Calorimetry KARAN

The document covers fundamental concepts in calorimetry, including specific heat capacity, molar heat capacity, heat capacity, and latent heat. It also presents formulas for calculating heat transfer during temperature and phase changes, along with example problems to apply these concepts. Key points about energy changes during phase transitions and specific heat variations for different substances are highlighted.

3. Questions
S P E C IFIC HEAT CAPACITY
❑ The specific heat capacity is defined as the quantity of heat (J)
absorbed per unit mass (kg) of the material when its temperature
increases 1K (or 1 °C), and its units are J/(kg K) or J/(kg °C).
MOLAR HEAT CAPACITY
❑ The molar heat capacity is the amount of energy required to raise the
temperature of one mole of a substance by one degree.
HEAT CAPACITY
❑ Heat capacity or thermal capacity is a physical property of matter,
defined as the amount of heat to be supplied to an object to produce
a unit change in its temperature.
LATENT HEAT
❑ Latent heat is defined as the heat or energy that is absorbed
or released during a phase change of a substance.

FOR TEMPERATURE CHANGE

S O M E IMPORTANT POINT
▪ 1 calorie = energy to raise temperature of water from 14.5 to 15.5
▪ In gas specific heat is max for hydrogen
▪ During phase change, specific heat is infinite
▪ During melting energy is used to increase kinetic and potential
▪ During vaporization more energy is required (W =‫) 𝑣∆𝑃 ׬‬
WATER EQUIVALENT
❑ The amount of water that is required so that same quantity of
heat produce same rise in temperature in water and body.
CALORIM ETRY
Very easy question where we need to find heat supplied to the
system

ΔQ = msΔT when temperature change

ΔQ = mL when phase change

Find relation if final temperature is known

Heat gain = Heat loss

Find final temperature and phase can not change

Net heat change = 0

Find final temperature when phase can change

final temperature.
8 gram of water at 20℃ is mixed with x gram of water at 40⁰C and
final temperature is 32℃ find value of x.
