christ's earthly ministry of healing,
comfort, and reconciliation. It highlights how chaplains, whether within
the structured environment of the Police, Armed Forces, Prisons,
hospitals, schools, or the wider society, must rise beyond religion and titles
to become agents of hope and transformation to a broken world.

CSP Ugbotor writes with the heart of a shepherd and the experience of one
who has served both the badge and the Bible. He understands that
Chaplaincy is not just a spiritual duty but a social responsibility—to reach
the unreachable, love the unloved, and speak peace into the storms of life.
As a seasoned Police Officer and minister of the Gospel, his insights are
deeply practical, timely, and divinely inspired.

This book is a training manual, a soul-searcher, and a motivational guide.

It reminds us that every chaplain—especially within the Force—is not
merely called to preach, but to live the Gospel through presence,
compassion, courage, and justice.

I recommend this book to all believers, particularly those in uniformed

services, church leaders, humanitarian workers, and anyone seeking to
turn empathy into impact. May it stir within you the conviction that being a
chaplain is not a position—it is a calling.

CHAPLAINCY AS A MINISTRY.

INTRODUCTION
Many have thought ministry is only within the four walls of a sacred
Institution, the one in which they unconsciously opined that is directly
under the watchful eyes of God. How wrong.
Creation is filled with all walks of life, both living and nonliving and
humans are put in charge to administer. It is very unfortunate that the
principal manager of all the fullness of this earth is the one that is faced
with calamities that diminish, injure or incapacitate him. Imagine the earth
without a manager, tender, explorer and developer.
Man from ages is faced with challenges that most times threaten his life.
The woes are uncountable and can be sudden, while helpers may be far.
Mostly, victims of the cruel hand circumstances find their way into
religious institutions and receive empathy. The expectations of the
teeming needy is too high and numbers so many that those institutions
become overwhelmed. This leads many in the society to conclude that the
religious institutions are uncaring and ungodly.
Go to the streets of any city, move into villages and clans and you will see
hopelessness, despair, hunger everywhere. Not all of them even know that
God exists or if at all he cares about them. That accounts for the frustration
on people's faces and widespread wickedness as a result of survival
instincts.
There are people that naturally have the mind to pity those suffering in one
area or the other. They go their own way to be what the Bible refers to as
their “brother's keeper”. They offer help, encouragement and give money
as much as they can afford to alleviate the suffering of fellow humans.
There were occasions when people decided to house others temporarily till
the time, they could take care of themselves.
In Africa, especially Nigeria, our culture favours integration, community
life, compound parenting and interaction. This makes it easy to know

01
when someone is hurting, grieving, or in life threatening danger. Sharing is
a way of life and appreciation is cultivated and valued greatly. So when
people belong to a religious group they carry this care and gesture to their
fellow members and are ready to assist in times of trouble because they see
that group as a new family.
The chances are high for any vulnerable person to receive help from within
the family or from their religious group but outside this, victims of any
category are viewed as strangers. After all, “I don't know you” is the
thought and poise. There is that feeling that one has not finished solving the
problem on hand and talk less of outsiders. It is easier to identify with a
family or religious group member than someone outside the Faith.
Because God does not discriminate in his blessings and care for mankind,
he expects us to show compassion and empathy to those that are
unfortunate and hopeless. This is where Chaplaincy as a Ministry comes
in. It is to take the natural instincts of care and empathy within us and all
that we have been doing to the next level of commitment, professionalism
and accountability.
If you have found in you traits of empathy, burden, concern for the
destitutes and the homeless, if you are looking for a platform to express
your care, if you are interested in joining efforts with likeminds to render
greater help to mankind, the Ministry of Chaplaincy is for you.
It is my humble belief that this book will open the eyes of the reader to the
huge responsibility that we have to each other irrespective of religion,
faith, gender, tribe or race. It will also highlight the inherent blessings of
Chaplaincy and its place in the heart of God for humanity. It will bring
training and professionalism to the gift of God in one's life and how to
channel it to productive use.
Making Chaplaincy a ministry is practically partnering with Christ to heal
wounds and bind the brokenhearted.
It is to visit prisoners, identify with them, help them in achieving freedom
and better life and also bear people's burden.
Be blessed as you read on.

CHAPTER ONE:

THE STATE
OF THE

WORLD.
The world refers to the system operating among mankind and the entire
commerce, culture, religion, technology and moral behaviour while the
earth is the planet consisting of the ground, air, animals, humans and all
natural resources.

Humans are to populate the earth, run the system (the world) and
administer God's purposes. Whatever happens to the earth and other
creation will be required from man who is placed as the custodian of it.

In this time that we live, the Bible calls it the end time.
This time is characterized by mercilessness, violence, godless essence,
greed, betrayal, disunity and lack of trust. There is chaos in most parts of
the world and the resources of the earth are under strain. People have little
or no time for each other and suspicion is palpable all over the place.

This is not the world that the Lord desires. He loves equality,
understanding, unity, compassion, empathy and progress. God hates
oppression, intimidation and destruction.

01
In biblical terms, according to the Dictionary of Theology, page 729, the
word 'world' (Kosmos) is used in the sense of mankind. In Jn. 3:16, “For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” KJV bible.
For in this instance, we are told of God's love for “the world “in this sense.
When this is what it means, then the Christian duty to love creation
(mankind) is clear.

In the wider sense “the world “usually means “the environment of

humanity “. That is to say, it includes not only the natural environment and
all its varied resources, but also the cultural and social environment
brought into being by sinful humanity. In this sense, the devil is described
as “the Prince” or “the ruler” of this world, who was condemned and cast
out by the power and work of Christ (Jn. 12:31 “Now is the judgment of
this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out, Of judgment,
because the prince of this world is judged.

Jn 16:11. Eph. 6:12 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this
world, against spiritual wickedness in high places”. And also “The whole
world lies in the power of the wicked one” (1Jn.5:19). The above Scripture
unequivocally lets us know who runs the world system behind the scene.

With the state of the world under the rule of the wicked one, it is expected
that there will be degeneration of all good things that God put in place for
the benefit of mankind. The waters, vegetation, soil, air, mountains, trees
and the ecosystem is being destroyed on a daily basis. Wars, deliberate
chemical poisons are being released into the world by the activities of
greedy and oppressive behaviours of higher class of people. There is much
hatred and mistrust now than ever before. Individualism and self
aggrandizement is the other of the day and people care less of their
neighbors.

Wrong teachings are being propagated so as to make the people doubt the
existence of God. Teachings about salvation are being opposed on a daily
basis and Demonic doctrines are circulating like wildfire.

01
WHY DID GOD STILL LEAVE THE WORLD THE WAY IT IS
NOW?
It must interest us to know that God's intention and goal is that the whole
earth must be filled with his glory. Numbers 14:21-24: But as truly as I live,
all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD. Because all those
men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and
in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not
hearkened to my voice;Surely they shall not see the land which I sware
unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it: But my
servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed
me fully, he will I bring into the land where into he went; and his seed shall
possess it”.

God will not change his purpose because of the devil or any man. He will
rather through all things, achieve his purpose. He is God. Romans 8:27-29
“And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit,
because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God,
to them who are called according to his purpose. For whom he did
foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son,
that he might be the firstborn among many brethren”.

