VW MIB STD2 PQ unit
“component protection” patch installation manual
If you want to install MIB STD2 PQ unit in older car, you must keep in mind that all units are protected
with “component protection”. It allows to use unit in car where it was installed initially only. Unit is
assigned to the vehicle VIN number by the dealer and can't be installed in other car any more by the
end user.
Unit installed in different car can be locked by “component protection” in two ways:
1. If car equipped with older type dashboard (without “component protection”), or unit powered
outside the car, unit will work up to 8 hours and will lock itself. Timer is cumulative, if you will
disconnect power it will not reset. After unit is locked, it can't be unlocked without dealer
anymore. So when you buying used unit, you never now how much time left until it locks. So if
you bought unit, connect it for short test only and do not keep powered for longer time.
2. if car equipped dashboard with “component protection”, unit will lock in few seconds.
So, if you want to install unit in case which is described in 1 point, there is exist solution. You can
install small device which reads timer value and restores it each time when radio is restarted. If timer
value in unit is low and radio locks during driving, you can simply press and hold power button and
radio will restart.
In case described in point 2, additionally can filter should be installed at the unit connector.
If you bought already locked unit, to unlock it you must visit dealer, but keep in mind that unit can be
unlocked by dealer if it's not “blacklisted” in database. After it unlocked, install this patch to avoid
further locking.
Installation procedure:
1. disassemble unit and remove main board
2. on bottom side of PCB locate EEPROM and desolder it using hot air. (please note pin out)
3. read EEPROM contents and save a copy (just in case)
4. solder EEPROM to the “patch”PCB in U3 position. Small white dot marks pin1 position
5. Apply double side adhesive tape to the patch board and paste it to the main PCB
6. connect all 6 wires between patch PCB and original eeprom location.
7. apply some tape on top of PCB
8. assemble unit and turn on unit to check all functions works correctly.
Diagnostic procedure:
Patch board is equipped with diagnostic functions and indicates troubles
via LED diode. Possible LED signals:
1. Slow blinking (~1 sec on/off) – new, not learned device
2. Led Off – device learned (blinks only on eep access by radio unit)
3. Fast blinking (~0.1 sec on/off) – eeprom learning error
4. Constant On – eeprom restore error (for learned device)
Learning:
Patch board “learns” first soldered eeprom, when first time power applied to the PCB. Patch board
learning is done automatically when connected to the radio unit. Also its possible to do learning outside
radio, by soldering eeprom and applying power to the PCB. Pin4 – GND, Pin 8 – 3.3 V. When power
applied and eeprom soldered to the PCB, LED turns on for a 2.5 sec. and turns off, if successfully
learned.
Learning reset:
If device must be reused in other radio unit:
1. desolder eeprom from patch board
2. connect jumper wire on J1 points
3. connect power to PCB 4 – gnd, 8 - +3.3V
4. LED will turn on for ~2.5 sec. and will start slow blinking (1 sec
on/off)
5. remove jumper from J1
6. patch board ready for reuse
