Question- what is your action?
Answer-
 Take a series of compass bearings.
 A certain risk of collision exists.
 Reduce speed.
[ as per rule 15, in a crossing situation avoid crossing ahead of other vessel hence cannot alter course to port and as
per rule “10.b.i” cannot go in the opposite direction of general direction of traffic flow. It is a cardinal sin to do so
hence cannot alter course to STBD as well, hence reducing speed would be the best action in this situation to avoid
collision]

Answer-
 Take a series of compass bearings.
 A certain risk of collision exists. (range decreasing/ steady bearing)
 Two short blast A/C to Port.
[ as the shape shown is of RAM which engaged in towing and Diamond shape indicate the length of tow is more than
200 m. (rule 24.a.v.) hence going to stbd or slowing down is not a good action.]

traffic flow in TTS and as per rule 10.b.i this is not allowed and is a cardinal sin, however as per rule 18.d.i you need
to keep clear of CBD, hence slowing down is the best action for the above situation.]

[ as per rule 3, the definition of CBD states that CBD vessel is severely restricted in her ability to deviate from her
course due to her draught in relation to the available depth and width of water, hence cannot manoeuvre as
required by this rule.]

Question- what is your action?
Answer-
 Take a series of compass bearings.
 A certain risk of collision exists. ( steady bearing/ range decreasing)
 Ask the vessel forward for permission to overtake.
 Two prolonged blasts and two short blasts (I intend to overtake you
from your port side.) (morse code Z)
 Two prolonged blasts and one short blast (I intend to overtake you
from your STBD side) (morse code G)
 Vessel forward will sound one prolonged- one short- one prolonged-
one short blast if she agrees and moves aside and gives us safe
passage to overtake.
Question- what signals does the vessel forward make if she disagrees with the
overtake?
Answer- she will not make any signal.

Question- What action will you take if she disagrees with you?
Answer- Reduce the speed.
Question- You slowed down as she disagreed, and now this is the situation,
when you have enough sea room to alter course, what action will you take?
Answer-
 As we have enough sea room to alter the course, we are not
required to ask permission and we can just over take by sounding
one short blast for stbd and two for port and overtake her.
 However we have a historical path with this vessel and we don’t
know for what reason she disagreed earlier. (maybe she is about to
turn for any reason or any other reason behind it)
 As a good seaman practice we will again ask for permission to
overtake.
Question- which vessel is responsible for keeping another clear?
Answer- Vessel B,
[ as per rule 12.a.i. when two sailing vessels are involved in ROC and both have the wind on their different side, the
one that has the wind on the port side is responsible for keeping clear of the way of the other.]

Question- Which vessel is responsible for keeping another clear?

Answer- Vessel B,
[ as per rule 12.a.ii. when two sailing vessels are involved in ROC and both have the wind on their same side, the
windward one is responsible for keeping clear of the way of the other.]
Question- Which vessel is responsible for keeping another clear?
Answer- Vessel A,
[ As per rule 12.a.iii. the vessel with the wind on her port side sees the vessel on
the windward side and is unable to determine if another vessel is having the
wind on her port or stbd side, in such case she should keep clear of another
vessel.

Practice

Question- kindly explain the relation between these sailing vessels, who is
responsible for whom under which rule? And final action as you are PDV.
Answer.
 Vessel C is responsible to keep well clear of Vessel B. [as per rule
12.a.ii as she is the windward vessel]
 Vessel A is responsible to keep well clear of Vessel C and B [as per
rule 13, overtaking vessel shall keep clear of overtaken vessel.]
 Vessel B is stand on vessel and she has to maintain her course and
speed.
 As a PDV you are responsible to keep clear of sailing vessels [ as per
rule 18 responsibilities between vessel]
 Action- one short blast and bold alteration to star board and pass
well clear of them.
Question- Who keeps clear?
Answer- Fishing vessel. [as per rule 18.d]

Question- identify vessel ahead.

Answer- vessel engaged in trawling, underway and making way.
Question- Who keeps clear?
Answer- CBD. [as per rule 13]
Question- Who keeps clear?
Answer- Sailing vessel. [as per rule 18.b]

Question- Who keeps clear?

Answer- PDV.
[ however as per rule 13 any overtaking vessel is required to keep clear of overtaken vessel but rule 2.b. states while
construing and complying think about the limitation of the vessel involved. Hence don’t wait for NUC to take action,
you take action immediately.]

Action- alter course to port or starboard depending upon NUC approach angle.
Question- what is your action?
Answer-
 Take a series of compass bearing.
 A certain risk of collision exists. (steady bearing/ range decreasing)
 Assume this a crossing situation.
 Two short blast and alter course to Port.
[note- you cannot alter course to stbd here as rule 15 says avoid crossing ahead
of the vessel]
Question- what is your action?
Answer-
 Take a series of compass bearing.
 A certain risk of collision exists. (steady bearing/ range decreasing)
 As it is difficult to find if you on exact bearing of 112.5 assume it is a
overtaking vessel. (as per rule 13.c)
 One short blast and alter course to STBD.
Can you alter course to Port?

No, because if another vessel assume this is an crossing situation and alter course to stbd then situation is going to
be risky and not never alter course to port when vessel on your port side. Altering course to STBD is the safest option
here.
Question- what is your action?
Answer-
 Take a series of compass bearing.
 A certain risk of collision exists. (steady bearing/ range decreasing)
 Bearing is irrelevant weather it is crossing situation or overtaking
situation. Vessel B is responsible.
 Stand on with caution.
 If she does not take any action, 5 short and rapid blast.
 Call the master.
 One short blast and alter course to STBD.

Can you alter course to Port?

No, it is still a PDV on your port side.
Question- what is your action?
 Take a series of compass bearings.
 A certain risk of collision exists. (steady bearing/ range decreasing)
 One short blast and overtake from her STBD side.

Question- The ferry which was behind, now came here in this situation. What
action you will take?
 Take a series of compass bearings.
 A certain risk of collision exists. (steady bearing/ range decreasing)
 Stand on with caution. (as she was overtaking vessel to us and subsequent
change of bearing does not make it crossing situation and it is still her
responsibility to keep well clear of us)
 If she does not take any action. 5 short and rapid blasts.
 Call the master.
 One short blast and alter course to STBD.
Question- what is your action?
Answer-
 Take a series of compass bearing.
 A certain risk of collision exists. (steady bearing/ range decreasing)
 One short blast and alter course to STBD.
 Both vessel shall take action and each shall alter course to stbd. [As
per rule 14]
Question- you sure it is not a crossing situation?
Answer- rule 14.c stated if you are in doubt if such situation exists or not, then
assume it does exist and act accordingly,
While assuming it is a crossing situation vessel ‘A’ becomes a stand on vessel
and that could make the situation worse.
Question- what is your action?
Answer-
 Take a series of compass bearing.
 A certain risk of collision exists. (steady bearing/ range decreasing)
 One short blast and alter course to STBD.
