Spiral Welded Tubes

Strength by design
from Caparo Tubes

Caparo Tubes is part of Caparo Steel Products Ltd., one of the largest steel conversion businesses in the United Kingdom. Pioneers in the development and manufacture of welded cold formed steel tube and hollow sections in the UK, our business is renowned for the quality of our products and services. We specialise in the manufacture of Spiral Welded Tube and for decades have been the first choice for a wide clientele of distributors and consumers throughout the world.
The Caparo Spiral Welded Tube is used in many applications such as: piling, air ducts, culverts, general structural steel work, water, sewage and drainage systems in the construction industry; fenders and pontoons in marine engineering; wind turbines; various architectural applications; grass rollers in the agricultural sector; and others. With its distinctive advantages to longitudinal products, our Spiral Welded Tube is well known for its strength, cost effectiveness, wide size and availability parameters, precision of manufacture, uniformity and range of ancillary items. Manufactured to exact client requirements and in conformance with BS EN ISO 9001:2008, it can also be delivered to any site in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Caparo Spiral Welded Tube

Advantages
Caparo offers a huge range of made-toorder spiral welded tubes, which could also be supplied with a wide variety of ancillary items such as stiffening bands, collars, lifting lugs, etc. The main benefits of spiral welded tubes are: Strength. The Caparo Spiral Welded Tube is welded both internally and externally providing additional strength over tubes with a single weld. This prevents breakages and stretching, especially valuable in piling applications. Cost effectiveness. New light walled Spiral Welded Tube can often work out to be cheaper per unit metre than reusable tube. New production allows consumers the opportunity to specify the exact wall thickness, minimizing the mass per metre to that which is actually required. Flexibility. Spiral Welded Tube offers greater flexibility in terms of speed of availability and choice of diameters. Subject to strip stock any diameter of tube within the mills capability can be turned around in a matter of days. Precision. The continuous process of manufacturing Spiral Welded Tube allows the creation of almost any length without yield loss. This can be a significant advantage to the consumer providing the option of tailored lengths with resulting low quantities of waste. Delivered to site. Exact piece quantities can also be manufactured and delivered directly to a project site. Uniformity. Spiral Welded Tube is straighter and rounder than the tube produced from a longitudinal mill. In addition, spiral tube manufactured from strip will have a more uniform thickness than a tube from ring rolled plate.

End Uses and Applications

Spiral Welded Tubes have been traditionally used in pilling applications, however given the versatility of the product and the flexibility of the manufacturing process at Caparo Tubes Tredegar other product applications have been developed. These include: Culverts Wind turbines Floating pontoons Architectural applications Chimney stacks and air ducts Grass rollers and other agricultural applications Water, sewerage and drainage systems Road and motorway sign supports General construction applications Pilling and foundations

The Manufacturing Process

Wide steel coils are slit to appropriate widths and fed into forming rolls or a forming shoe at a pre-determined angle to achieve the required tube diameter. The strip edges are formed into a cylindrical shape with edges closely aligned. The welded joint is made by the continuous submerged arc process, employing two welding heads, one inside and one on the outside. A full penetration buttweld, made under optimum workshop welding conditions, ensures that a high quality product is consistently achieved. Caparo Tubes was one of the first tube makers to be accredited with BS 5750: Part 2 (ISO 9002), which was awarded to the mills in 1987, and the first UK tube mill to attain CE marking.

Product Specification and Approvals

Caparo Tubes hold the following industry recognised approvals: BS EN ISO 9001: 2008 (Certificate number FM 649) CE Marking LRQA (Certificate number 0038/CPD/20060018/A)

No order is too small or too bespoke and the team at Tredegar are open to discuss any ideas you may have for alternative uses for Spiral Welded Tube.

Services and Secondary Processing

The Caparo Tube mill is set up to offer a high degree of flexibility and service, which includes a comprehensive range of complementary processing to meet customers individual requirements, such as: Cutting to close end tolerances Supplying exact quantities Welding for end plates Welding for shoes Welding for joining collars JIT delivery scheduling including direct delivery to site

Spiral Welded Tube EN10219
As well as the standard sizes available in the table below the flexibility of our process means that any bespoke diameters between 400mm and 2500mm diameter tubes can be manufactured to increments of 1mm. Due to the flexibility with our raw material suppliers any thickness of tube from 2.5mm up to 15mm wall thickness can be manufactured (within the limits of the thickness to diameter ratio). No order is too small and we can supply single tubes to bespoke lengths at very short lead times. The length of the tube is only limited by the restrictions of road transport. The tube is offered in mild steel and high strength steel grades that are commonly used in the international market place. Standard steel grades include S235, S275 and S355, however alternative grades and qualities of steel are available on request.
