Tucked in ARAVALI HILLS, Udaipur was founded in 1559, by Maharana Udai Singh II. It is
thehistoric capital of the kingdom of Mewar in the former Rajputana Agency.Rana Udai Singh
builta six-kilometer-long city wall, with seven gates, namely Surajpole, Chandpole, Udiapole,
Hathipole, Ambapole, Brahmpole, Delhi Gate, and Kishanpole. The area within these walls
andgates is still known as the old city or the walled city.

CITY PALACEstanding on the east bank of Lake Pichola is a massive series of palaces built
atdifferent times from 1559. Its main entrance is through the triple-arched gate - the
Tripolia,built in 1725. This gate leads to a series of courtyards, overlapping partitions,
terraces,
corridors and gardens. The palace now houses a museum with many antique articles,
paintings,decorative furniture and utensils from the royal era
The JAGDISH TEMPLE is a large Hindu temple in the middle of Udaipur, built by
MaharanaJagat Singh I. A key tourist place in the city, this temple is an example of Māru-
Gurjaraarchitecture.

BAGORE-KI-HAVELIThe palace has over a hundred rooms, with displays of costumes andmodern
art. The glass and mirror in the interiors are Haveli work. It also preserves an example
ofMewarpaintingonthewallsoftheQueen'sChamber.Thetwopeacocksmadefromsmallpiecesofcolored
glasses are examples of glasswork.
LAKE PICHOLA, an artificial fresh water lake created in the year 1362 AD, is one of
severalcontiguous lakes in the city. The lake was built by Banjara, a gypsy "Banjara" tribesman
who
transported grain, during the reign of Maharana Lakha. Later, Maharana Udai Singh,
impressedby the charm of this lake with the backdrop of green hills, founded the city of
Udaipur on thebanks of the lake and also enlarged the Lake by constructing a stone masonry
dam in theBadipol region on the shore of the lake.

FATEH SAGARthe 2.5-kilometer-long lake was built in the late 17th century by Maharana
JaiSingh, and was later remodeled by Maharana Fateh Singh. It is a pear-shaped lake with its
tranquil waters and gorgeous views of the Aravalli Hills. BADI ka TALAB is another
artificialfreshwater lake built by Maharana Raj Singh to counter a devastating famine in the
village ofBadi back in the 17th century, enjoy the stone-laden walkway around this small lake
while
taking a break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

MONSOON PALACE, also known as Sajjan Garh Palace, was built as an astronomical center
tokeep track of the movement of monsoon clouds in the area and also served as the
summerresort of the Maharanas
SAHELLION KI BARIis a garden and tourist space in the northern part of the city. The
garden with its fountains and kiosks, a lotus pool and marble elephants, was laid for a group
offorty-eight young women attendants who accompanied a princess to Udaipur as part of
herdowry.

HATHIPOLE is a popular market for shopping of traditional handicraft items,


traditionalrajasthani clothing and shoes, and antique articles
The MOTI MAGRIor Pearl Hill, overlooking the Fatah Sagar Lake is the memorial of the Rajput
heroMaharana Pratapwith a bronze statue of the Maharana astride his favourite horse, "Chetak".
