REVIVAL OF

JAZZ AT THE
TAJ
A TRYST WITH TIME
From the all-black jazz bands of the 1930s to India's pivotal
"tryst with destiny" moment, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel has
borne witness to an array of significant historical events
RISE OF JAZZ
Jazz made its debut in Bombay in
November 1923 with the Jazz Band of S.
S. Mooltan, followed rapidly by the
Kentucky Five during the holiday season
and the American Jazz Band from the S.
S. Franconia in February 1924. Just as
string bands were fitting for the Taj, jazz
found its home at Greens, where it
quickly became a highlight of Saturday
night dances. A dance craze swept
through the city's elite, primarily
comprised of Europeans at that time. By
the next year, the dance floor at Greens
was so packed that The Times of India
remarked that they might need traffic
directors or even buffers for the jazz
enthusiasts. Without caution, Bombay
could soon evolve into a lively hub.
THE PIONEERS
The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, played a
pioneering role in introducing Jazz culture to
the city and was among the first venues
where the elite could enjoy their evenings.
Now, the iconic Ballroom will once again
host Jazz Suppers, heralding their return to
this historic venue.

At the concert "A Swinging Affair," the Thilo Wolf Jazz Quartett,
with its joy of playing and passion, met the singer Johanna Iser.
She was one of the most interesting singers of the young
generation in the German jazz scene. She impressively knew
how to form swinging uptempo numbers with scat singing and
highest virtuosity into small works of art, but also inspired the
audience with sensitive romantic ballads. Together with the
quartet’s rousing and at the same time soulful jazz, a musically
sparkling experience with goosebump moments was
guaranteed. A highlight for every jazz lover.
