In the shadow of Golgotha, as life ebbs from his tortured frame, we witness not the
diminishment of Christ's love but its magnificent expansion. Here, suspended between heaven
and earth, Jesus performs one of his final acts of earthly ministry—not a miracle of power, but a
miracle of compassion.
When Jesus was dying on the cross, something beautiful happened.
Looking down, Jesus saw his mother Mary standing nearby. He also saw his close friend John
(the "disciple whom he loved").
Even though Jesus was in terrible pain, he still thought about his mother's needs. Mary was
about to lose her son, and Jesus knew she would need someone to care for her after he was
gone.
So Jesus said to his mother, "Woman, here is your son," meaning that John would now take his
place as her son.
Then he said to John, "Here is your mother," asking John to treat Mary as if she were his own
mother.
From that day forward, John took Mary into his home and cared for her as his own mother.
This simple act shows us something amazing about Jesus - even in his worst moment of
suffering, he was thinking about others. He made sure his mother would be taken care of and
created a new family bond between two people he loved.
It teaches us that true love cares for others even when we're hurting ourselves.
Let us stand in awe of such love. Let us be transformed by it. And let us seek to embody it in our
own lives, caring for one another even when it costs us dearly.