Jesus stated in John 17:11-15 thus: “And now I am no more in the world,
but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through
thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as
we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those
that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of
perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and
these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in
themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them,
because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not
that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep
them from the evil one”.

So we are in this world to carry out the original purpose of God, to bring
souls to him and deliver them from sin and calamities. To spread the

01
righteousness of God by the Word and by our daily conduct. To show the
practical teachings of the Lord through what we can offer or provide for the
daily lives of the vulnerable, sick, hurting, grieving and the wounded.
Luke 10:30-37 “And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down
from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of
his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw
him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at
the place, came and looked at him, and passed by on the other side. But a
certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw
him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his
wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought
him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed,
he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take
care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will
repay thee.

Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell
among the thieves?
And he said, He shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and
do thou likewise”.
We are to counter corruption and shine the light of the Gospel.

IS THERE HOPE FOR THE WORLD?

The answer is YES.
That is why we are still alive. You have to key into a situation that will
bring glory to God and perform with all your heart and your strength. Mark
12:28-31 says “And one of the scribes came, and having heard them
reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked
him, " Which is the first commandment of all?

And Jesus answered him, the first of all the commandments is, Hear, O
Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy
soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first
commandment.

01
And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these”.

In fact the ministry of Chaplaincy answers this question perfectly. When

we say that we love God, the people want to see it in the solutions we give
to the world practically, not in our preaching. Today, people are tired of
hearing “Jesus saves”, they want to see what Jesus can do through us. That
is the hope the world is waiting for and we are chosen to give that hope in
practical terms.

We should cultivate an attitude that will show to others that there is still
hope for them. John Hagee opined in his book “Life challenges, your
opportunities “page 183, that “Have you chosen a negative attitude to your
circumstances? Has it accomplished anything other than bringing you
discouragements? What good did it do to be bad-tempered today? Did
your complaining drive your problems away? Did you achieve more than
you normally do because of your pessimistic attitude? If your bad
approach toward your problem did not smooth the path to your divine
destiny, then why adopt it? Your attitude determines the outcome of most
everything in your life”.

As a result we must develop a positive mental attitude armed with the

Spirit of Faith to be able to step out of the multitude to give the world hope.
There is hope in Christ Love, practical love by us.
That is what the Ministry of Chaplaincy is set out to achieve.

CHAPTER TWO

THE CRY OF MANKIND;

THE ESSENCE OF

CHAPLAINCY.
The agony associated with the experiences of life is a burden to many. This
varies across races, nations, tribes and families but all the same in outcome
i.e. despair. Whether one is religious or not, born again or Clergy, none is
immune from the unpleasant events of life in certain levels of impact.

The same government rules over all in different nations. Their policy
affects all, whether good or bad. Some nations are in perpetual poverty
because of the policy of its leaders.
The cry of mankind can emanate due to the factors mentioned below:

1. Hunger.
This is the major cry of most citizens of all nations. Many are groaning
under critical life situations affected by illness that can be of any origin.
Some sicknesses are nutritional, when there is no proper feeding, little or
no food at all. Nowadays, the majority of low income earners cannot feed
themselves, talk less of their family. Kwashiorkor and protein deficiency is
a precursor to a number of diseases.

People need daily survival ration and cannot get it. Some nations cannot

01
grow their food and have to import basic foods. This leads to an unbearable
price hike that leaves the poor people vulnerable and without hope.
According to a 2024 report by an Organisation called “Concern Group”
research shows that one out of five people is hungry every day. 2.8 billion
of the world population is lacking food. That amounts to 35% of the world
population. Half of all child deaths all over the world are linked to food
crises especially in third world countries. 42 countries ranked as serious or
alarming in the hunger crisis.

9m people, mainly children under 5 years old, are at the risk of dying each
year. In low income countries 75% of their population cannot afford a
balanced diet. The number of people needing food is growing every year
and the situation is getting worse. Now, everyone is managing their family
and little is left to help others. The situation is making people to be short of
mercy and compassion. The United Nations World Food Programme is the
largest food donor in the world. Religious organisations like FCMC and
the Catholic Church also offer humanitarian food services to the hungry all
over the world. The United States Chaplain Organisation, Africa also
meets the needs of the hungry and prisoners.
The Ministry of Chaplaincy is a very strategic organisation in this regard.

2. Burdens of sickness and afflictions.

The groaning of many poor people under the yoke of needless sicknesses
and afflictions is visibly heard at all levels of the populations all over the
world. The effects of sicknesses and diseases on humanity in recent times
is colossal. The amount of money needed to purchase pharmaceutical
drugs is out of the reach of many poor and average families. Many have
resulted in unverified local concussions that have complicated their
problems. Some pregnant women lack money for antenatal care and
sometimes death arises from complicated childbirth due to prolonged
labour. Chaplaincy as a Ministry can be targeted towards this cause. The
need is endless.

3. Political and Economic Failure

The cause of many troubles in nations of the world is political and

01
economic failure. There is a great interrelationship between the political
and economic system of any nation. This is because politics serves the
economy of a nation and the economy funds the political system.

When bad leaders arise in the political space of a nation, they will squander
the economy. This is rampant in Africa leading to great underdevelopment
and wastage of resources. This in turn will bear negatively on the poor in
direct proportion.

Political failures can lead to protest, arson and suspicion and fighting. In all
these, the economic activities can be disrupted and make trading
impossible Proverbs 29:2-8 When the righteous are in authority, the
people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.
Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company
with harlots spends his substance.

Prov. 29 :2-5 “The king by judgment establishes the land: but he that
receiveth gifts overthrow with it.
A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet.
In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth
sing and rejoice. The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the
wicked regardeth not to know it. Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but
wise men turn away”.

The problems of African nations are well described above by King

Solomon. The Ministry of Chaplaincy if channeled towards good
governance can offer a lot of benefits.

4. Parental Failure and Breakdown of Educational Institutions.

Parental care is being negatively affected in modern days because of
challenges of work schedule and lack of quality and practical educational
curricula. It is often said that “charity begins at home”.

Because both parents have to be engaged in meaningful work to be able to

maintain the home, many parents spend long hours outside and sometimes

01
may not come home at all for days. In this situation, the children will lack
guidance, discipline and training necessary for growth and their future.

Today, many parents are crying and regretting what their children have
turned into. The educational institutions also have been relieved of the
authority to discipline children properly. There is no more fear in the life of
pupils and students. Many students turned out to be cult members or
Internet fraudsters. Education is no longer attractive because there are few
or no jobs for fresh graduates. Many parents, teachers and students need
Spiritual guidance and counselling and Chaplaincy is best in this regard.

5. Religious burdens.
We are in the days of false Prophets, self styled Apostles and countless fake
Pastors. False teachers and unclassified Evangelists have taken the
evangelical space, even those who because of the talent of singing have
turned themselves to branded Evangelists. Many gullible worshipers have
been deceived, defrauded, seduced, sexually abused or sometimes used for
rituals. Many Pastors are now using voodoo and dangerous charms to
hypnotise innocent, ignorant seekers of Spiritual help.

In fact, it is almost difficult now for those who are not grounded in the word
of God to be able to differentiate between genuine and fake Pastors. To
make matters worse, no one is regulating anybody.

