1) READING SECTION
Argentina won the NASA Aerospace Engineering World
Championship
Students from the Buenos Aires Technology Institute (ITBA) triumphed in the CanSat 2025
competition held in the United States.
Argentina was crowned champion of the NASA Aerospace Engineering World Championship
held in Virginia, United States. The team was made up of ten students from ITBA who had
been selected as finalists in the CanSat Competition, organized by the American
Astronautical Society.
The competition summons universities from all over the world to develop a small-scale
aerospace mission, replicating the design, assembly and launch of a satellite.
Half of the 40 teams that were selected as finalists were from the United States and the
ITBA student team was the only representative from Argentina. A team from Turkey got
second place, and the third place was for a team from Taiwan.
All the young people, who were selected for their academic background and experience in
previous initiatives, study careers such as mechanical, electronic, industrial, computer
engineering, and were divided into subgroups responsible for structures, hardware,
software and operations.
"The challenge consisted in developing a picosat that would meet the requirements of the
competition. Among the highlights was the development of an autogyro system for a
controlled descent, a telemetry system that would transmit data in real time, and a camera
that would record the entire journey from the air," explained Martínez, a Bioengineering
student, to newspaper Diario UNO.
During the competition, the team went through several stages: conceptual design,
prototype fabrication, integration, testing, flight, data analysis and presentation of results.
"For us, to be able to represent Argentina in a competition of such magnitude is an honor
and a giant pride. We want to show that Argentine and technological talent goes beyond,
that we can compete against other great powers such as China, the United States, Japan or
Germany and make a good performance."
The competition, promoted by the American Astronautical Society (AAS), is supported by
renowned institutions such as NASA, Lockheed Martin, Siemens and the U.S. Naval Research
Laboratory.
