Procrastination serves as major burdensome of many students in secondary schools because
they are fond of postponing what they are expected to do at right time, for instance many
students spend much time and lure themselves on social media instead of doing their
responsibilities in school, thus affecting their time and task management of the students.
Therefore, many students prefer to postpone the tasks and do pleasure things which they cannot
benefit from it. Awareness on this matter is
very important to this point, since almost of all the students become really prone to have such
habit. Students nowadays practice bad working ethics in dealing with their time and tasks in
school and others roles such as submitting reports and academic assignments. In this
consideration, the study focuses on the possible effects of procrastination on the academic
operations of the Grade 11 students of ACLC College of Iriga Inc. There were a total number of
60 respondents, 6 per section, that were surveyed. As a result, great percentage of the sample Page | 3
population agreed to laziness as the main reason why they procrastinate and a failing grade in
possible to be seen as an effect to their academic operations. Possible way to prevent or lessen
the habit of procrastination as suggested by the respondents was proper management of time for
tasks and other responsibilities.
Studies show that most students are academic procrastinators, they tend to wait for the last
moment before submitting or finishing their school related tasks. Analysts divided these
students into two groups, the positive procrastinators and the negative procrastinators.
Positive procrastinators are those students who wait for the last moment to submit a work
because they feel that the pressure of waiting for the last minute to do their work gives brings
them enjoyment and makes them more productive, while negative procrastinators wait for the
last minute because they are lazy or they lack the motivation.Contemporary analysts believe
that most students belong to the latter.
The position of modern day behavioral analysts is erroneous. Positive procrastination among
students is the norm not the exception. Contrary to the common notion that negative
procrastination is prevalent among the student population, the truth of the matter is that
students are more prone to positive procrastination. Procrastination among students is more
attributed to their belief that they perform better under pressure rather than their laziness or
lack of focus.
Academic procrastination is a prevalent phenomenon with a range of negative outcomes. Many
studies focused on causes and correlates of academic procrastination; however, the study of
interventions for academic procrastination is scarce. The present study is an initial effort to Page | 4
study the relationship between academic procrastination, online course participation, and
achievement, as a basis for developing an intervention for academic procrastination. Findings
indicated that studying procrastination was negatively associated with final exam grade as well
as with the three online course participation measures. Final exam grade was positively
associated with two of the online course participation measures, and they positively correlated
with each other. In addition, results indicated that studying procrastination, in combination
with online course participation measures, explained about 50% of variance in final exam’s
grade. Frequency of activities in course Web site had the strongest positive effect on final
exam’s grade. These findings strengthen the notion that studying procrastination is an
impediment to students’ academic performance and outcomes and clarifies the need to
develop and study academic interventions for academic procrastination as a means to decrease
its prevalence in academic settings.