Genuine seekers are left to their fate. Chaplaincy can do a lot to expose this
evil and rescue the perishing, going for them where they are without
waiting for them to come to Church. Meeting them in workplaces, market
places, hospitals, prisons, rehabilitation centres and schools etc. These
fake ministers impose financial requests on gullible victims and turn them
to traditional practices that are occultism in nature without any basis in the
Bible.

01
CHAPTER THREE

MINISTRY
BEYOND THE

SANCTUARY.
This is the core of Chaplaincy and the extension of the love of God
to the hurting world. It is the expression of charity, the reaching out
of what Christ represented by daily sacrifice that humans can touch.
It is like carrying the Torch of Liberty with its blazing light piercing
through the dark space to lighten those that are in darkness and
bound with the chains of despair.

The Lord does not expect us to be mere Preachers alone, but

matching our preaching with action. Romans 8:19-23 states that
“For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the
manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made
subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath
subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall
be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty
of the children of God.

For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain
together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have
the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within

01
ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our
body”. The world outside the confines of Sanctuary is waiting for us
outside to see what we are bringing. Empty stomachs will not allow
to hear what is being said, except it is appeased with food.

Traditional religion is acceptable partly because of the endless

sacrifices that indirectly feed the attendees. Wherever people's
needs are met, they tend to gravitate towards such areas.
Immediately events that minister to the immediate needs of the
people, they will flock to the source of the provision. When they
notice that it is a group of people that are meeting their needs, they
are likely to pledge their allegiance to such an area. God's grace is
to produce results that will glorify his name.

Matthew 25:31-46. “When the Son of man shall come in his glory,
and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of
his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall
separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep
from the goats:And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the
goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right
hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared
for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and
ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a
stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick,
and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we
thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and
clothed thee?

Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

And the king shall say unto them, Verily I say unto you In as much as

01
ye have done it unto one of the least of my brethren ye have done it unto
me.

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, depart from me ye cursed
into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was an
hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I
was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick,
and in prison, and ye visited me not.
Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an
hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not
minister unto thee?

Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, In as much as ye
did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous
into life eternal.

The variable aspects of God's saving grace are made known, not in
conventional arts of preaching or teaching alone, but by conveying the
eternal message of God through good and profitable acts. This will make
people hear God, not by the hearing of the ear but by the gentle touch of
Christ through what is given them to enjoy. It speaks louder than voice as it
is often said that “actions speak louder than voice”.

Below are the various ways that this can happen;

a . Relief strategies after physical disasters.
When disaster happens, it does not discriminate in its destruction and the
effects it produces. The Chaplaincy is better poised to mobilise support by
volunteering resources towards Relief. This will put immediate smiles on
the displaced people and give hope that they are not alone in their fate.

b . Community clean ups.

This can be done by gathering willing workers to clean motor parks,
recreation centers, streets, gutters and other public infrastructure to restore
dignity of the environment

01
c . Community outreach events.
Food banks and pastries, clothing clusters, and health points can be
initiated. This is to act as support bases for meals and groceries for the
hungry. In the community, shelters for the destitutes can be facilitated in
collaboration with local government departments.
After school programs in tutoring, mentoring and personal growth with
job training can be established. Employment services to assist in getting
jobs, with workshops and training services can be provided.

d . Collaboration with government and private school owners. This is by

facilitating educational initiatives and guest speakers to enhance the drive
of students to excellence. Advocacy for good education and practical
curriculum policies that impact directly solving poverty problems. This
will in turn solve inequality issues and the resulting social vices like
thuggery, miscreants and riots.

e . Support for refugees and immigrants by assisting in culture

adaptation, language training, integration into the new society and taste.
The provision of legal assistance and resources also can help the refugees
if their status demands such to properly integrate.

f . Seasonal events
Joyful events of celebrations can be hosted during holidays e.g Christmas,
New year, Thanksgiving days, special days and landmarks. Gifts during
this period can have a lot of positive influence.

g . Health Clinics
Because of the prohibitive costs of drugs and cost of treatments, shift
health clinics can be constructed to assist the sick. Free health services,
vaccination, screening and basic medical care can be hosted for the
vulnerable and the poor.

h . Special people
Companionship services can be organised for those prone to abandonment
and rejection due to their condition. Transportation services can be

01
facilitated for those that are poor or weak to go out alone. This includes
senior citizens, widows and orphans. Rehabilitation centres can also be
empowered to function better through collaboration.

01
CHAPTER FOUR

CHAPLAINCY
AS

MINISTRY.
A . What is the Ministry?
Ministry in simple terms is a service or function that a person is applying
his time, resources and acquired training for.

According to the Dictionary of Oxford languages it can be called a

profession. It is the action of doing service or work for someone. Service is
an action of helping someone do a task.

According to the way.org.uk, the Theology of Ministry is the

understanding of our calling, the programs and the relationships that arise
out of a profound vision of who God is, his character and his purposes.

Whatever we claim that God is leading us to do must not be in conflict with

his will. It must be guided by the inner conviction that one is being led by
his Spirit and that he is the author of that intention, methods and execution.
Ephesians 2:1-10, And you hath he quickened, who were dead in
trespasses and sins;

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world,

01
according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh
in the children of disobedience:
Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of
our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by
nature the children of wrath, even as others.

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ,
(by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit
together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he
might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us
through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not
of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained
that we should walk in them. Here, the Scripture traces our journey from
darkness to light, and to see the hope of our calling as God's workmanship,
created for good works (acceptable service, fruitful ministry).

This means that the gift of salvation that is received must produce service,
actions, works or ministry that will be the practical testimony of divine
investments. It is the evidence that there was an encounter with the Lord.
John 6:57. “As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the father: so he
that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

Anyone that has an encounter with the Lord is bound to live by him. This is
God's template of service viz; Theology of Ministry.

In Ministry, according to https://www.the way.org,UK (pdf) the

components of Ministry are Calling, Character, Competence and
Chemistry (C4). These four are the basic theological foundations of the
Ministry.

1 . Calling.
This is the basis of Christian existence and furthermore the expression

01
thereof. The Bible is filled with records of people that were called at one
time or the other. It is the primary link of the human with the divine. That is
when there is a deep conviction and instruction from God is
communicated to man, who responds and moves in the direction he is told
to go. The calling of God confers a great responsibility on the called
because when there is a call there will be a mandate and the means to
achieve it. Romans 8:26-30. “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our
infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the
Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be
uttered.

And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit,
because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God,
to them who are called according to his purpose.

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the

image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Moreover whom he did predestinate, whom he also called: and whom he
called, whom he also justified: and whom he justified, whom he also
glorified”.

A man is known from eternity before he is called. No one is called by

accident or by his own will. He, who owns the work, knows whom he will
tell to what and what, how and when. God told Jeremiah Jer.1:4-7, 10
“Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee
in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I
sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. But
the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I
shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.See, I
have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out,
and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant”.
So, to be in the Ministry is to have been called, for without this, there will

01
be no basis for venture. Hebrews 5:4-6. “And no man taketh this honour
unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. So also Christ
glorified not himself to be made a high priest; but he that said unto him,
Thou art my Son, today have I begotten thee.
As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest forever after the order of
Melchisedec”.

