Rhetorical Analysis on Deborah Tannen s Argument Culture
A Move towards Better Communication

Deborah Tannen graduated from The University of California, Berkely, M.A. in 1979 with her
PHD in Linguistics. She is a professor of linguistics at Georgetown University. Tannen has written
many books where she applies her theory of Linguistics to everyday situations. Some of her books
are: That s Not What I Meant!: How Conversational Style Makes or Breaks Relationship (1986),
Talking from 9 to 5: How Women s and Men s Conversational Styles Affect Who Gets Heard (1994),
The Argument Culture: Moving from Debate to Dialogue(1998), and I Only Say This Because I
Love You (2001). In an essay from the book, The Argument Culture: Moving from Debate to

Not to make them change, but to think about the way you handle a conflict. There is one point in
the essay that Tannen goes off in a different direction and loses your attention. She goes from
talking about high tech communication pulling us apart to road rage. She stated Road rage
shows how dangerous the argument culture and especially today s technologically enhanced
aggression can be. (406) I had a hard time seeing the relationship between the Road rage and
technology. Though road rage is definitely dangerous, I did not feel that this was relevant at this
point in the essay. Tannen s intended audience for this essay is the society as a whole; she is
addressing each and every one of us. At some time or another in our life we have come upon a
situation where we have to decide whether we fight for our own beliefs and opinions or if we let
someone else shape the way that we feel. Should we go to war with them?, no, but we should
stand up for what we believe in. In this essay this is what Tannen is attempting to get across though
she wants you to look at all sides of the problem and just not the main two. The wording of this
essay was easy to follow; she for the most part keeps on track with her thoughts. She transitions from
one example to another very well and breaks her different thoughts into separate parts. The sentences
are well written they were not long, but were long enough to get the point across. The
The Pros And Cons Of Sports Stadiums
Sports teams are a symbol of a cities pride. Take for example the Chicago Cubs. They create a
sense of loyalty toward that city. However, none of that would happen without a stadium. Stadiums
and teams can play a very important role in a cities economy, or they could also be irrelevant. To
decide whether or not they are useful or not you must first understand each side of the argument. So
first, let s examine the pros of having a stadiumwithin your city. Then, we will discuss the harms of
having one. And finally, decide which side is more beneficial for the economy.
Proponents of subsidizing sports stadiums is a great decision because the economic impact it will
have on the community is great for two main reasons. First, sports stadiums are massive
construction projects. In fact, one could compare them to a medieval cathedral in their attempts to
dominate a skyline and inspire pride in one s city And, just like these cathedrals, they are very
expensive, and massive building projects that would require many years of hard painstaking labor.
For example, the proposed stadium for the Los Angeles Rams in Inglewood, California, was
predicted to cost $3 billion and add 22,000 construction jobs to the economy of Los Angeles,
California. Although construction jobs do eventually disappear once a stadium is constructed once
the games begin, so does the massive consumer spending. For example, more than 3.5 million people
saw the St. Louis Cardinals play at Busch Stadium in 2015.

Hubble Movie Essay

had a flaw. The flaw was the telescope had a bad lens ad the astronauts, had to go into space to fix
in. they basically had to give it glasses so that the images that it was sending back to earth would
be clearer. What I learned from the movie was two things, one I don t think I could be an
astronaut, because their job seems to be very difficult. They have to fix big thing in such a little
cramped space, while they are floating around. The second thing that I learned was that I never
knew there was a telescope in space; I always thought that it was all done by satellites. [Link] stars

Essay about Neurobiological Perspectives on Autism
Neurobiological Perspectives on Autism

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped

patterns of behavior, along with severe impairments in reciprocal social interaction, verbal and non
verbal communication, and cognitive development (1,2,3). If the brain is responsible for behavior
then it should follow that disordered autistic behaviors should be explainable in terms of brain
abnormalities and disordered neurobiological processes. While findings are generally speculative and
the etiology of the disorder remains somewhat of an enigma, there is significant evidence that autism
is associated with neurobiological dysfunction.

Autistic individuals are often highly socially ... Show more content on [Link] ...
They can demonstrate apparent compulsive adherence to certain routines, and may become highly
distressed upon changes to such rituals. They may become preoccupied with unusual objects, and/or
very specific (and often bizarre) interests. In higher functioning individuals, such insistence on
sameness may be manifested as a narrow range of interests, whereas, in lower functioning
individuals, it may result in a preoccupation with, and attachment to, an unusual object or parts of
objects.

Individuals with autism generally demonstrate delayed or deviant verbal and non verbal
communication. In fact, poor communication skills are found in nearly all autistic children, and
some autistic individuals never acquire functional speech. Those who do acquire speech often have
pragmatic difficulties with the language, and are generally unable to use it in a socially
communicative fashion. They may display abnormalities in the volume, stress, rate, rhythm, and
intonation of their speech. Bizarre uses of language are also common. For example, ecolalia
(repeating heard words or phrases), and palelalia (repeating oneself), are often seen in autism. In
addition, disturbances in responses to sensory stimuli (particularly hypersensitive hearing or
hyperacusis) are also common in autism.

