MODEL ANSWER KEY

A. Fill in the blanks:

1. The force exerted by a compressed spring is known as spring force.

2. The process of loosening and turning the soil is called tilling or ploughing.

3. The petroleum product used for surfacing roads is bitumen.

4. The unit of pressure is Pascal (Pa).

5. The microorganisms that help in fixing nitrogen are Rhizobium.

B. Answer the following in short:

1. Excess use of fertilizers makes the soil acidic and less fertile.

2. Threshing is the process of separating grains from the harvested crop.

3. Water conducts electricity and may cause electric shock.

4. Pressure is the force applied per unit area. SI unit is Pascal (Pa).

5. Exhaustible resources are limited and can be exhausted; inexhaustible resources are
unlimited and can't be exhausted.

C. Case Study:

a) The balloon burst because of high pressure applied over a small area.

b) Pressure is force acting per unit area. Formula: Pressure = Force / Area.

c) Petroleum is a dark, oily liquid found deep below the ground. Useful products: Petrol,
Diesel.

d) Pressure increases when the area of contact is reduced.


D. Application-based Questions:

1. Liquids exert pressure on the walls of a container: Example – When water is filled in a
bottle, it bulges slightly, showing pressure from the inside.

2. Agricultural practices: Preparation of soil, sowing, adding manure and fertilizers,


irrigation, weeding, harvesting, storage. (Explain one, e.g., irrigation is the supply of
water to crops at regular intervals.)

3. Refining of petroleum is carried out in a refinery. The process is called fractional


distillation where different components are separated based on their boiling points.

E. Answer the following questions in detail:

1. Pressure = Force / Area. When area is less, pressure is more. Example: Knives have
sharp edges to apply more pressure. A camel has wide feet to reduce pressure on sand.

2. Steps in crop production:


1. Preparation of Soil

3. Adding Manure and Fertilizers
4. Irrigation
5. Protection from Weeds
6. Harvesting
7. Storage

F. Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS):

1. The truck will exert more pressure because its weight (force) is more, even if the speed
is same.

2. Fossil fuels are formed from dead plants and animals buried over millions of years.
Hence, they are called fossil fuels.

3. If fossil fuels are exhausted, we will face shortage of fuel and energy crisis. It will
affect transportation, electricity, and many industries.