2 . Character.
Character is the sum total of features and traits that form the individual
nature of some person or thing. This consists of the Spiritual, moral and
ethical traits visible. The features and traits that make an acceptable
character for calling to be successful must be impeccable. Philippians
2:12-16.“Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my
presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own
salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both
to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Do all things without murmurings and disputings:

That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke,
in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as
lights in the world;Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the
day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain”.

Good character will not only validate calling but will also portray God as
altogether trustworthy to change lives and people will be willing to submit
their lives to him. In fact bad and unwholesome character is antithetical to
ministry. It destroys people's trust in the person and blocks them from
putting their trust and confidence in whatever the minister has to offer. If
one suffers because of good character, it has a way of showing the glory of
God in the midst of a perverse generation. Peter 3:15-18 “But sanctify the
Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every
man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and
fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of
evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good
conversation in Christ.

01
For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for
evil doing. For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the
unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but
quickened by the Spirit:”

The tests and trials we face should not be allowed to deny one's character
because according to John Hagee in his book, “Life challenges - Your
opportunities” pg. 35, he wrote that God also uses problems to test our
character. Within the pages of the word of God we find a purpose for
everything under the sun, even tests”. So those dangerous tests and fury
trials should rather shape our character but not allow us to spoil it.
Deuteronomy 30:19-20, “I call heaven and earth to record this day against
you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing:
therefore, choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his
voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the
length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD
sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them”.
The good news is that good and impeccable character attracts God's
blessings.

c . Competence.
In general terms this is the state of having sufficient knowledge, skill and
ability to do a task conveniently and produce good results. For a variety of
duties, it may vary in meaning but the crux is that it is key to efficiency. It
means capableness or ability. The ability to function effectively as per
given area consistently is Competence.

In the Ministry, Competence is synonymous to skill and thorough

furnishings. The competency in Ministry is derived from the word of God
and the infilling of the Holy Spirit and His directives. 2 Timothy 3:14-17.
“But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been
assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able

01
to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine,
for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good
works”.

Competency in the Ministry is brought about as it were by learning,

obedience, fruit of the Spirit and practical application of the Word and
theological tools applicable to the Ministry. It is acquired by sound
Discipleship, mentoring, adversities, necessities and pursuance of
morality. A Minister that had not been tested till he passed through
challenging circumstances and overcame. 2 Timothy 3:14-17. “But
continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured
of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou
hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto
salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

4 . Chemistry.
This is Consecration.
The Consecration of a Minister will determine his Chemistry. A person
called into a service must have the right spiritual Chemistry, dedication,
drive and hope. What he has in the inside of his Spirit, yearnings of the soul
and daily meditation and practice, being synchronised by the indwelling
Spirit of the living God will be the totality of his chemistry. This is the
balance and the stability that will sustain him in the Ministry when times of
trouble come.

Faulty balance leads to weakness, frustrations, loss of focus and drawing

back from the initial vision. “Habakkuk 2:1-4 I will stand upon my watch,
and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me,
and what I shall answer when I am reproved. And the LORD answered me,
and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run
that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it
shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely
come, it will not tarry.

01
Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall
live by his faith”. A Minister without the right chemistry cannot run with
the vision. He is soon discouraged, disenchanted and disconnected from
the source.

B. CHAPLAINCY.
Definition: Chaplaincy is a specialised Ministry outside the normal setting
of a Church. Though it can still find its place in the sanctuary, the service is
mainly wherever people are found outside the four walls of a temple. It is
still within an institutional setting but not to a congregation. The Chaplain
ministers to the people outside the church, that is, to the world at large. The
Chaplaincy is the body of Ministers who take care of the Spiritual needs of
seekers who because of their placement in life due to certain varied factors
will not find themselves in a Church setting, yet they need the service of
Priests. The service of a Chaplain is always non Ministry in style, yet under
an institution. Chaplaincy is meeting people where they are to offer them
spiritual services and support. Chaplaincy is to offer listening ears, sound,
practical, gentle support, timely, worthwhile counselling and to share in
the struggles of those being ministered unto.

Chaplains can be described as tent makers because they engage in jobs

under institutions or organisations while yet offer Pastoral services to the
outside world, exactly wherever they find the people. They offer spiritual
services to those who under normal circumstances will not want to come to
Church nor meet a Clergy.

Chaplaincy bridges the gap between the destitutes, the forsaken in the
society, the forgotten and those ordinarily people believe should be left to
suffer for their actions and God. The work is in the cold, desert, prisons,
Correctional centers, hospitals, market places, educational institutions,
diplomatic circles, government institutions like the army, police,
immigration, commissions, rehabilitation centers, palaces, government
houses, government ministers and parastatals, nursing homes, traditional
homes, sports formations, airports, seaports, and many more.

01
Chaplaincy is not to “sermonize” or to strictly convert to a particular faith.
It is to minister to the needs of the recipient while allowing them to
experience the gentle and indiscriminate but all encompassing love of God
which he prepared beforehand for the righteous and the wicked. Matthew
5:42-48 “Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of
thee turn not thou away. Ye have heard that it hath been said, thou shalt love
thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your
enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray
for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be
the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise
on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the
publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more
than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as
your Father which is in heaven is perfect”. Chaplaincy teaches to love all,
regardless of their faith, culture, creed or race. It is the practical umbrella
of God's love over all. “Luke 10:30-36” gives an apt story thus; “And
Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho,
and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded
him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down
a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other
side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked at
him, and passed by on the other side.

But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he

saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his
wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought
him to an inn, and took care of him.And on the morrow when he departed,
he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take
care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will
repay thee.

Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell
among the thieves?”.

01
The Samaritan here is an example of the love of God in practical
demonstration. The Priest and the Levite passed the wounded man
because they were compelled by the work of the Sanctuary, so much so
today, a regular Pastor may not fit in as a Chaplain except he took it as a
Ministry the way he handles his clergy duties in the Sanctuary. The work of
Chaplaincy is demanding, sacrificial and rugged. On the other hand,
chaplaincy refers to the Chapel, facility or department where chaplains
carry out their work. This is in a sense where the temple is referred to as a
Church instead of the worshippers. There he carries out his religious duties
as structured by the organisation that employed him being guided by its
tenets.

CHAPLAINCY AS A MINISTRY.
Ministry being defined simply as a type of specific vocation (religious,
carrier, secular) that one has set his time to do with total commitment,
Chaplaincy can be a full ministry. It means the Chaplain has identified his
calling into ministry outside regular Church setting unto the streets where
the destitutes, wounded, drug addicts, prostitutes, Correctional homes and
so on, can be located or found. The primary calling in this regard is not to
minister to the congregation but a selected unchurched or unchurchable
group of people wherever they are. It is to give Pastoral care, offer spiritual
support and provide moral guidance to needy families no matter what faith
or philosophy they have. Such a Chaplain must be a professional, trained
and qualified to render such care. It is not just for any untrained or morally
questionable fellow, who is out to see Pastoral care as an avenue to make
money or prey on victims.

In the Ministry, weapons are not allowed and Chaplaincy is not an

exception. Even though part of the training of a Chaplain involves
paramilitary nuances, weapon carrying is excluded. 2 Corinthians 10:3-6
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the
weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the
pulling down of strong holds;)

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself

01
against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to
the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to avenge all
disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled”. So the Chaplain does not
fight but brings peace, hope and assurance through his counselling. In
chaplain ministry, there is no room for judgemental approach to any issue,
and listening should be without bias.