There is evidence that autism is associated with specific structural brain

8th Amendment Case Study
Issue Before the Court: Are the courts violating the 8th amendment by imposing mandatory life
imprisonment on juvenile offenders? Is this sentence initiating cruel and unusual punishment to
juveniles?

Rule of Law: On June 25, 2012, the United States Supreme Court, in Miller v. Alabama, ruled that
sentencing a juvenile to mandatory life imprisonment without possibility of parole is cruel and
unusual punishment and violates the Eighth Amendment. Sentences of life without parole are still
permissible in some states, but they can only be imposed after judicial review of the offender s
hallmark factors and the offender s maturity level must not be overlooked by the court. Application

Magnetic Resonance Imaging And The Health Field
Abstract Since the advent of magnetic resonance imaging applications in the health field forty years
ago the technology has become a staple in hospitals all around the world. Magnetic resonance
imaging commonly known to one of the safest forms of attaining pictures of the human anatomy.
Although magnetic resonance technology is popular amongst health care providers for decades,
until recently, scientists could not get the optimum image of some critical parts of the human
anatomy. The magnetic resonance technology was limited in its imaging of the heart, lungs and
skull. Early on the data the resonance provided could not be efficiently computed. To produce an
image took up to five hours in the beginning of magnetic resonance imaging. Now... Show more

He found that different kinds of animal tissue emit response signals that vary in length, and that
cancerous tissue emits response signals that last much longer than tissue with cancer. In 1972 he
filed his idea for using magnetic resonance imaging as a tool for medical diagnosis with the U.S.
Patent Office. A patent was granted in 1974, this was the world s first patent issued in the field of
magnetic resonance imaging. In 1977 the first MRI exam was performed on a human being. It

resonance imaging (MRI) exams help physicians diagnose a range of conditions by producing
images of internal organs and structures of the body. MRI is an imaging technique designed to
visualize internal structures of the body using magnetic and electromagnetic fields which induce
a resonance effect of hydrogen atoms. The electromagnetic emission created by these atoms is
registered and processed by a dedicated computer to produce the images of the body structures.

halo effect and recency effect Essay
As Director of Human Resources for People, people who need [Link], I have created the
following training proposal which will include common problems that occur when managers
complete performance reviews and suggestions for supervisors on how to eliminate or reduce these
problems.
The common problems I have identified when conducting my research for this training are as
follows:
Ø The halo effect which as the name implies causes supervisors to only see the angel in an employee
and blinds them by ignoring smaller problem areas that require growth and development. (San
Joaquin County Human Resources Division, 2002) ... Show more content on [Link] ...
(San Joaquin County Human Resources Division, 2002)
Ø The mirroring effect is when supervisors favor employees that remind them of themselves and
have difficulty assessing and valuing the differences others bring to the workplace. (San Joaquin
County Human Resources Division, 2002)
The following solutions are what I am proposing to eliminate or reduce these problems:
Ø On the halo effect, produce continuous documentation over the duration of the evaluation, which
will assist supervisors in writing the employee s evaluation.
Ø On comparing employees, write their evaluations at different times, which will give the supervisor
time to center on one employee at a time.
Ø For the central tendency effect, supervisors need to identify problem areas with identifiable
solutions and the leadership to resolve these problem areas. By providing information that is
constructive, the supervisor is helping the person become an improved person.
Ø On the pitchfork effect, supervisors need to remember that they are evaluating the employee for
the entire time frame indicated on the evaluation. Constant records of performance, helps the
supervisor stay away from focusing on a particular event.
Ø For the labeling effect, supervisors need to be aware of their insights and preconceived
Essay On African Slave Trade
The Age of Exploration was an era that impacted us globally and shaped our world into what it is
today. Resources such as spices, rum, guns and crops were used as a means to further develop a
nation and to gain power over other underdeveloped nations. However, the Atlantic Slave Trade was
used as the main resource to gain power in Europe.

Although the African Slave Trade was perhaps the most difficult thing a slave could go through,
importing slaves to Europe was a big benefit to Europe itself along with slave owners. During the
Middle Passage an average of about nearly 12.5 million enslaved Africans were transported from
Africa to the Americas between 1500 and 1866, and had to withstand conditions that could kill a
person instantly. This, however benefitted slave owners directly as the slaves who did manage to
make the trip in somewhat healthy conditions, were immediately sold and set to work at a plantation
and about An average of 80 percent of these enslaved Africans men, women, and children were
employed, mostly as field workers. Plantations ... Show more content on [Link] ...
In other words, the reason for the purpose of slavery is simply greed. English men saw a way to
profit their pockets without having to do any work themselves. The work that the slaves did was
tiring, and ultimately unfair. Slaves were expected to work at plantations and some were even
expected to do sewing. Fannie Moore held a candle for light so her mother could sew quilts at
night. Slave owners had to do little to no work to be able to allow their country to progress. They
dehumanized and mistreated human beings for their own benefit. Some slaves were even rented
out to other families so they could cook, clean and care for their children. A former slave in
Nashville said she was required to cook, chop in the fields, chop wood, bring water, wash, and iron.
She was six years old at the
