CLASS XI - ENGLISH

REPORT WRITING
A report is a description of an event or an investigation of an issue or a
problem. It may also be an objective analysis or evaluation of something.
It is a vivid expression of a person’s experience. It is a commentary on
incidents seen by the reporter.
There are two types of reports:
 Newspaper reports involving accidents
 Reports on events/functions related to schools
Purpose of writing a report
The purpose of a report is to highlight an incident, event or experience of
general nature. Reports create awareness among readers and give voice
to many social problems and help solving them through the concerned
authorities.
Keep in Mind:
An individual should keep the following points in his/her mind while
writing a report:
 Write in a practical and businesslike manner presenting the necessary
information as clearly as possible
 Write in direct speech and preferably in passive voice
 Write in third person form and avoid pronouns like I, me and you
 Avoid ornamental language. The content should include details lie what,
how, when, where, who, eyewitness account/action mishap, etc.
 Present all the necessary information as clearly as possible
 Mention the aim of the report and the source where it was obtained in
the beginning itself
 Give a proper heading and use easy and simple to grasp language
 Adhere to the word limit of 120-150 words
Format of a Report
Heading: Catchy and brief
Byline: by staff reporter, name of newspaper/ name of person writing
the report
Opening lines: mention of what, when, where, how, etc.
Details: details of the incident being reported
Conclusion: writer’s/reporter’s remarks

people suffered a great loss of life and property in a massive fire. The
students of your school rendered their services and material help to the
victims. Write a report in 100-125 words for your school magazine. (Delhi

Fire Devastates A Slum Cluster


14th February, 2022 Sarita Kumar,
Secretary, Agrani Club
A major slum area in Vilas Nagar, New Delhi was gutted by a massive fire
on 10th February, 2022. The fire whose exact cause is still not very clear
caused extensive damage to life and property. Ten persons lost their
lives, many were injured and about two hundred people were rendered
homeless. L.M. Jain School joined hands to provide aid and relief to the
victims. On 12 February the students of the school collected food
packets, old clothes, medicines, utensils, etc. to be distributed to these
homeless and helpless people. Ten students and three teachers
personally visited this slum area to ensure proper and fair distribution of
the items that had been collected. Kavita Jain, an accompanying teacher
said, ‘The Agrani Club is always ready to join hands for the community
and society at large. We live to serve.’ Once more, the Agrani Club
provided some relief to these unfortunate people in their time of crisis
and misery.

NEWSPAPER REPORTS

8. The Sarvodaya Vidyalaya’s Silver-Jubilee celebration has just concluded.
Write a brief report to be published in your school magazine.
9. Despite studying many books in science, our students lack a scientific
temperament. A seminar was organized in your school to instill scientific

ASSEMBLY REPORTS
11. Your mathematics teacher has been honoured by the Lions’ Club for
being nominated for the “Best Teacher Award”. A report has to be read

RECENT BOARD QUESTIONS


1. You are a press reporter. Recently the railways cancelled a few trains
due to floods. Passengers were stranded at the New Delhi Railway
station. Write a report in about (150-200) words, highlighting the
problems faced by the passengers by using the following inputs.

a number of inter house competitions highlighting the need for ecological
balance for man’s happiness. As the secretary of the “Nature Club” of

to the Car Accident in which a truck driver had hit a vehicle into a group