According to Grace Tien, Nov. 2021, chaplaincy is the natural home for
conventional pluralism, that is being able to serve in an environment of
multiple faith settings. It involves ministering to people outside their faith
traditions. While conventional ministers to a homogeneous, regionalised
religious body or tradition, model chaplaincy is ministering to a
heterogeneous group without bias.

The conventional Church system is “come to me" style, while modelling

chaplaincy is “ I come to you” style, be it schools, universities, airports,
prisons, hospitals, Correctional centers, military formations, police
stations and so on. Grace Tien goes further to say that “chaplaincy, by its
functions, requires engagements across differences. “The Chaplain must
maintain a delicate balance between caring for people in a way they can
understand and respect their differences in the background” - Grace Tien.

01
CHAPTER FIVE

TYPES
OF

CHAPLAINCY.
Below among many are the common types of Chaplaincy.
1 . Corporate.
This is Chaplaincy in various work establishments basically to minister to
the workforce. It is created to provide Spiritual dependent care for the
employees regardless of their culture, traditions or religious inclinations.
According to the Spiritual Care Foundation, this chaplaincy provides
spiritual care and guidance to the workers', their families, work life stress
conditions, coworker relationship and career) matters. On the other hand it
helps in giving counselling to the employers in terms of layoffs, transfers,
conflict resolution, ethical issues, changes in the organisation and other
issues bothering on the health of the organisation. This type of Chaplaincy
requires comprehensive training for the officers either within or outside
the organisation.

2 . Healthcare.
This department is about chaplains serving in hospitals, hospices or home
cares. They produce spiritual and Pastoral care to the patients as well as
health care. The Chaplain in this setting can be on full time employment or
on a volunteering basis. If it is the former, there will be an established

01
routine of service and all the rules of engagement must be adhered to as
other workers. In the future, the volunteer Chaplain will need permission
from the healthcare institution to function and must subject himself to
every guidelines stated for operation. He must keep to the day and time
allotted him to offer his service. When he will not be available, he must
give adequate notice, For the volunteer, the rules may be tedious and
scrutinising because healthcare institutions are very meticulous because
of disease prevention and control. There must be a good understanding
between the organisation that sent the volunteer Chaplain there and the
healthcare institution.

The Chaplain must be able to give spiritual and Pastoral care to the patients
without forcing or coercing them into their own faith. The belief and
culture as well as other peculiarities of the patients must be taken into
consideration and any infringement against their decisions must be
avoided. The healthcare Chaplain must have the ability to communicate
effectively with the patient and family and must be an active listener.
Words or opinions should not be forced into the life of the patients.
Spiritual health care can reduce fear and anxiety during treatment and
recuperation. Pastoral care given by Chaplains can douse tension and fear
of death in the life of the patients suffering chronic illness.

3 . Police.
This is Chaplaincy in or to the law enforcement agencies. The one in the
police force is the one on the employment and payroll of the force and the
one to the agency is the volunteer Chaplains. The two can work
collaboratively and synergistically to produce desirable services within
the police force. The police chaplains provide Spiritual, emotional, moral,
physical and financial support to the force personnel, their families and the
community. Sometimes, the police chaplaincy may be of a specific
religious denomination, its services cut across all the denominations
within the force and other non religious groups therein. The police
chaplaincy is such that everyone within the force community can seek help
in any area of their life without segregation. Police chaplaincy is also

01
designed to provide robust police/community engagement where they are
located or designed to serve. They can initiate healthy relationships with
the public community stakeholders without jeopardising their code of
conduct. Police chaplains are useful in solving problems as in the cases of
suicide prevention, traffic orderliness in severe cases and critical incidents
in the time of disaster.

The support police chaplains can offer can be non religious. The religious
support can be by the request of the needy in the area of healing, guiding,
settling disputes or nurturing persons, e.g. police orphans.
Police chaplains can also provide support of counselling and referrals to
health facility services and also to other faith leaders, as in the case of
mental illness or need for prayer of deliverance. This must be done with
utmost confidentiality.

For the wellness of officers, chaplains can provide support for specific
needs within the agency. These include:
1 . In case of an officer's death, funerals can be conducted perfectly by
the Force Chaplain.
2 . Counselling the family of the bereaved and restoration of hope.
3 . Assisting the family to facilitate the process of gratuities and other
entitlements and making sure it goes to the right hand.
4 . Guiding and counselling the family, especially the children of the
deceased that are still young and schooling.
5 . Showing interest in the life of widow and Widower that was left
behind to pick up new changes that came about as a result of the loss,
through consistent prayer, counselling and care.
6 . In incidents of traumatic nature like accidents and injury on or off
duty, chaplains offer emotional and stress management help and
serve as a ready support system in terms of helping in chores and
family responsibilities that the injured is incapable of doing
presently.

According to the International Associations of Chiefs of Chiefs of

Police(THERAPY.org) wwwtheiacp.org/OSW the roles of the Chaplains

01
within an agency includes:
1 . Identifying resources to help the officer to manage stress and
vicarious trauma by inculcating programs of wellness and
spirituality in their daily routine.
2 . Visiting officers when sick or hurt on duty.
3 . Assisting officers in obituary to the family, department members and
general public.
4 . Representing the agency in funerals and memorial services, civic
and religious gathering and in other designated representations.
5 . As supporting presence in some emergency patrol shifts.
6 . Acting as liaison with faith based organisations to foster healthy
collaboration between police and community.
7 . Providing soft landing of spirituality in culture, both working
together and carefully balanced to effect coping mechanisms in a
fragile community.

4 . Correctional Centers
As of March 2025 there are 244 Correctional centers in Nigeria. According
to the Punch Newspaper of 6th March 2024, the House of Representatives
of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is seeking to decongest them. This is
because, according to Honourable Ogar, who moved the motion, over
70,000 inmates are housed across the nations. This has overstretched the
facilities and there is not enough care for them. Also many of them have
not been charged and legal representation for the inmates is a huge
problem because of cost. Some that are charged couldn't afford legal fees
while some could not pay the fines imposed on them by the courts. He
stated that cases linger for years and some cases have not once been
mentioned in the court.

With this scenario of horrendous vicious cycle, the inmates need clothing,
food, drugs, beddings, treatment, soaps, detergents and so on. The
government is overwhelmed and there are alleged cases of diversion of
goods by unscrupulous prison officials.

Some of the prison facilities also need urgent repairs because of

01
dilapidation to prevent incessant jail breaks.
Chaplaincy in the Correctional centers play a very outstanding role to
compliment government efforts and also perform critical services that bear
positively on the inmates. The structure of Prison Chaplaincy is similar to
that of the other paramilitary forces. It's been noticed over time that many
inmates came back from the centers to become more hardened than
changed. It is only God that can change and transform an entity he initially
created in his image.

The Chaplain represents God's love in practical terms at the Correctional

centers. The volunteer Chaplain is to work under the direct supervision of
the resident Chaplain and obey all prison regulations to the letter. The
center has a unique and sensitive administrative procedure because of the
peculiar nature of the inmates. No phone, camera or any recording device
is allowed into the center. Chaplains interested to work in the Correctional
centers must be:
1 . Qualified academically, ministerially and healthy.
2 . Be able to accommodate other officers of other faiths and work with
them without compromising his faith.
3 . Balance his services among different far right and far left distinct
beliefs including atheists.
4 . Be able to meet people's needs as a whole (holistically).
5 . Be able to have a good and sound relationship with God. Be filled
with and equipped by the Fruit of the Spirit. .

