Project objective:to investigate factor influencing rusting and

explore effective methods to prevent rusting.


Project description:
Problem identification: in the town of Messina many street
lights made of iron were breaking down due rain which
promoted rusting on the poles. Rust was weakening the
strength of the street lights poles, making it more prone to
cracking and braking.

Statement of interest: understanding the effects of rusting and


effects there are also crucial methods to prevent rusting.

Theme : maintenance & preservation

Stage 2 investigation of related ideas.


Coating method can provide a protective barrier against rusting
by preventing oxygen from reaching the metal surface.
You can coat using paints or galvanizing coatings.

Stage 3 Generation of ideas


Select street lights pole that are rust resistant such as wooden
poles.
Use poles that are coated with PVC to add more corrosion
resistance.
Inspect your poles regulary and maintain them if they are
rusted.

Stage 4 Development of ideas


Use of PVC coated material is the most crucial method because
a. PVC coating provides excellent protection against rusting.
b. They can withstand hash environmental condition.
c. Their maintenance is low

Evaluation
PVC coated poles are good on corrosion resistance and they are
suitable for street light poles but they can degrade over time.
Wooden pole can be durable and they do not rust, but they
need additional treatment to prevent rot and damage from
insects.

I recommend PVC coated material because it is more resistance


to corrosion than most of the meterials.