Roles of Correctional Chaplains

1 . Listening and caring
2 . Comfort passionately and encourages
3 . Accept people the way they are without directly changing them, but
allowing them to make their decisions.
4 . Confidential and trustworthy, to keep information and secrets.
5 . Emotionally stable. He should not be the one shedding tears or
betraying emotions during his service.
6 . Provide for the inmates physical needs for sustainability.
7 . Being able to speak about the positive effects of Faith to aid their
restoration and freedom.

01
5 . Institutions
Schools and institution Chaplains are skilled experts and professionals
that are trained to provide emotional, spiritual, stabilising and
interrelationship needs of school, staff and community needs. They bring
hope and confidence to students, support to academic and non academic
staff. There are variations in school chaplaincy depending on whether it be
set up by the school, church or voluntary organisations, but all have the
same basic tenets and rules of engagements. The model of each existing
school chaplaincy may be different in scope, methods or appraisals. It may
be a combination of various services or specific operations depending on
the workforce, training and personnels of the organisation.

The chaplains are there for the students, teachers, workers and the
community. School chaplains are expected to be equipped with
interpersonal and organisational skills to be effective in an academic
environment. Ability to listen, connect, flow, empathise and care is an
advantage. They are to minister to everyone regardless of Faith, gender,
age, status or sect. Their roles include:
1 . Caring for the needs of all, holistically, covering the Spiritual needs,
physical wellbeing, emotional stability, mental health and moral
soundness.
2 . Offering support in various aspects of life and campus challenges e.g.
cultism, drugs, peer pressure, bullying, racism and harassment.
3 . Counselling and encouragement over academic challenges.
4 . Conduct, lead and train in worship, religious services, instruments
and music.
5 . Offer prayers, healings and spiritual guidance and create
opportunities for growth in faith without infringing on the decisions
or subtle coercion of the students.
6 . Supporting the management of the school to produce a home
atmosphere of peace, care, unity and development.
7 . Be the link between the students, school, church and community,
religion of other faiths and government.
8 . Create an atmosphere where God is loved and appreciated, for all his
works.

01
9. Be ready to belong and understand their inclinations, style,
preferences and idiosyncrasies.
10 . Present the nation and the government in a good light and encourage
patriotism and brotherhood.
11 . Can produce links between students and principals, students and
university senate, and other relevant institutions as this case may be.
12 . Can assist in facilitating excursions, pilgrimage, visitation to
students' families, etc.
13 . Support in provision of meals, medicals, advocacy, sensitization on
trendy cautions and expectations.
School chaplaincy will surely assist in bringing stability, serenity and
orderliness into schools and prevent or control restiveness associated
with peer pressure or youthful exuberance.

6 . Rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation focuses on the total well being of the persons, therefore, the
Chaplain working here should be able to minister spiritually, mentally and
physically to them. Serving here requires sound spiritual status,
compassionate and selfless disposition. The infirms at these centers are
people with lost minds and dependent lives. They are either with mental
illnesses or suffering from drug and substance abuse. There are over
nineteen drug and mental rehabilitation centres registered officially in
Nigeria. Though there are physically disabled and as a result have lost the
normal functions of part of their body system. They need assistance to
perform basic functions. The Rehabilitation centres have stringent
administration that have highly trained personnel to run its affairs. They
have internal Chaplains that minister to their patients.

Any volunteer Chaplain from another organisation that wants to render

service in these centres may need to undergo internal training to fit into the
system. The needs of food, medicare, therapy, psychiatry, personal effects,
toiletries, mattresses among others are common in rehabilitation centres.
Professionals in therapy and psychiatry are added advantages.

Rehabilitation is aimed at making the patient become independent and

01
being able to perform normal life duties as much independently as
possible. The epic of it is when the patient is fully handed over to their
family as fully recovered. It also helps patients to improve skill after loss
of function, cognitive ability or physical completeness.

Physical rehabilitation consists of improving speech, skill/occupation and

physical restoration.

Social rehabilitation aims at helping the patient adjust to social life and
cope with interaction that brings inclusive daily transactions.

Mental rehabilitation helps the brain and the mind regain sanity and
alertness.

Moral and spiritual rehabilitation deals with recovery from perversion,

demonism and occultism.

Rehabilitation homes have helped a lot of people regain their life back and
fit back into the society that had rejected them. Many have picked up the
pieces of their life and become better and responsible family members,
citizens and ministers of God.

Rehabilitation centers are mostly run by the government because of the

huge financial responsibilities attached to it. This includes infrastructure,
payment of personnel, cost of drugs and medication, maintenance, salaries
and so much more. Many of the centers need volunteer workers to
compliment the few staff available for them. This is where chaplains are
much needed as support workers. They can as well conduct religious
services and counselling because the people there need continuous and
tireless monitoring till they are restored to a reliable self dependent life.
In some cases, there may be a need for referrals in which specific
professional, medical examination or treatment needs to be done.

Call to the Ministry of Chaplaincy.

Calling into ministry is a divine prerogative that comes only from God.

01
Being the owner of everything and the custodian of the human race, he
knows the ability, giftings, talents, and idiosyncrasies of everyone. He
knows who should be enlisted into the Ministry and the area they can serve
most. According to Ephesians 4:7-15 kjv “But unto every one of us is
given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he
saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave
gifts unto men.

(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the
lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended
up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave some,
apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors
and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry,
for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the
faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the
measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no
more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of
doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in
wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all
things, which is the head, even Christ:”

Furthermore, there are many other gifts operating in the life of men, all
given by the Holy Spirit to advance the betterment of humanity and God's
kingdom. 1 Corinthians 12:28-31 “And God hath set some in the church,
first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles,
then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? are all workers of
miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? Do all
interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you in a
more excellent way.”

So, it is the duty of any man to identify the area he is best attracted to, that
he functions easily in and covet earnestly the cultivation of such.

01
Identifying Call To Chaplaincy.
An individual can deduce that he is called to chaplaincy ministry if :
1 . You have natural empathy for suffering people.
2 . Helping people in distress comes naturally.
3 . When one is always moved with compassion
4 . When sharing whatever one has, even to a fault comes with
happiness and joy, even when the resources are not basically enough
for the owner.
5 . When there is passion for God.
6 . Willingness to work and share responsibilities (collaboration) is a
ready habit.
7 . Suffering and inconveniences is not a big deal.

Entering The Call.

1 . Deliberate on all insights and reflections that are pricking the heart to
use your gifts/talents/abilities.
2 . Pray for God's guidance and illumination for direction and strength.
Raw gifts, talents or abilities are not enough. Romans 9:16-17. “So then it
is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth
mercy. For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose
have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my
name might be declared throughout all the earth”.
3 . Let others notice your passion and hear their comments.
4 . Believe in God that you will succeed. (Faith) Receive Jesus as your
Lord and Saviour.
5 . Get the necessary training ( education, spiritual knowledge,
chaplaincy course).
6 . Look for opportunities to serve.
7 . Be acquainted with places of interest where you can optimally do the
service.
The aim is making a difference for Christ in a godless and merciless world
through empathy nurtured by grace.

As good as call to Chaplaincy ministry is, abiding in Christ is very

essential, because we draw grace from him for strength to do the work. We

01
should not forget that we are in Him so we should not allow the Chaplaincy
activities cut us off from prayers, reading the word of God and meditation,
and fellowship. We should ask him daily help so that we can live an
acceptable life before him and serve him more effectively. John 15:4-9.
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except
it abides in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the
same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man
abides not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men
gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in
me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be
done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so
shall ye be my disciples.

As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love”.
Whatever is to be done must be done through the love of Christ and to his
glory alone. By this the world will know that he lives in us and that he
sends us. Without speaking or stylishly forcing repentance and salvation
on the people, their heart will yearn for the Lord and they will request him
to come into their heart. Chaplaincy is a practical revelation of the love of
Christ to the lost and hurting world and a call to chaplaincy ministry is the
extension of the hand of Jesus Christ to the weak, sick, rejected, wounded
and the lost in the society.

THE DEMANDS OF THE CALL TO CHAPLAINCY.

The Call to chaplaincy is not a walk in the park. It is such that comes with
great responsibility and sacrifice. It is a selfless and sharing ministry. It is a
calling that indicates that whatever goods of life on has doesn't belong to
the owner alone but also to the needy and the vulnerable anywhere they
may be found. The motto of Chaplaincy is “ INTO EVERYWHERE, THE
WORLD IS OUR PARISH”.

The symbol of Chaplaincy in cases contains the Cross. This is not a

coincidence, it signifies the nature and purpose of the call and what it
stands for.

01
These demands include:
1 . Constant prayer life.
Call to chaplaincy ministry involves intentional prayer life. 1
Thessalonians 5:17-19. admonishes thus; “Pray without ceasing.
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus
concerning you.

Quench not the Spirit”. Ephesians 6:18. goes further to say, “Praying
always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching
thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”

Caregiving and charity is not enough but must be bathed in prayer of

intercession unto God for the sick and disadvantaged. Prayer will also take
care of any demonic connotations to their suffering. These are prayers
done in the secret targeted at liberation of those under the bondage of
sickness and pain. Prayer will also open doors for blessings that will make
the work easier. It will create an atmosphere of success upon the care and
services rendered. It will bring hope, satisfaction, joy and strength so that
the work will not be burdensome. Prayer will also send helpers and
financial supporters to the Chaplain himself. Prayer helps in ways one can
not fathom.
A Chaplain should cultivate a lifestyle of Prayer.

2 . Patience and Perseverance

Though the Chaplain must be born again and be filled with the Fruit of the
Holy Spirit, among this, patience and perseverance is very important. The
work needs these from the Chaplain because the results of the care takes
time to show. Sometimes, things may even go bad while services are going
on and money is being spent. 1 Peter 5:8-10 advises us to “Be sober, be
vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about,
seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing
that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the
world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory
by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect,
stablish, strengthen, settle you.

01
The patient, inmate, rehabilitated, drug addict, psychiatric patient may not
show signs of improvement or appreciation. With time, things will begin
to improve. We should not abandon the people but rather hope for God's
intervention.

Selflessness.
Only selfless and sacrificial attitudes can flame the Chaplaincy ministry. In
Matthew 20:25-28. it is written “But Jesus called them unto him, and said,
Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and
they that are great exercise authority upon them.
But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you,
let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him
be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto,
but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many”. Anyone that has not
made up his mind in that area cannot do it. It becomes harder in
Volunteering Chaplaincy where there is no financial payment but rather,
the Chaplain will have to spend whatever he himself has on the people he is
ministering to. In established organisations where Chaplains are
employed, the burdens of finance and supply of materials is on the
Organisation but as a volunteer Chaplain, more burdens are carried.

The peculiarities of the place of service also vary and the Chaplain may be
exposed to some risks like diseases, violence, emotional trauma, grief,
burnouts, irritations and more. In this regard the Chaplain is not expected
to betray emotions or complain.

3 . Unpredictable duty.
Sometimes a Chaplain may find himself in a task he is not prepared for.
Sudden cases like death of someone, hospitalisation of accident victims,
widows and orphans needs, unexpected financial needs by someone and
more. If the Chaplain is available and can do something, his ministry
requires that he step in or solicit on behalf of the helpless. Volunteer
Chaplains do face this kind of scenario.

4. Physical fitness.

01
The Chaplain must be physically and mentally sound. In fact, a sickly and
fragile person may not be able to work in hospital chaplaincy. Luke 2:40-
49 spoke about the daring fitness of Jesus Christ thus; “And the child grew,
and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was
upon him. Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the
passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem
after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they
returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his
mother knew not of it.

But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went on a day's
journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances.
And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem,
seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in
the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and
asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his
understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed:
and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us?
Behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must
be about my Father's house. A mentally unstable person can not be
entrusted with the care of anyone. He was so physically fit that at twelve
years old he could find his to anywhere and be entrusted with great task
A person still struggling with any kind of weaknesses or character defects
will need to get himself right and well if he has the call to Chaplaincy
ministry.

5 . Spiritually conformed.
The Chaplain must be born again. He must have the experience of genuine
salvation in Christ. He must have given his life to Jesus Christ as his Lord
and Saviour. Romans 12:1-3. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the
mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the

01
renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and
acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you,
not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think
soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith”.
He must love the word of God and meditate on it regularly. He must
believe the Bible as the Word of God. He must be of impeccable report, a
husband of one wife and the one with a stable family.
Chaplaincy is a Ministry and the Chaplain must meet the demands of the
Ministry.

6 . Ready to stake his life for others.

This is the hallmark of the demands of the Chaplaincy ministry. He may
need to face hard situations that may be risky. A Chaplain must not be
fearful, lazy, indulgent or pleasure seeker.
The way of the cross is rugged and he must fevas such, prepared for
anything and ready to die if need be. Luke 14:26-33 .“If any man come to
me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and
brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my
disciple.

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and
counteth the cost, whether he has sufficient to finish it?
Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all
that behold it begin to mock him, Saying, This man began to build, and was
not able to finish. Or what king, going to make war against another king,
sitteth not down first, and consulted whether he would be able with ten
thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and
desireth conditions of peace. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that
forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple”.
In all these, God is the source of our strength and will help us if we depend
on him.

01
7 . Build relationships.
A Chaplain must be able to build relationships and connect with people of
other Faiths, Beliefs, Culture, Race or Ministries. Jesus Christ was very
connected when he was physically on earth. His Disciples span across
different classes of people, from stark illiterates to Doctors and
government officers, from notable men to women of no repute, from secret
Disciples like Nichodemus, Joseph of Arimathea to the Alabaster woman.
From Matthew to Lazarus and his sisters, Martha and Mary. With these
array of different people and many others not recorded he had a fulfilled
ministry. The work of Chaplaincy is so broad, even whichever area one
chooses, that one will surely need the help of others to cover much.

Collaboration is necessary in Chaplaincy ministry especially with donors

of personal effects, food, medical and drugs, training and capacity
development, referrals in specialised cases, government agencies,
political stakeholders, religious heads, etc. This is mainly because
Chaplaincy is mostly the ministry taken to the world who do not and may
never come near the gate of the Sanctuary. Reaching them is better
enhanced when there are no stringent denominational or religious barriers
as in doctrines, creedal bottlenecks, prejudices or holier-than-thou
attitude. Matthew 10:16, 37-42 describe our necessity of working with
people no matter how dangerous they may be, “Behold, I send you forth as
sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and
harmless as doves.

He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he
that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that
taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake
shall find it. He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me
receiveth him that sent me. He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a
prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous
man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.
And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of
cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in

01
no wise lose his reward”. There is that assurance that some will receive us.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 “Two are better than one; because they have a good
reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but
woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him
up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be
warm alone?
And if one prevails against him, two shall withstand him and a threefold
cord is not quickly broken ”. Proverbs 27:17-18 further stated that “Iron
sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on
his master shall be honoured”. The Master in this context can be a
Supporter. Ability to collaborate widely will make the Chaplaincy
Ministry endearing and greatly successful.

When one builds healthy and Holy Ghost empowered relationships, limits
will be exceeded because robust synergy brings exponential results.
Building relationships is a win-win situation at the end of the day, God
takes the glory. Everyone will be happy, friendship would have been born,
families that never knew they could know each other become knit and it
expands as the relationship lasts.

8 . Broadminded
For the Ministry to be as fruitful as possible, the Chaplain must not be
narrow minded or poised stoic. Situation should be seen on a larger level
rather than through the narrow mirror of one's doctrinal belief of Faith.
God is interested in blessing all humanity while for the same reason of his
immeasurable kindness that Christ died for all. So, while they have not
received Christ, they should not be seen as almost already in Hell while
they are still alive. Matthew 5:44-48. states thus; “But I say unto you, Love
your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you,
and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye
may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his
sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on
the unjust.

01
For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the
publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more
than others? do not even the publicans so?

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect”.

Meaning that we should be like God who will give all sinners a chance to
repent, even if it means at the last breath of life. So, we should see hope as
against hopelessness and extend our services to all. What has limited some
ministry so far is due to narrow mindedness of the personalities involved
and judgment mentality whereas the later belong to God. One needs to
allow God to have his way while one's concern is only to show his love as
much as possible. This is not to say discernment should not produce
avoidance of appearances of evil, but that restraints should be exercised in
judging others and not falling into the “leaven of the Pharisees”. Matthew
16:6,12. “Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven
of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Then understood how he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but
of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees”; which is hypocrisy.
Some doctrines are extreme and thereby become exclusive of the love of
Christ but sect preservation which does not allow broad mindedness, but
selective favouritism.

REWARDS OF CHAPLAINCY MINISTRY.

Galatians 6:9. “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we
shall reap, if we faint not”. Chaplaincy is a Ministry of “doing good”. It is
a lifetime of service, care, tending, restoring, succouring, encouraging,
empathizing, supporting, defending, visiting, giving, sacrificing, relating
and much more as specific cases demand. It is a service without boundary
and resource consuming.

As big and challenging it is, the reward is enormous.

Matthew 19:27-29. “Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we
have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?
And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have

01
followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the
throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the
twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or
brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for
my name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting
life”. So God has not left us out of any promises but rather assured us that
the rewards are not only on earth but extends to eternity. Below are some of
the rewards of Chaplaincy:

1 . Victory.
God gives victory over greed, fear of insufficiency, evil imaginations and
defeat. If anyone is given to the cause that touches the kingdom positively
and consistently, he will defend that person to the last. Genesis 20:6-7, 14-
15 kjv. states “But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to
him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast
taken; for she is a man's wife. But Abimelech had not come near her: and he
said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?

Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is
my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I
done this? and God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst
this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning
against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. Now therefore
restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and
thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely
die, thou, and all that are thine. And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and
menservants, and women servants, and gave them unto Abraham, and
restored him Sarah his wife. And Abimelech said, "Behold, my land is
before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee”. Here because Abraham has
given himself totally to obey God, he was given victory even when he
didn't ask for it.

2 . Daily supply.
Proverbs 11:24-27 “There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there
is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.

01
The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered
also himself. He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but
blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.
He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh
mischief, it shall come unto him”.

Chaplaincy is a life of liberality, spiritually, financially and physically, so

God will give daily supply and nourish the Chaplain and his family.

3 . Divine health and strength.

Isaiah 40:27-31 “Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My
way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God?
Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the
LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary?
there is no searching for his understanding.
He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth
strength.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly
fall: they shall walk, and not faint”. No matter the stress, inconveniences,
danger or non appreciation from the service, the Lord is not unfaithful to
forget our labour of love in caring. He will give grace for more strength and
he will send healing and renew his servant. Chaplains are Priests to the
world and God will preserve them from the scourge of the world.

4 . Fulfilment and Joy.

God gives a sense of fulfillment in his service. He gives Satisfaction and
joy. This joy of the Lord is the strength for more performance. This sense
of fulfilment produces gallant Faith for more trust in God. Hebrews 11:17-
19. “By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had
received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: Accounting that
God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he
received him in a figure”. This is a complete sense of fulfilment in the
process of seeming loss of all. Glory to God.

01
While the Chaplain is in the service, there may be a presence of real danger
to his life and family, but the joy of the Lord will continue to spur him to go
forward, not disregarding the danger, but believing God for his presence.

5 . Heavenly revelations.
The more a Chaplain gives in to the work, the more of God's will that shall
be revealed unto him. In the course of service, he will be having access to
the plan and purposes of God towards the needy and how to fit in to bring
solutions to them. This is a great privilege of those who are sold out to God.
John 5:19-21 of Jesus Christ “Then answered Jesus and said unto them,
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what
he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the
Son likewise.
For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself
doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son
quickeneth whom he will”. This is another sign of God's presence in the
life of those who are found in the Ministry that touches the heart of God, to
wit, chaplaincy.

6 . Grace to enlist others.

Chaplaincy ministry enables the attraction of others into the Ministry to
the glory of God. When properly done it opens the eyes of willing helpers
to identify their ministry and key into it. God will surely give Grace to raise
future Chaplains with greater commitment and zeal thereby ensuring
continuity.
St Martins of Tours in modern day France is the originator of Chaplaincy
and his testimony is the source and attraction to Chaplaincy ministry
today. So whatsoever flavour added by the service of Chaplaincy today by
others will surely attract others into the fold.

7 . Eternal reward.
God promises Eternal reward in heaven to everyone that serves him
faithfully here on earth regardless of one's calling. The eternal reward is
not what anyone can understand fully here, it will blow our minds.

01
1 Corinthians 2:9. “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard,
neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath
prepared for them that love him”. That is the extent of the greatness and
vastness of eternal reward.

The Lord also promised that he will tell ministers or people that serve the
practical needs of the vulnerable, the rejected, the orphans, the widows and
the wounded and afflicted to enter into the joy of the Lord. What a day will
that be?. It shall be a glorious day of reward. Matthew 25:31-40. states it
clearly thus; “When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy
angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before
him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from
another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set
the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of
my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the
world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye
gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed
me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an
hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
Or when we saw thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you,
Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye
have done it unto me”. We shall be ushered into eternal life to enjoy what
the Lord had prepared for us.

Hallelujah.

Shalom.
